Protecting Consumer Location Privacy The U.S. federal government could do more to protect consumers' privacy in dealing with mobile device location data, the Government Accountability Office says in a new report. The mobile industry associations and privacy advocacy groups have proposed voluntary practices to protect consumers' privacy while making use of customers' personal information in these location services. But mobile companies examined by GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, have been inconsistent in implementing these practices. "In particular," the GAO says, "the lack of clear disclosures to consumers about how their location data are used and shared means that consumers lack adequate information to provide informed consent about the use of these data. Consumers are therefore unable to adequately judge whether the companies with which their data are shared are putting their privacy at risk." The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy called for the report. (Source govinfosecurity.com)

Cinemark theater - negligent in failing to provide adequate security the night of the shooting in Denver? Two families of two of the 12 killed in the Aurora theater shooting have filed suit against Cinemark claiming the theater was negligent in failing to provide adequate security the night of the shooting. The suits mimic the two other suits filed against Cinemark. According to the complaints, the theater did not hire security guards for the midnight showing. Additional security personnel were typically employed by the theater only on Friday and Saturday nights. The lawsuits also allege that failure by employees to monitor the surrounding parking lots and a lack of security features on emergency exit doors enabled the deadly attack. (Source denverpost.com)

Wal-Mart to pay for heart and spine surgery for U.S. employees Starting in January, workers and dependents enrolled in Wal-Mart's medical plans will receive free consultations and care for certain heart and spinal procedures along with travel, lodging and food for the patient and a caregiver. Wal-Mart's announcement marks the first time that a retailer has offered a national program for coverage of heart, spine and transplant surgery, though some other companies already offer similar programs on a smaller scale. Talk about caring. (Source reuters.com)

Wal-Mart expects $9B in global e-commerce sales next year Wal-Mart, No. 4 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, in the past has not released online sales forecasts. In comparison, Amazon.com Inc., No. 1 in the Top 500, had $48.08 billion in sales in 2011. That's one reason they kicked out Amazon's e-reader and the fact that some are predicting Amazon may overtake Wal-Mart one day not too far off. Where do all these online dollars come from? The brick & mortar's bottom line. Comparable store sales growth will continue to be a struggle in the on-grocery world. And now Wal-Mart is testing same day delivery just like Amazon. Wow what a battle to watch! (Source internetretailer.com)

Future cyber attacks could rival 9-11 and cripple the U.S., warns Secretary of Defense Panetta The U.S. is facing a dramatically increasing threat from cyber attacks and a future attack on the country's critical infrastructure could have an effect similar to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks of 2001, the U.S. Secretary of Defense said Thursday evening. "Ultimately, no one has a greater interest in cyber security than the business that depend on a safe, secure, and resilient global digital infrastructure," he said. "To defend those networks more effectively, we must share information between the government and private sector." (Source csoonline.com)

New security threat at work: Bring-your-own-network With the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend, corporate security is being further complicated by another emerging trend: bring your own network (BYON). BYON is a by-product of increasingly common technology that allows users to create their own mobile networks, usually through mobile wireless hotspots. Security professionals say BYON requires a new approach to security because some internal networks may now be as insecure as consumer devices. (Source csoonline.com)

Major identity theft ring busted in Spokane, Wash., after buying hundreds of thousands of dollars in goods with fraudulent credit cards Police arrested one suspect and expect there's a number of other individuals involved. Investigators said the theft ring racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen credit. The U.S. Postal Inspector, U.S. Secret Service, Social Security Administration, Spokane County Investigative Task Force and Spokane Police were all part of the raid. Detectives say they've recovered thousands of dollars worth of stolen material. Deputies say there are over 300 victims, from all over the country, and many are active-duty military. LAPD Deploys On-the-Fly Axis IP Video Surveillance Solution for Enhanced Situational Awareness as NASA Shuttle makes Final Landing

HDTV-quality pan/tilt/zoom cameras to be deployed using "leap-frog" strategy and will transmit video via temporary wireless mesh network along Mission 26 route

CHELMSFORD, Mass. – October 11, 2012 – After logging nearly 123 million miles in flight, the space shuttle Endeavour will travel its final 12 miles on the ground through the streets of Los Angeles where it will dock one last time at the California Science Center (CSC). During this historic and unprecedented transport of the space shuttle, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) will rely on Axis Communications IP video surveillance cameras transmitting over a unique wireless mesh network to safeguard the downtown route and protect NASA’s national treasure with enhanced, HDTV-quality situational awareness.

On Friday, Oct. 12, Endeavour will embark on the "Mission 26: The Big Endeavour" road-trip to retirement, which is a two-day, 2 mph journey from Los Angeles International Airport across the 405 Freeway and through the streets of L.A. to arrive at the CSC on Saturday, Oct. 13, where it will be on display starting Oct. 30.

During the journey, residents are encouraged to watch Endeavour’s final trip from private lawns, inside businesses and along side-streets, as well as attend special viewing celebrations throughout the city, including at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. PT, and then later that day near the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza shopping mall around 2 p.m. PT.

The primary challenge in securing an event of this magnitude is that many of the security needs from a technology perspective are mobile and temporary. To cover the expansive 12-mile route in a cost-effective way, the LAPD will construct a wireless mesh network on the fly and deploy HDTV-quality pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) Axis IP surveillance cameras using a “leap-frog” approach: As the shuttle passes beyond the first camera’s field of view, it will be uninstalled and then reinstalled at the front of the surveillance network to continue the chain.

See demo video of Axis’ HDTV PTZ in action.

"Crowd and traffic control around major events bring about unique challenges, especially when it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event like this," said Michael Downing, deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department and commanding officer of LAPD's Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau. "Relying on Axis’ surveillance technology as we’ve done for many of the city’s biggest events removes typical IT and surveillance obstacles often present with critical yet impromptu security applications. With these worries eliminated, we can focus on our job: making sure the spectators remain safe with minimal disruption to the city and shuttle."

The LAPD will monitor Endeavour’s journey, the crowds and general activity using 720p HDTV quality AXIS P5534-E PTZ Dome Network Cameras and 1080p HDTV quality AXIS Q6035-E PTZ Dome Network Cameras. These IP cameras are easy to install with outdoor-ready housings and configure seamlessly with the LAPD’s wireless mesh network powered by Cobham technology. Additionally, the automatic day/night functionality of the AXIS P55 and AXIS Q60 Series cameras will enable the LAPD to monitor the 48-hour journey in crisp detail even at night.

For the wireless mesh network, the rooftop of a 54-story L.A. skyscraper serves as a relay site between the Axis cameras and radio nodes throughout the route. This allows video footage to flow freely to the LAPD central command post as well as mobile devices in the field despite the large physical distances from point-to-point. All live viewing and video archiving of the Mission 26 event will be done using Milestone XProtect Professional video management software (VMS), a comprehensive open platform VMS that is ideal for live monitoring with efficient search tools to manage, locate and export video evidence.

The police department has used similar technology to monitor several high-profile events in Los Angeles, including the Academy Awards, L.A. Lakers and Kings victory parades and other large city gatherings.

"This leap-frog style, on-the-fly mesh network build-out is such a unique surveillance installation. It proves once again that the LAPD’s counter-terrorism and special operations bureau is at the forefront of using technology to protect the city’s people and assets," said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager, Axis Communications, Inc. "IP video surveillance opens the doors to a world of innovative surveillance opportunities, and we’re honored to be working with the LAPD to secure this historic journey of a true national treasure."

Here's Why Your Employees Are Just Not That Into You Are you frustrated with employees who seem to be more “It’s all about me” than “How can I help my employer?” Do you wish your employees shared your commitment to your organization’s goals and success? If you can relate, join the club. The majority of employees are not particularly “into” their employer, the organization’s well being, or its goals. (Become engaged)

Having strong relationships with your business partners is critical if you're to be successful. Regardless of how good you are at your job, without strong relationships your value decreases significantly and in some cases almost disappears. Developing those relationships can be extremely difficult because at times they're driven by factors outside of your control, by personal likes and dislikes, by personal agendas, by your own successes and failures, and by your own approach to each individual. Relationships are the absolute key to success and they should drive most of what you do each and every day. Viewing your business partners as "internal customers" might help in this daily task that so many take lightly. By applying the same customer service principles one would use with an external customer to your internal customer, or your business partner, you might find surprising results.
