Dangerous times for private security Nine security officers suffered severe traumatic injuries, gunshot wounds and in four cases death, during a forty-eight hour period this week-end in America. Between September 2011 and September 2012, 129 security officers were killed in the US. Sixty eight of those officers were shot to death. Armed confrontations, assaults, serious injuries and a dramatic rise in security officer deaths are making the news headlines across the country everyday and yet no one is standing up for the more than three million security officers facing these dangers. The security industry today is increasingly dangerous and we must provide the training and tools to the people doing the job. (Source

Senator Rockefeller (D-WVa.) sends a letter to every CEO of the Fortune 500 companies in America (including yours) asking them about their views on cybersecurity. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WVa.) hopes cybersecurity legislation can be revived in Congress by avoiding "the filter of beltway lobbyists," and connecting directly with the nation's top business leaders. The letter includes eight questions to the CEOs about whether their companies have adopted a set of best practices on cybersecurity, how they were developed and what their concerns are about government involvement in private-sector cybersecurity. Rockefeller asked for responses by Oct. 19. (Source

Why my employees won't steal from me: 5 myths 1. They Like Me, 2. They're My Best Employees, 3. I Show That I Trust Them, 4. They Have a Clean Background, 5. I Pay Them a Higher Wage. You can be PCI compliant and have your devices PA-DSS [Payment Application Data Security Standard] approved. But if they leave networks open or default passwords in place, then they're going to be breached." Just like the Subway attacks where the two Romanians who plead guilty to 146,000 cards and linked to $10M in fraud losses. To help retailers address some of those common network vulnerabilities, PCATS, the Coalition of Associations for Retail Data Security and the National Restaurant Association are assisting smaller merchants with basic security steps - steps that address risk mitigation rather than security standard compliance, Taylor says. "At PCATS, we have developed a list of eight points for POS security," he says. "If Subway had these eight points, then it would not have been breached." (Source

Axis Dramatically Improves Image Quality of its Popular Fixed Network Cameras with the Addition of Lightfinder Technology

Four new AXIS P13 Series cameras feature increased processing power and serial port for pan/tilt head with outdoor-ready and HDTV resolution options

CHELMSFORD, Mass. – September 24, 2012 – Axis Communications, the global market leader in network video, today brings enhanced processing performance and the latest imaging technology, including color-at-night Lightfinder, to the robust and successful AXIS P13 Series. New AXIS P13 Network Cameras, available in indoor and outdoor-ready models, are suitable for numerous applications, including low light conditions, and will be ideal for city surveillance, transportation, retail, education, banking and industrial surveillance installations.

AXIS P1354 and the equivalent outdoor-ready AXIS P1354-E Network Cameras provide HDTV 720p resolution based on a top-quality 1/3" image sensor, while AXIS P1353 and the outdoor-ready AXIS P1353-E cameras provide SVGA resolution. The new AXIS P13 Series models are also equipped with a serial port for a pan/tilt head and other accessories, with edge storage support featuring a microSD/MicroSDHC slot.

"Lightfinder, which enables color, detailed video in the lowest of light – even down to subtle moonlight illuminating a scene – was a real eye opener for the industry when we first launched the technology last year in the award-winning AXIS Q1602 Network Camera. We’ve since brought the technology to the popular AXIS P33 Series fixed domes, and today significantly improve the image quality of the AXIS P13 Series in low lighting conditions," said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager, Axis Communications, Inc. "This couldn’t be done without the enhanced processing power found inside these new cameras, which is also a big benefit for running intelligent video analytics."

AXIS P13 Series Network Cameras are quick and easy to install with remote zoom and focus for fine tuning, and come equipped with a pixel counter to ensure the camera’s angle of view is optimized at the required resolution for the area to be monitored. Support for standard, environment-friendly Power over Ethernet requires only one network cable to carry both power and data, which is the case even for weatherproof models that operate in extreme temperatures from -40°F to 122°F. Additionally, when used with the free, ASIS Accolades-winning AXIS Camera Companion software client, customers can create an affordable IP surveillance solution to remotely view and manage video from up to 16 cameras per site.

AXIS P13 Series is supported by the industry’s largest base of video management software through the Axis Application Development Partner Program as well as AXIS Camera Station. The cameras include AXIS Camera Application Platform support for software developers to provide the camera with intelligent capabilities, AXIS Video Hosting System for cloud-based surveillance, and ONVIF for easy camera system integration.

The cameras are expected to be available in Q4 2012 through Axis’ distribution channels at the following suggested retail prices: $699 for AXIS P1353; $949 for AXIS P1353-E; $799 for AXIS P1354; and $1,049 for AXIS P1354-E.

6 Habits of Extraordinary Bosses For the past two decades, Geoffrey James has been interviewing and observing successful C-level executives to discover the secrets of their success. In a previous post from April of this year, he documented the core beliefs of extraordinary bosses. Now it's time for something more tactical: the simple ground rules for managing a team effectively. 3 Easy Ways To Be A Better Leader Media coverage of business leadership typically focuses on high-profile events. In reality, 90 percent of business leadership is the unglamorous hard work that's done in the trenches every day. The good news is that by focusing on just three everyday behaviors, you can pull real gold out of your daily grind and transform even the most mundane daily activity into a rich opportunity to grow both your own leadership skills and your business. As a "service provider" one must always remember the golden rule, that the customer is always right. Now, we all know that isn't the case, but if we approach it that way the barriers or silos tend to disappear. At the end of the day, Loss Prevention is a service and, as such, we have internal and external customers. Those customers deserve best in class service and it's a wise person that always aims at delivering such service that the customers become Raving Fans, which is probably the simplest and most profound business book I've ever read by Ken Blanchard. Pick up a copy. It only takes 2 hours to read and just might change your perspective on creating "Raving Fans." Because those Fans can have an impact on your career long term, I assure you!
