News Brief - Sponsored by WG Security Products

John Troxel was named Director of Risk Management for Eickhoff Shoprite. Before joining with Eickhoff Shoprite, John spent almost 12 years at Toys R Us as a Regional Asset Protection Manager. Prior to that, he spent five years at Bradlees as a District Loss Prevention Manager. Congrats John!

The New England's 6th annual ORC Symposium & Trade Show is filling up with only two vendor sponsorships left and a great line up of speakers. Expecting over 300 executives with 25 vendor sponsors the event will include Chief Raymond Schultz of Albuquerque's police department as one of the main speakers. Chief Schultz is one of the founding fathers of the public private partnership model that has just helped fuel the successful development of over 20 ORC groups in the U.S. Capt. Billy Williams of the LAPD, who helped develop and lead Los Angeles's ORC effort, actually attributes Albuquerque's model as the one they copied to develop the largest ORC group in the U.S. New England's group, led by Kevin Plante, Manager of U.S. Retail Loss Prevention Operations for Staples, has truly developed and next month begins six to eight hour ORC training seminars at the Massachusetts State Police Academy. Monday we'll be publishing the event's agenda. If you're in New England on Sept. 20th be sure to attend the event and hear a great group of speakers and meet one of the founding fathers of today's ORC effort.

He is also charged with aggravated assault for pointing a gun at a Best Buy employee. (Source examiner.com)

Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, and Red Lobster workers are suing Darden Restaurants
. The lawsuit filed in Miami federal court claims that Darden Restaurants Inc. violated federal labor laws by underpaying thousands of servers across the country. The lawsuit seeks to collectively represent Darden employees who worked there from August 2009 to present.  (Source msn.com)

Amazon's million square foot Indiana warehouse is nearing completion
. The $150 million warehouse and distribution center plans to open by October 1 in order to process Christmas orders with several hundred seasonal workers. The warehouse will employ around 1,000 people by 2015. In 2007, state lawmakers promised not to immediately push for online sales tax collection and in January, Governor Mitch Daniels announced that Amazon would begin collecting the state's 7% sales tax from customers in 2014.  (Source yahoo.com)

The back and forth of self-checkout - with Ikea removing them from all U.S. locations
. The shrink issues are obvious and you can find articles supporting both sides of the debate, but at the end of the day it's the consumer who will dictate where they will be and where they won't be. And in an Ikea store where boxes are huge and hard to handle, customers don't want the hassle and the self-checkout lanes have proven difficult for them so they're taking them out. This whole issue will find its balance based on the product line offered in a specific retailer and based on the maturing e-customer. As the customer develops and matures over time self-checkout will win and evolve to the point where the cell phone will actually be the cash register itself. (Source tbo.com)

BYOD - Bring your own device to work and access the employer's network - 71% don't have policies and procedures in place for security
. Organizations are split on who takes responsibility for the security of BYOD devices. So, what should security’s role be in developing a BYOD policy at their organization? We understand that most consider this to be an IT security responsibility but according to this article even those executives may not be in the game yet. And with the issues that many have already felt with data breaches and the increased incidents of the "insider threat" we submit that it is the responsibility of all loss prevention/asset protection executives to be involved with any and all areas of the business that poses a threat to their company. You don't need to be a subject matter expert to manage something, but you do need to be holistic about your approach towards protecting all of the assets of your organization. (Source csoonline.com)

Norton extrapolated 71 million cybercrime victims in the U.S., with damages of $21 billion in recent survey - the results of which are being questioned
. Symantec's Norton group released a new cybercrime study this week that found the average cost of online crime per victim declined during the past year. However, while down, at $110 billion a year globally that's still a very big global business. The survey methodologies have been validated but the FTC found 280,000 cases of bona fide identify theft. "Even if you assume that every one of these were 'cybercrime related,' that's also just 2% of the 71 million U.S. victims figure that Norton cited," said Andrew Jaquith, CTO of Perimeter E-Security. Norton stands by their research. (Source csoonline.com)

PCI DSS Clarifications Coming
. The PCI Security Standards Council next week will provide clarifications about how merchants, acquirers and others should comply with the PCI Data Security Standard. But the council won't formally update the standards until next year. (Source govinfosecurity.com)

China's largest e-commerce company Taobao signs agreement with the Motion Picture Association to cut the sale of counterfeit items on its site
. Under the new agreement, the Chinese company and the MPA will work together to identify and take down listings on Taobao Marketplace that are believed to be counterfeit goods or that "infringe the copyrights of MPA member companies." (Source cnet.com)

With sales decreases of 4% to 6% every month since dropping Express Scripts customers Walgreens takes them back on Sept. 15th. Express Scripts, being one of the largest if not the largest prescription providers for the medical insurance industry in the U.S., had dropped Walgreens Jan 1 after not being able to reach an agreement with them over their charges. They cover millions of people and during that period bought another large provider and took them away from Walgreens as well - a brilliant move. Well, Rite Aid and CVS saw huge and consistent increases in same store sales and took all the business away from Walgreens. Well, as of Sept. 15th Walgreen will now accept Express Script insurers. Do they get that 5% back? Talk about a Mexican stand off. We wonder who blinked first?

Gap takes its online brand Piperlime to the real world with opening its first store in NYC

The company launched its first bricks-and-mortar store for its Athleta division in San Francisco in 2011. It now operates 23 Athleta stores and has plans to open 10 more in the coming months. NYC Sunglasses seller and owner of DecorMyEyes.com gets four years in prison
. Selling counterfeit, defective, damaged and used sunglasses as the real McCoy's wasn't enough because if you tried to return them he'd stalk you - threaten you - use your credit cards - charge 20% re-stocking fees and send false and obscene e-mails to customers' professional associates or colleagues. It was so bad, the judge sent him to prison for four years with three years of supervised release and ordered to pay over $96,000 in fines and restitution. And it was an online retailer! Coin dealer's family won't get $80M for 10 rare gold 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle coins found in safety deposit box because the Philadelphia Mint cashier probably stole them back in the thirties The Mint cashier had managed to give or sell some of them to a local coin dealer, Israel Switt who kept them in his safety deposit box. After his death his family drilled into it and found them. When the Langbords gave the coins to the Philadelphia Mint for authentication, the government seized them without compensating the family. The Langbords sued, saying the coins belonged to them. In 2011 a jury said the coins belonged to the government and last week a judge ruled " "the coins in question were not lawfully removed from the United States Mint." So they miss out on $80M and will be filing an appeal. (Source 670kboi.com)

Nice try junior! Florida teen poses as a cop to get buddy out of shoplifting bust
. 17-year-old flashed a phony badge and had a pellet pistol on his hip. He led his friend out of the store in fake cuffs until store employees got wise and called the real cops. Give him a 'A' for ingenuity. The sharp-eyed employee watched the "cop" walk the young suspect outside, where he took off the cuffs. Then the employee called the police — the real ones. Retail Council of CanadaThoughts on the Upcoming Retail Council of Canada's Loss Prevention Conference

By Stephen O'Keefe, Vice President, Operations
Retail Council of Canada

We are days away from Retail Council of Canada’s Loss Prevention Conference. Our outstanding agenda kicks off with a series of roundtable discussions. The roundtable topics have been selected by LP professionals and will have a dual benefit. Firstly they will allow for peer to peer dialogue on topics of interest to them. Secondly, these discussions will ensure RCC is positioned to respond to some of the major LP industry issues. These discussions will set RCC’s LP agenda in the coming year.

The 2012 Shrinkage Survey preliminary report, conducted by PricewaterhouseCooper will be released on Day 1 as well. PwC will use 2008 comparative results to present the data to delegates. While I can’t disclose any information, I can say that some of the trends will be of great interest to many retailers.

RCC and our Conference Planning Committee of LP industry professionals worked closely together to identify timely issues and the most appropriate speakers to deliver that important content. We did this to ensure that the conference was as relevant as possible to delegates.

Our "exhibit hall" is made up of 28 vendors. We limited the number to 28 in order to provide an intimate setting and a chance for delegates and vendors to delve into industry issues and solutions. Once again this year TYCO with its Sensormatic brand is the Presenting Sponsor of this event.

Online registration for this event will be closed on Monday September 10 at 12:00 pm EST. We hope you will join us for a day and a half of thought-provoking speakers, engaging content and excellent networking opportunities.

You can access more information about the event at www.rcclpconference.ca

Quebec's premier-designate moves to block "foreign companies" takeovers - casting a shadow over the proposed $1.8 billion takeover of Quebec home improvement retailer Rona Inc. by U.S. giant Lowe’s Cos. Inc. The PQ’s victory "may seal the deal against Lowe’s expression of interest in Rona," Credit Suisse analyst Gary Balter wrote. "Combined with the negative reaction by many shareholders and opposition from Rona franchisees, this deal is looking very unlikely." Here's a Canadian Province who once tried to split from Canada and become their own nation in recent times. They're extremely prideful and proud of their French heritage, as they should be, and coming to do business there in the Canadian Push is one thing but trying to buy one that doesn't want to be bought may be an entirely different matter as Lowe's is finding out. It'll never happen. Just a thought for this writer. (Source theglobeandmail.com)

Canada's Darling - Lululemon Athletica Inc. looking to grow by selling more children's clothes in its Ivivva Athletica stores. With seven locations across Canada, including a brand new outlet in Winnipeg, Ivivva is now expanding to the U.S. This month, five opened in locations south of the border, including one across from the Children’s Museum of Manhattan in New York. (Source macleans.ca)

The American Push - Seems like they're doing the same thing the U.S. is doing - crossing the border for growth. With Lululemon, Joe Fresh, Nygard, and an HBC division set to compete with Bed Bath & Beyond - all growing in the U.S. In ten years the border will be mostly invisible for trade - as it should be.

4 members of multistate $2M ID theft ring that hit retailers found guilty The ring ran from 2006 until the end of 2011, and involved more than 100 people. Members stole ID information and used it to create fake IDs and counterfeit checks. The fraudulent documents were often used to make purchases at retail stores. Later, and often on the same day, the items were returned for cash that was divided among members of the ring. (Source twincities.com)

Award-winning AXIS Camera Companion Client Software Upgraded to Support Audio, Video Identification, Public View Monitors and Corridor Format

After topping 20,000 downloads, ASIS Accolades-winning software a popular choice for retail and small business environments; new AXIS M1014 Network Surveillance Kits create most affordable 720p HDTV four-camera solution

CHELMSFORD, Mass. – ASIS International Booth #2622 – September 5, 2012 – Axis Communications, the world leader in network video, today announces a major upgrade to the free award-winning software client, AXIS Camera Companion, that includes support for audio, Public View Monitors, Axis’ Corridor Format and video identification. These upgrades to AXIS Camera Companion, which was recently named "Security’s Best Winner" in the 2012 ASIS Accolades Awards Competition, will be especially beneficial for retail stores that have surveillance systems of 16 cameras or less.

"The first version of AXIS Camera Companion was well received by the market. By August 2012, we had already registered more than 20,000 downloads of the software. This indicates that users really appreciate the simplicity of AXIS Camera Companion and the superb HDTV image quality offered by IP cameras," said Peter Friberg, director of system and services, Axis Communications, AB. "Based on input from customers and partners, we are taking the next step (with this upgrade) and introducing a selection of features that will add even more value for small business owners."

New features of AXIS Camera Companion 1.2 include:

• Support for one-way audio to easily listen in on the area under surveillance. Since AXIS Camera Companion leverages IP technology, audio integration is simple and affordable with a single network cable to transmit both audio and video.

• Integration with Public View Monitors for loss prevention in retail environments. By downloading a third-party application to a mobile device, the cameras can be configured to stream live images to any standard monitor.

• Ability to leverage Axis’ unique Corridor Format with compatible network cameras to produce a portrait-view, 9:16 aspect ratio for more accurate surveillance of vertically-oriented areas such as hallways, staircases and aisles.

• Features for digital identification of exported material to ensure that the video is accurately preserved for use as evidence.

Axis also announces the availability of competitively-priced AXIS M1014 Network Camera Series Surveillance Kits, a package of four 720p HDTV IP cameras coupled with an AXIS Camera Companion CD starting at $799 that is perfect for the smaller retail store.

Unlike analog CCTV installations, AXIS Camera Companion does not require a central recording device – i.e. a digital video recorder (DVR), network video recorder (NVR) or even a computer to operate – making the IP-based digital surveillance system affordable and easy to use for small camera system owners. All images are recorded onto a standard SD memory card inside each camera or video encoder, and the system continues to record even if the network fails.

The free AXIS Camera Companion client software enables surveillance system owners of 16 cameras or less to use network cameras – including HDTV-quality cameras – to help clearly identify intruders, shoplifters and other incidents as part of an affordable IP-based surveillance system. Video can be viewed live and recordings played back either onsite or remotely over the Internet, and the system supports third-party apps on leading smartphones and tablets, including iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The system supports motion detection and PTZ control, and video clips and snapshots can be easily exported to colleagues and authorities.

AXIS Camera Companion will be formally named the ASIS Accolades "Security’s Best Winner" at the ASIS International 2012 award luncheon on Monday, Sept. 10th. Additionally, the software client will be on display alongside the recently announced AXIS P3384/-V Fixed Dome Network Camera in the Accolades Showcase in the Grand Hall during next week’s show. Winners will also be highlighted during the Seminar’s "What’s New on the Floor" session on Tuesday, Sept. 11th at 1:45-3:00 p.m. in Room 114 of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

AXIS Camera Companion was also honored with an ESX Maximum Impact Award as the Best Video Surveillance System in June 2012.

The new AXIS Camera Companion 1.2 software client is available immediately for free download from http://www.axis.com/products/cam_companion_software/index.htm.

Every industry, every company has its core objectives of adding value and impacting the whole. In theory, all of us are are on a mission to make a difference and create change that ultimately benefits the industry, the company we're with, and ourselves. At the end of the day, it's all about the people that are feeding this evolution and while that's our strength, it's also our weakness. Regardless of how strong our product, service or LP model is, it always comes down to the people and the relationships. And with those two variables constantly changing, sometimes for the better and at times for the worst, it's how you deal with the worst that determines how far you'll go and who you are. Facing it is the key and denial is the lock.
