Retailers' shoplifting battle is still costing consumers Experts estimate the average family pays between $400 and $2,000 a year as a result of merchants and manufacturers increasing what they charge to offset their losses. Those losses totaled $34.5 billion nationwide in 2011, according to the latest survey conducted by the University of Florida for the National Retail Federation. But, that was down $2.6 billion from 2010. Study author and UF criminology professor Dr. Richard Hollinger credits new anti-theft technologies and refocused law enforcement efforts for the reduction. New technologies allow retailers to get the upper hand too, according to Lee Pernice, director of retail and marketing for Boca Raton-based Tyco Integrated Security. (Source sun-sentinel.com)

INSIDER THREAT - Unnamed group claims to have stolen, in a late night office theft at PricewaterhouseCoopers Franklin, Tenn. office, Romney's tax returns prior to 2010 and they want $1M by Sept 28th or they'll release them. The group contends it gained access on Aug. 25 to PWC's facility through someone working on the third floor. Romney's tax returns prior to 2010, stored on the second floor in suite 260, were copied during the night, the group said. The encrypted documents were delivered on flash drives to Democrat and Republican offices in Williamson County, PWC and will be sent to major news organizations. The financial consultancy said it is working with the U.S. Secret Service. Officials from the law enforcement agency did not have an immediate comment late Wednesday. (Source csoonline.com)

In Virginia organized crime & drug dealers are turning into cigarette smugglers and the legislature is looking for ways to stop it That's because they can buy a pack of premium cigarettes for about $5.55 in Virginia and sell it for a big profit on the black market in New York City, where a higher cigarette excise tax pushes the retail price to about $14 a pack. Smuggle enough cigarettes and the payday can be enormous - a car can carry 10 cases of cigarettes — there are 60 cartons in a case — with an estimated profit of $34,000. Upgrade to a van, and 50 cases can turn a $170,000 profit. A large truckload can haul 800 cases and net a profit of $4 million. A Virginia State Police agent's observation that bootlegged cigarettes now have a higher profit margin than cocaine, heroin, marijuana or guns. Some cigarette traffickers seeking to maximize their illicit gains have established bogus retail operations so they can buy in bulk from wholesalers, Petoe said. He added that there are myriad other schemes involving forged tax stamps, selling cigarettes "off the books" to evade taxes, international smuggling and importing counterfeit cigarettes. The State's legislature is planning to react next year. (Source Associated Press)

Checkpoint - Helping Retailers Gwo ProfitablyCheckpoint Systems launches stylish new range of EAS antennas

Classic IP range offers retailers enhanced detection capabilities and data connectivity

THOROFARE, NJ – September, 5, 2012 – Checkpoint Systems (NYSE: CKP), a leading global supplier of shrink management, merchandise visibility and apparel labeling solutions for the retail industry, has launched a stylish new range of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) antennas which provide retailers with enhanced detection and data connectivity in a visually appealing format.

Based on retailers’ feedback, The CLASSIC IP range – comprising the CLASSIC IP STYLE and CLASSIC IP STREET antennas – includes remote reporting capability, giving operators improved store visibility with ready access to actionable data. The range also enables retailers to integrate visitor counting technology into their businesses. Store managers can monitor customer activity in store, measure the success of their marketing promotions and plan for increased staffing and stock levels in response to busier shopping periods.

Featuring Checkpoint’s energy-saving EVOLVE-ECO electronics, the CLASSIC IP STYLE and CLASSIC IP STREET antennas offer wider aisle width protection enabling retailers to better safeguard their merchandise. Per Levin, President and Chief Sales Officer of Shrink Management Solutions at Checkpoint Systems, explains:

"The Global Retail Theft Barometer highlights that shrink is at its highest level since 2007, so it is essential that retailers continue to take steps to address the problem. While retail operators understand the need for anti-theft measures, they also expect the systems to complement their store designs and provide much-needed functionality. We are confident that Checkpoint’s newest range delivers on all fronts, ensuring improved retail store operations, on-shelf availability and consumer shopping experience and to help drive sales."

Designed with input from apparel retailers, the CLASSIC IP STYLE offers the widest aisle width and class-leading detection for a small, discreet antenna. A clear plexiglas structure, integrated LEDs and base covers, available in customised colours, help the antenna to blend with any retail layout. In addition, Checkpoint’s VisiPlus units can be integrated for bi-directional overhead, wall or post-mounted visitor counting.

The CLASSIC IP STREET was also designed with feedback from retailers who expressed the need for a tough, robust solution. With its durable alloy construction, slim design and large aisle width detection, the CLASSIC IP STREET is ideal for retailers seeking a sturdy system with the added benefits found in the CLASSIC IP range.

Both antennas within this stylish CLASSIC IP range offer retailers remote support for fast, streamlined service and maintenance.

The CLASSIC IP Range is available to order now.

3 Ways to Become an Authoritative Leader, Even if You're Under 30 Young entrepreneurs, leaders, and managers can be seen as having a lack of professional experience; however, many are turning that idea on its head through a combination of hard work, knowledge, and confidence, paired with results. Here's how they do it. (Whippersnappers)

2 Things That Separate Leaders From Managers To build a successful organization and team, there needs to be a variety of people playing different roles in order for things to run smoothly. Some of these roles can be confusing, like the difference between a manager and leader. You can be a manager and a leader at the same time, but just because you're a phenomenal leader doesn't guarantee you'll be a great manager, and vice-versa. (What's the difference?)
4 Tips to Make the Most of Failure Failure is the new black. Blogs have been writing a lot about failure, mainly in a positive light: Embrace failure; fail fast and often; if you're not failing you're not trying hard enough; etc. Sure, failure may be good, but failure is only beneficial if you learn something useful from it. So the next time something goes wrong, follow these four steps. (Get your money's worth)

The Only Productivity Tip You Need By nature, you are probably a starter. The problem, of course, is that often people get excited about starting something new and that prevents them from getting around to finishing the projects they already have in progress. Before they know it, there are four or five open projects on their plates at any given time. Then at the end of the day, you still have unfinished projects. (How often you're finishing)

Tip of the Day Sponsored by: Vector Security

A career is like a horse race that starts fresh everyday, every week, every inventory period, every management change, and every new employer. Quite frankly it never stops and you don’t want it too actually. Because if it does then you’re not in the game and being in the game is what it’s all about. And as in every race some days you win, some days you show, some days you place and some days you just down right lose. The bottom line is learning how to lose with dignity and how to win with humility. But the most important thing is just staying in the game and keeping focused.

Just a Thought,
Gus Downing
