The 340-store Disney chain takes their NYC flag ship concept of providing "the best 30 minutes of a child's day" to Canada by opening a 5,800-sq.-ft. totally interactive store with the "mirror" and a miniature theater playing on-demand content and making their store as close to being at one of their amusement parks as they can.  From trees that change colors and backgrounds to hidden Mickey Mouse ears and scent machines pumping out licensed aromas, the store totally immerses the child in the Disney World.  Opening their NYC flagship in Times Square last year, their sales have been fantastic.  Rolling out 19 new-concept stores last year and opening 30 this year, this is a retailer to watch as they reinvent the retail experience for children and the inner child in all of us, in North America.  (Source

A huge 82% of consumer polled say they plan to spend less this holiday season.  With more then 50% expecting the economy to slow and 51% saying they did not feel better about their family finances versus a year earlier this holiday season could be a nail-biter until we get thru it.  Inventory levels are low and some stores actually look almost bare.  Have the merchants gone too far with keeping the inventory tight?  (Source

A new Symantec "2011 State of Security Survey" found 47% of respondents said the increasing use of mobile devices, including smartphones and tablet computers, are complicating efforts to protect computer systems against attacks; 46% said the same about social media. The report says threats can come from such areas as loosely protected servers and malware that manages to make it into business systems.  (Source

PayPal Moves One Step Closer to Brick & Mortar Payment Capability

eBay Inc. hosted hundreds of retailers this week, to showcase the next big step for its PayPal unit; facilitating payments at traditional brick-and-mortar shops. PayPal set up faux grocery & hardware demonstrating technology that lets users punch numbers into point-of-sale terminals and make purchases with their PayPal accounts. The company aims to make the technology publicly available in April. PayPal President Scott Thompson said he does not necessarily see expansion to brick-and-mortar as competitive with payment processing giants, because PayPal enables multiple different payment methods, but PayPal can potentially offer merchants lower fees, by enabling users to pay directly from a bank account and cutting out middlemen such as credit card firms. That, he acknowledged, does present an inherent competitive threat to traditional players.  Click here for full article.

Scotland's most prolific "Queen super-shoplifting mob BOSS" gets six months in jail on one count, but faces more counts in different towns.  Annette Daniel is the sister of "notorious" Glasgow gangster Jamie Daniel and stayed out of jail for years by signing up stooges to take the blame for her.  Dodging warrants police grabbed her at the Glasgow airport.  Her gang became so notorious that store detectives throughout the UK knew them.  She leads an ever-changing army of thieves who target shops across Britain and mainland Europe.  Using distraction techniques, decoys and tag-removers, the thieves take arrest as an occupational hazard, but those on the lower rungs of the organization usually bear the brunt of any court penalties.  Daniel has been arrested repeatedly, but cut deals with prosecutors to walk free while minions took the rap.  Drug-dependent and asking for help, she waved to friends in the gallery before she was led away.  (Source

Tide has become an ORC Hot Item and thieves are cleaning up all over! Laundry detergent is a hot item in Prince Georgeís County, Md., lately. Prince Georgeís County police's organized retail crime squad is investigating theft after theft of Tide. It can be a more lucrative crime than you might imagine. Last month, a man was arrested at a Bowie Safeway with a car full of Tide and $96,000 in the bank. "It's big money and itís tax-free money," Sgt. Aubrey Thompson said. From one Safeway alone, thousands of bottles of Tide have been taken, Thompson said. Thieves load up shopping carts with the detergent, maybe as many as 20 bottles, and then roll Tide right out of the store without paying, police said. The hot Tide is then resold at flea markets, convenience stores, nail salons and bus stops. (Source:
