Jeannie Tatis
has been named Director of Security at the Richline Group.  Jeannie comes from Ross Stores Loss Prevention Department and, prior to Ross Stores, was the Director of Asset Protection for Saks Fifth Avenue, and also worked for Computer Science Corporation as a Business Analyst-Fraud Waste and Abuse.  Jeannie earned her BA from Marist College and she is certified in Wicklander-Zuwlaski Investigating and Interrogation Techniques, the John Reid Investigation Technique and Lexis-Nexis.  Congratulations, Jeannie!

If any member of your Board of Directors was using the popular Director's Desk web-based application, they could have been spied on according to a news report from Reuters.  The hackers who compromised systems belonging to the NASDAQ stockmarket last year were able to install monitoring software that allowed them to spy on the doings of corporate directors of publically held companies.  (Source (Source

The gang problem in the United States is growing and there are an estimated 1.4 million members in some 33,000 gangs, the federal government said Friday.  Gangs are collaborating with transnational drug trafficking organizations to make more money and are expanding the range of their illicit activities, engaging in mortgage fraud and counterfeiting as well as trafficking in guns and drugs, according to the national gang threat assessment for 2011.  Gang membership "continues to flourish" and gang leaders are striking new alliances with other criminal organizations for profit, FBI agent Jayne Challman.  White-collar crime is an increasing focus for gangs.  A member of the East Coast Crips in Los Angeles co-owned a clothing store, using it to sell counterfeit goods and traffic in drugs. Each year, Major League Baseball officials participate in the seizure of 600,000 pieces of counterfeit goods, which heats up during postseason games and this year MLB's Properties licensing group accompanied by undercover officers seized 1,100 counterfeit items from vendors in one night during the World Series in St. Louis.  In 1992, the MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA and the Collegiate Licensing Co. formed the Coalition to Advance the Protection of Sports logos (CAPS) alliance to aggressively enforce trademark laws. The MLB says it seized more than 6 million non-licensed products in the past decade as part of 5,000 raids or other enforcement actions.  Since 1993, more than 10.1 million pieces of counterfeit goods have been seized through CAPS' efforts for all of the leagues, with a value of more than $369 million.   My message to the counterfeiters is, 'Watch out, we are on to you,'" said Ethan Orlinsky, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Major League Baseball Properties.  (Source

Wal-Mart won't be beat and ups the ante this holiday by saying shoppers who buy something at a Wal-Mart store between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25, but then find the identical product elsewhere for less, can get a gift card in the amount of the difference, excluding some items such as groceries.  To qualify, shoppers need to bring in the original Wal-Mart receipt and the local competitor's print ad. Gift cards will not be given out after Dec. 25.  (Source Associated Press)

eBay Supports Drug Related Investigation Leads to 10 Year Jail Sentence

eBay Global Asset Protection investigators support an investigation leading to conviction and 10-year sentence for drug dealing activity. The suspect was identified as purchasing products to include amplifiers via the eBay marketplace sites and using them to conceal and subsequently ship drugs through the post services to an unsuspecting woman he met on an internet dating site. eBay investigators provided analytical research on transactions as well as testifying in the criminal proceedings. The 23-year-old suspect was charged with using a dating website to prey on a woman and then exploiting them by arranging for parcels containing cocaine to be sent. The parcel was intercepted by airport customs officers and found to contain almost one kilogram of cocaine worth about £50,000 ($90K USD), but if diluted it had a potential street value of £340,000 (approx. $600K).

Even China has ORC and they could get a life sentence Where a group of six suspects from Vietnam faces pending charges after authorities caught them with a pile of namebrand clothes valued at 250,000 yuan ($39,000), the fifth organized theft gang comprising foreigners caught in Shanghai since 2007.  Police caught five of the suspects near a Zara store who lead them to the remaining suspect at a hotel room where six suitcases containing some 600 pieces of clothing from Zara were discovered.  Two of the men from the group frequented the store and, as such, caught the attention of plain-clothes police officers on patrol at Times Square. The officers later found that they received clothes from two other women inside the store, who passed the merchandise to another man at the front of the store through a special bag that passed security without triggering an alarm.  They later confessed to hitting 10 Zara stores over the last 5 days.  The Vietnamese suspects are the latest foreigners that police have found shoplifting in the city; another 21 foreigners have been caught for the same crime over the past four years.  Chinese and foreign individuals found guilty of stealing properties valued at more than 100,000 yuan ($15,000) risk more than 10 years in jail, or even a life sentence.  (Source

The most prevailing comment made by corporate America when they come to market looking for a new senior Loss Prevention executive is bring me someone who has a total business acumen and understands the entire business.  Take note to this common theme as it sends a very clear message that you've got to be a retail executive first that happens to be a subject matter expert in Loss Prevention.  And as we continue to evolve technologically the demands are greater that you understand the financial, merchandising, supply chain, and operations side of the business and know how to integrate the various shrinkage reduction components within all of them.  Being able to communicate all of that is a series of meetings is truly the key and then being able to do it day in and day out is the objective.

Hearing it everyday
