Armed Wal-Mart robbers shoot at security in Aurora, Colorado
Officers are searching for two men who robbed a Wal-Mart in Aurora Friday night and fired a gun at a security officer as they were fleeing.  The security guard was pulling up to the front of the store with his car when one of the robbers fired a round at him, witnesses said.  Witnesses said two men in black masks and black clothing came in waving guns and demanding money.  One cashier said as soon as she saw the "big gun" she took off running.  (Source: thedenverchannel.com)

Direct sales soar at J. Crew Group
Revenues increased 7% to $435.0 million. Comparable company sales increased 3% in the second quarter. Comparable company sales increased 12% in the second quarter of fiscal 2010.  J. Crew Group Inc. swung to a fiscal second-quarter loss due to a higher interest expense as a result of debt incurred in connection with the apparel retailer's move to go private, masking higher same-store sales.  Last month, J. Crew opened its first Canadian store in Toronto, marking its first international foray.  The company is the latest U.S. retailer to expand north in a bid to take advantage of Canada's growing economy.  (Source: forbes.com)

No Means Yes, Find A Way

In this day and age of doing more with less, Loss Prevention Executives must learn how to work smarter, not harder. Limited resources, reduced capital expenditures, growing overheads, shrinking margins and lower payroll budgets sometimes pose what seems like an insurmountable hurdle to overcome. When your Director submits his annual budget to the V.P. of Finance only to have it cut and sent back, you wonder how you will accomplish your goals.

Several executives have told me in the past when times were tough, "No means yes, find a way." There are three principles to live by every day that can help you do more with less.

First, there is Time Management. An L.P. Executive must understand the how to manage his or her time effectively. There are only so many hours in the day and most people spend 7-8 of those sleeping. You must learn how to prioritize tasks, eliminate time robbers and how to handle interruptions throughout the day. If you can accomplish this, you can be more productive.

Second, there is People Management. This principle starts with having the right people in the right place at the right time. People who are properly trained and who can work independently with little supervision and limited direction and who also understand the importance of Time Management.

Third, there is Workload Management. You must be able to delegate responsibilities and tasks to others and trust that they will get the job done. You must follow up to ensure that the tasks are getting done and you must convey a sense of urgency to the players without sacrificing the quality of the work being done.

If you can master these three principles you can accomplish more, feel more productive, do more with less and still have time for that all important work-life balance that we all strive for. Just a thought.

Every executive has an agenda out of absolute necessity and in the normal course of doing business.  Agendas in essence drive performance and results.  However, it's the hidden agendas that one must be on the look out for because those are the ones that do the most damage to executives and companies.  And while many tend not to acknowledge them, they do exist and finding them is the key.  Dealing with them and managing them is extremely difficult and oftentimes one finds themselves managing the aftereffect and not even seeing them until it's too late.  Just remember one thing – if you know the stripes on a Zebra you can ride the Zebra and, if you don't know the stripes, the Zebra will ride you.
