Last week's Retail Bulletin Loss Prevention Summit in London, which was sponsored by Vangent, was a great success and highlighted the crucial need for staff engagement in retailers' Loss Prevention strategies.  A key point that emerged is that there seems to be a 'golden triangle' that loss prevention professionals have to create and maintain:

1. Ensuring the business has the right tools, infrastructure and procedures (incl. pre-screening of staff).
2. Ensuring that staff have been given the right skills and are supported and incentivized to exhibit the right behaviors.
3. Ensuring that every employee in the business (leadership, head office, and front-line) is engaged with loss prevention.

Eric Hutchison, Vice President, Risk & Talent Management Solutions at Vangent said that employee risk assessment can reduce the chances of internal theft, fraud and staff turnover. He commented that according to research carried out by G4S Secure Solutions this year, 1 in 10 UK retail employees have stolen from their company.

Violent crime, anti-social behavior and ORC is on the increase, according to Mark Stevenson, National Loss Prevention Manager, Tates Ltd.  Additional insights on loss prevention was provided by Professor Joshua Bamfield, Director, Centre for Retail Research who said that refund fraud is on the increase.

There were a number of excellent presentations by Loss Prevention executives and if you'd like to access the video of all the presentations, please contact Jane Turnbull at

Richemont subsidiaries, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, win a $37.4 million default judgment against Concept Designs, a New York manufacturer for trademark infringement, counterfeiting, unfair competition, and false advertising.  While Concept Designs's "sole owner" responded to the first complaint and invoked his rights against self-incrimination he failed to answer the amended complaint.  The original complaint also targeted Daniel Markus Jewelers, based in Newark, N.J., for selling counterfeits over its websites and on eBay.   While not admitting the company sold any counterfeits, Daniel Markus alleges in a cross-claim that Concept Designs made "false, intentional, and material misrepresentations" about the authenticity of its products.  (Source

Counterfeit goods trafficking in the Philippines is up 62% over last year and seizures have surpassed $87 million.  The worldwide figures for counterfeiting are escalating and expected to double over the next 5 years alone.  (Source

m-Commerce is a "game changer" for Wal-Mart and they expect smartphone sales to exceed regular phone sales this year.  Smartphone penetration among Wal-Mart customers is roughly on par with the U.S. average of almost 40%.  (Source

Albertsons said late Friday that it may close up to 100 stores in the United Food and Commercial Workers Union of over 60,000 decides to strike.  Health benefits were the big stumbling block last week when on Friday the union gave the 72 hour strike notification warning.  (Source

Last week's video of the Walgreens pharmacist shooting back at robbers on May 8th was suppose to be confidential and Walgreen has filed an emergency motion to keep the video confidential.  The pharmacist attorney released the video as part of an effort to get public support after Walgreens fired him for opening fire.  Walgreens has asked the judge to order sanctions, and order that a jury cannot hear the claims because Hoven's attorneys "seriously jeopardized Walgreens' ability to receive a fair trial."  (Source

A man authorities say was part of a Brooklyn husband-and-wife identity theft team has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the deaths of three identity theft victims.  (Source

The FBI's Cyber Crime Division warned Congress last week of the growing third-party payment processor breaches, ATM skimming, point  of sale schemes and mobile banking exploitation.  Newer threats involve sophisticated ATM skimming devices, such as Bluetooth-enabled wireless skimmers that were found at a number of gas stations in the Denver area, and malicious "tweets," which criminals are sending through iPhone Twitter apps and contain links to malware.  The recent phishing crimes follow a string of widely publicized attacks in 2011, including the e-mail address security breach at marketing firm Epsilon and a skimming scam that targeted national craft chain Michaels.  (Source

Tyco International Ltd. said Monday it plans to separate into three independent, publicly traded companies, a move that will mark its second breakup since 2007.  The company, which is incorporated in Switzerland, will create an ADT North America residential security business and separate companies for flow control products and commercial fire and security. Tyco said the new companies will have greater flexibility to pursue their own growth strategies than they would under the current corporate structure.  (Source Associated Press)

Violent crime dropped 6 percent in 2010, marking the fourth straight year of year-to-year declines, while property crime was down for the eighth straight year, falling 2.7 percent, the FBI reported Monday.  Nationwide, there were an estimated 1.2 million violent crimes in 2010 and an estimated 9 million property crimes.  (Source Associated Press)

Trying to avoid the fate of Borders, Netflix is separating the DVD-by-mail plan from the online streaming service.  Red Box, Hulu, Amazon and other services are really hitting Netflix's DVD business and online streaming is the future and Netflix is reacting.  Compounding this is the production house costs increases they'll be facing next year and the price hikes they just passed on to their subscribers which caused them to lose over 1 million subscribers last month alone.  (Source Associated Press)

A day after a recent report surfaced that an Apple employee had lost a prototype for a new but unreleased iPhone at a Northern California watering hole, two job listings appeared on Apple's website for managers of "new product security." Such workers would join a team at the $350 billion company that has included ex-FBI agents and other highly trained pros with backgrounds in intelligence and law enforcement.  "Corporate espionage, that's big money. Billion-dollar money. The paranoia is justified," said Jim Stickley, co-founder of corporate security consulting firm TraceSecurity "Whatever they're trying to do, their competitors want to know. Everybody wants to know."  Wanted: experienced security professional. Must have plan to thwart Chinese counterfeiters, protect secret blueprints from spies and keep workers from leaving super-secret unreleased smartphones behind in bars.  (Source Associated Press)

The scene this weekend at the last of the remaining Borders bookstores to close was more like a memorial service than a funeral. Shoppers reminisced fondly about their beloved bookseller rather than grieve its loss.  (Source Associated Press)

eBay Global Investigators Support Large Scale Stolen Goods Case

eBay Global Asset Protection investigators supported a long-term criminal investigation into the theft and ultimate sale of stolen goods leads to jail sentence. Hundreds of stolen Berghaus & North Face jackets were discovered boxed & stored at a number of locations The suspect, aged 33, was jailed for 18 months after he admitted handling and receiving stolen goods. Police discovered $170K of stolen goods when they raided three premises the court heard. At sentencing, the judge said: "I appreciate most of these goods were returned but you had them in order to sell on eBay. You were sent to prison before for handling stolen Land Rovers and have plainly not learnt your lesson. These were obviously well-planned offences, described as professional in nature."  Click here for full article.

No matter what you do, there's always two sides in every stadium, both supported by their beliefs, convictions and opinions and both equally opposed in their desire to win.  While winning is everyone's objective, how you play the game is in actuality more important.  Regardless of how the other side plays, one must always remember that afterwards regardless of the win or loss everyone respects the one who played like a professional and gave it their best.

Just a thought
