Chanel files suit on 399 websites in Las Vegas claiming trademark infringement and selling counterfeit Chanel-branded goods.  Probably operating out of China and other foreign jurisdictions, they're using search engine optimization tools to increase exposure and sales.  Tiffany filed almost an exact suit against 223 websites in the same court this past April.  And one of the same attorneys filed one on 182 other websites on behalf of Louis Vuitton May 10.   The lawsuits say that because of the explosion of counterfeiting on the Internet, luxury retailers have to "file a massive number of lawsuits, often it turns out, against the same individuals and groups." Michaels pays $1.8 million to New York to settle deceptive-advertising charges when they offered discounts over the past two years while charging full price.  They operate 48 stores in New York and the state attorney general had begun tracking them in 2009.  Michaels has instituted new advertising policies in May to comply with the findings.  (Source cbslocal.com)

New OpSec study shows online counterfeiting presents a serious risk to consumer safety with reports of urine and other toxic materials found in imitation perfumes and some counterfeiters able to produce and ship millions of units each month.  "In the past, counterfeit health and beauty products were typically focused on high end products, but they have evolved to include everyday personal care items. The anonymity of the Internet fuels an online marketplace where counterfeiters can thrive."  (Source businesswire.com)

ORC group found to be operating in Youngstown, OH stealing from numerous Home Depot's throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania and selling their goods at the Open Hearth Bar in Youngstown.  The police are continuing their investigation.  (Source vindy.com)

The apprehension of two major ORC rings will be announced in the Daily next week.

Shoppers will be greeted by fewer employees this holiday season, and those workers who are on hand are expected to encounter shoppers spending less this year as the weak economy continues to take its toll. Retail executives are already expressing muted holiday cheer in a number of ways. They are bemoaning lower mall traffic, muting their sales expectations, lowering their inventories and pruning their prices to draw customers in.  "It's pretty clear they need a reason to shop," Kohl's Chief Executive Kevin Mansell said of consumers at an industry conference last week.  (Source marketwatch.com)

Halloween City will hire 10,000 seasonal employees to staff hundreds of temporary locations.  A great opportunity for a Loss Prevention consultant!  (Source prnewswire.com)

Constitution Project, a Washington think tank, is calling for limits on law enforcement's use of GPS tracking of the movement of suspects and states police should be required to obtain a search warrant for any GPS surveillance that lasts more than 24 hours.  The Supreme Court will be reviewing this in November and the Obama administration says warrants would hamper law enforcement and aren't needed because the surveillance monitors movements on public streets.  (Source Associated Press)

Sweltering conditions inside an Amazon.com warehouse in eastern Pennsylvania over the summer sent several employees to hospitals and led to an OSHA inspection that issued no fines, but made recommendations on how the company could improve its heat-stress management plan at their Breinigsville, PA warehouse.  (Source Associated Press)

Pay phone owner of 165 phones makes 8 million robotic bogus calls and racks up $4 million at 50 cents a call for toll-free calls and plead guilty yesterday.  (Source Associated Press)

With everything that goes on in one's personal and professional life, it's oftentimes difficult to be able to really focus on the day's objectives.  It's easy to get lost in everything going on around you and, while no one can bat 1,000 everyday, you've got to be able to separate -- to use your work as a form of escape from everything and to get lost in your work.  Your work can give your mind the chance to separate from virtually anything going on in your life which allows your subconscious time to rethink-refresh- and hopefully see things more clearly.  It's like using work as therapy.  The trick is forcing yourself to do it.  Much easier said then done.
