New British Retail Consortium survey shows UK retailers lost $323M (US) in e-crimes - higher % than retail crime loss itself Online fraud and other 'e-crimes' have cost British retailers operating over the internet at least £205m in a year, according to the first comprehensive study of the make-up and scale of crimes affecting e-commerce. The study estimates that retailers lost 0.75 percent of all sales in 2011-12, meaning that £205.4m was lost from sales of £28bn. In contrast, retail crime as a whole amounted to 0.36 percent of the £303bn value of all retail sales, according to the BRC. (Source theregister.co.uk)

Court blesses Amazon's less aggressive anti-counterfeiting program if the manufacturer has not done test buys

Mexican drug cartels have taken "complete control of counterfeiting goods in Mexico." Any knockoff items sold in El Paso are going back to fuel the needs of the cartel across the border in Ciudad Juárez. Items such as purses and bags are typically manufactured overseas and shipped to Mexico, then distributed throughout the country or smuggled across the border into the U.S. Smaller items such as DVDs and CDs are made right in Mexico. In fact, the Los Zeta cartels mark the discs with the letter “Z” to show it is their product. (Source foxnews.com)

Agilence "Far exceeds ROI expectations" in Rite Aid Roll-Out. In January, 2011 Rite Aid began a rollout of Agilence’s Hawkeye POS Video Auditing program in 590 high shrink stores with the objective of reducing their front-end shrinkage. After one full year of operations and a financial analysis, the results have far exceeded the expected ROI calculations for each unit and consequently Rite Aid has now rolled out over 1100 total locations with the possibility of many more in the coming months. Bob Oberosler, Group Vice President of Asset Protection for Rite Aid, stated that the performance and results of Agilence's POS Video Auditing have gone well beyond impacting shrinkage and have had some major wins in the operations areas as well. The results have been outstanding and, while the numbers are proprietary, their results have been very, very compelling and more than warrant an expansion of the program. Rite Aid is also currently piloting Agilence’s new store-level business intelligence solution, Retail 20/20, that will replace Navistor. Bob’s initial impression is that it is extremely user friendly; it has the ability to lay out the data in multiple ways, including graphs, and it has the ability to offer a different dashboard for different groups of users.

5 Ways to Find Your Strengths to be an Exceptional Leader In order to become better leaders, people typically focus on improving their weaknesses. But now, research is showing that developing your strengths is actually more effective. "If you concur that leadership is a set of skills and not a body of knowledge or a personality type, then learning leadership skills probably has much in common with learning any other set of skills." (Magnifying)

What Successful Night Owls Get Done Before Bed Early birds get all the credit. Research indicates that morning people tend to be more active and goal oriented, and such larks as Steve Jobs, Craig Newmark of Craigslist, and 25-year old David Karp, founder of the Tumblr blogging platform suggest that climbing the ladder of success is easier before breakfast. So does that mean night owls are at a disadvantage? Research suggests no. (Cognitive complexity)

12 Things Good Bosses Believe What makes a boss great? In 2010 Robert Sutton wrote this article based on his research. He avoids giving any advice that isn't rooted in real proof of efficacy and he passes along the techniques and behaviors that are grounded in sound research. The article may be a couple years old, but the advice is still sound and something every leader should take the time to read. (Evidence-based)

What Successful People Do With The First Hour of Their Work Day Remember when you used to have a period at the beginning of every day to think about your schedule, catch up with friends, maybe knock out a few tasks? It was called home room, and it went away after high school. But many successful people schedule themselves a kind of grown-up home room every day. You should too. (No school bell)

3VR - video surveillance, video intelligence

Sending and delivering the LP message in stores and at the corporate office is probably one of the most critical things one can do everyday. How you communicate and how you deliver your message will determine how they respond and react. If you expect to improve performance and influence change in the stores, then you've got to communicate in their words and their terms. Each company has a message, a mission and core values and your message should fit all of them and be an extension of them and not an addition to them. This breeds integration and results in inclusion, all of which are important elements of a successful executive.

Just a Thought,
Gus Downing
