Collaboration among leading retailers will be the name of the game this week when two of RILA's loss prevention committees convene in Minneapolis. On Wednesday, RILA's Asset Protection Leaders Council (chaired by Mike Lamb, VP of Asset Protection at The Home Depot and vice-chaired by Monica Mullins, VP of Loss Prevention & Safety at Walmart), product manufacturers and renowned academic researchers will meet at Best Buy to kick-off the APLC's much anticipated process driven shrink initiative. Included in the day's events will be a store walk at Best Buy highlighting their 360 degree approach to loss prevention, a presentation by Target that focuses on the role of upstream partnerships and operational excellence in driving down shrink, and a presentation by Dr. Mark Barratt of Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business who will challenge the current views on shrinkage and the approach that most companies adopt when trying to control Inventory Record Inaccuracy. Then, on Thursday, RILA members will head down the road to Target's Investigations Center for RILA's Crimes Against Business Committee meeting. Retailers slated to give presentations include CVS, Lowes, Publix, Target, The Home Depot and Walmart and attendees will hear from a Florida statewide prosecutor who used the RICO statute in a novel way to successfully prosecute a large ORC case. These meetings are great examples of how the retail industry can come together to exchange ideas to achieve common business objectives!

Sending and delivering the LP message in stores and at the corporate office is probably one of the most critical things one can do everyday. How you communicate and how you deliver your message will determine how they respond and react. If you expect to improve performance and influence change in the stores, then you've got to communicate in their words and their terms. Each company has a message, a mission, and core values and your message should fit all of them and be an extension of them and not an addition to them. This breeds integration and results in inclusion – all of which are important elements of a successful executive.

Good Luck
Gus Downing
