Yesterday's announcement that Lowe's will be reorganizing and going from 5 operating Divisions to 3 and from 21 operating Regions to 14 actually represents the biggest re-org and downsizing move for any retailer in the U.S. in 2011.  That means 9 LP jobs are lost and while it may not seem like many, it's a dramatic move considering the last 4 years of job cuts.  Certainly, any retailer connected to the housing industry is reeling from the devastating housing depreciation.  It's been said that close to 50% of all the homes in the U.S. are now underwater and that the housing industry may not see a turnaround until 2018 a date that may be a conservative estimate.  Given that fact, any retailer tied to that industry is facing a rough road the next few years.  Also, according to our sources, Lowe's will be allowing all 21 Regional LP exec's to re-interview for the 14 regional positions they now have  a process that is normal in this situation.

The world's 1st smart virtual store that has no products opens in South Korea that caters to smartphone users.  Homeplus, South Korea's second largest discount chain, opened a virtual store with no products that lets smartphone customers order and get delivery of 35,000 products by simply pulling out their smartphones and scanning QR (Quick Response) or barcodes of products shown in the subway station with the Homeplus app.  Customers can pick a time for delivery and stores will make deliveries every two hours for a total of ten times a day.  Hitting consumers on their way home commuting in subways and buses.  They've already had 650,000 downloads of their app as of July.  Redefining retail!  (Source

eBay Supports Investigation into Sale of Counterfeit Watches

eBay global asset protection investigators supported inquiry into sales of counterfeit designer watches that leads to an 8-month suspended jail sentence for fraudster. The suspect pleaded guilty to eight offences of selling and possessing counterfeit items for sale. Among them were watches and accessories bearing brands names such as Rolex, Breitling, Panerai and Omega. Had the goods been genuine, it is estimated they would have been worth over 900,000 (approx $1.4M USD). The court heard testimony that law enforcement had received a complaint from Rolex and that the suspect had been selling counterfeit watches. Police executed two warrants at the suspects' addresses and found a large stash of watches and watch paraphernalia. Samples were later sent to the relevant trademark holders who confirmed that they were counterfeit. Lead investigators stated "Traders who think that they can benefit from the reputation that bona fide businesses build are mistaken. Without the well known brand names being attached to the goods, these watches and accessories would be virtually worthless."

Managing your career upwards sometimes has to do with the exposure you get to new executives and new responsibilities.  The easiest way to get that exposure is to volunteer for projects, assignments, or new rollouts.  Going above and beyond your current job description is always a way to gain respect and be noticed.  The only issue there is that you've got to perform at a high level and deliver results because the worst thing one can do is volunteer and not pull it off.

Just a thought
