Dennis Klein, Vice President, Loss Prevention for Abercrombie & Fitch has been extremely successful in re-establishing the District Loss Prevention Managers positions at Abercrombie that had been virtually eliminated in February 09' due to the recession.  Having over 28 now with plans to add even more is a great development for the industry as these are new jobs and indicate that the LP effort there is showing a great return on investment.  Operating in over 20 countries now, this brand has not only embraced international growth, they're helping to lead the way.  This also represents the second biggest LP job growth retailer this year after Burlington Coat Factory.

This suite of secure cloud-based applications and management is delivered via Interface Secure Managed Broadband, a wide-area network design featuring redundant, high-speed network connections for failover and business continuity.  (Source securitysystemsnews.com)

to compete against Pinnacle.  Non-compete agreements are taken seriously and conspiring to compete and business interference is a serious matter that all organizations have to deal with.   (Source securitysystemsnews.com)

The Ascena Retail Group, 891 Dress Barn - Maurice's - Justice stores, are operating as three separate Loss Prevention functions
in order to maintain each brand's culture and individual focus on deliverables that are driven by the needs of each individual brand.  Interestingly enough, they too are opening stores in Canada.

There's been a sharp decline in the number of retailers reporting monthly sales figures over the last few years with the reason being "companies want to align how management thinks about the business to the interest of long-term shareholders, removing short-term trading and volatility of share prices."  (Source retailsails.com)

As stores up and down the east coast prepare for hurricane Irene, let's hope the damage is minimal and we have no fatalities.  Here's when everyone's emergency preparedness programs get tested and

D&D Daily Canadian Push

The Canadian Push           Over 1,000 stores in 24 months!          The U.S. "Invasion"?

Over the last 24 months, U.S. retailers have announced and begun over a 1,000 store expansion program into Canada. Taking into consideration that the U.S. is over stored and virtually saturated with 1.1 million stores, 14.2 billion sq. ft. of retail space, and has 46.6 sq. ft. of retail space per capita, it's obvious that in order to grow mainstream, U.S. retailers must grow internationally. And Canada, the U.S.'s closest neighbor, with only 13 sq. ft. of retail space per capita – 72% less retail space per capita than the U.S. – and with a culture that is virtually the same, represents the easiest and quickest way for U.S. retailers to grow.

This "Canadian Push" series is dedicated to that effort and its objective is to provide a vehicle of information, communication, and debate for the industry that will help educate, inform, and develop the Loss Prevention efforts that are absolutely necessary to help make this massive expansion effort a success. The topics will range from supply chain issues, pricing strategies, border restrictions, x-patriot employment regulations, staffing and employment issues, legal issues surrounding employee interviews and investigations, the vendor support population, and most importantly the Canadian Loss Prevention community, itself, and their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions.

The U.S. retailers are investing billions of dollars in this effort and much is at stake. But the most important aspect of it all is that we Americans are pushing northwards as we never have before and while the investment will help both countries, we must remember that we're visitors in their country and learning their culture, the way they do things, their perceptions and opinions of this "invasion," and understanding their consumer is the priority if we expect to add value to this effort and be successful. And while Loss Prevention practices and techniques are extremely similar, there are differences, and at the end of the day it's about the people and there acceptance of our businesses in their communities.

This series is dedicated to the Loss Prevention executives in Canada and is committed to providing the information necessary to bridge two countries into one team dedicated to delivering the best Loss Prevention services and shrinkage results for our retail customers; and to delivering the safest environments for our consumers.

Look for the "Canadian Push" series every week!

Do Unto Others

Like many of you, as a young boy my parents taught me the Golden Rule – Do unto others as you'd want them to do to you. They didn't just teach this to me so I would stop picking on my younger sister. What I came to realize was that it is a life lesson both personally and professionally.

Think about the interaction you face daily. Outside of work – your significant other, your friends, your family, the Mother-in-law, even the pizza guy.

How about professionally – the conversations with peers, direction given to subordinates, reviewing opportunities with store personnel, the advice to business partners. Then there are all those meetings, the phone calls and let's not forget about the emails!

With every call, email or conversation, take the extra moment to ask yourself – is this the way I would want to be treated?

This simple step can make a significant difference to everyone you come in contact with and I'm confident it will make your parents proud.

Food for thought.

Change is the only constant.  Embracing it and dealing with it, while absolutely necessary, can be a daunting task that is difficult for everyone.  Psychologists believe that humans strive to eliminate fear by avoiding change when, in fact, change can be the best thing for us.  Those that run to it usually are in front, and those that avoid it most of the time end up in the rear.

Just a Thought
