First Lady Michelle Obama convinces Wal-Mart, Supervalu and Walgreen to commit to opening or expanding 1,500 stores in underserved communities across the U.S. and to make affordable healthier food options more accessible as part of her Partnership for a Healthier America.  Wal-Mart will open 275 to 300 stores in food deserts by 2016; Supervalu said it will build 250 Save-A-Lot stores in underserved areas over the next five years; and Walgreen  said it will expand food offerings in 1,000 stores.  A number of regional supermarkets around the country also made commitments as well.  This means LP and Safety jobs and capital expenditures as well long term. Two Director of Loss Prevention positions to be announced on August 1st.

Here's an IBM white paper on delivering cloud based security services remotely to provide security functionality and intelligence from a remotely located provider and when does it make sense to do so.  Its flexibility, cost savings, and rapid deployment make it tomorrow's answer today.  It also gives you guidelines for selecting a cloud-based security provider.  Great read and educational.  (Source idgenterprise.com)

A U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee has voted to approve a bill that would require companies to notify affected customers about data breaches and would require businesses holding personal information to establish data security programs.  The Secure and Fortify Electronic Data Act  would require breach notifications only when a customer's name, phone number or credit card numbers were compromised along with a Social Security number, driver's license number, or other government ID.  Representative Fred Upton, a Michigan Republican and chairman of the full committee said "Data breaches of consumers' personal information – whether by accident or deliberate criminal activity – can lead to identity theft, fraud, and other unlawful conduct."

Cyber security giant Symantec says it recorded more than 3 billion malware attacks last year.  Secretary of State Leon Panetta in his confirmation hearings last month said "the next Pearl Harbor we confront could very well be a cyberattack that cripples our power systems, our grid, our security systems, our financial systems, our governmental systems."  (Source Associated Press)

Aaron's Inc., is asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that the rental chain installed spyware on rental computers after being sued by a couple in Denver after they found software that enabled the computer to take photos of them in their home.  Aaron's claims it was the one franchise operator that did it and not them.  Attorney's for the franchisee defended the software as a legal way to remotely shut off non-paying customer's computers.  But that defense does not justify the ability to take pictures of customers.  (Source Associated Press)

Anonymous now says they hacked NATO and have hoards of data that would be "irresponsible" to publish.  These teenagers are just out of control and certainly don't understand the consequences of their actions.  More raids to follow!  (Source Associated Press)

South Carolina Multi-State Fencing Operation and ORC ring busted
Suspected of hundreds of thousands of dollars

Fencing operation and multi-state ORC ring identified in Goose Creek, SC, right outside of Charleston where the owner of Mr. Flaps Pawn Shop, Felicia Sanders Smith, police believe was recruiting shoplifters and sending them out with shopping lists. Deputies found over $100,000 in new pet supplies in her home and stolen goods valued at $10,000 in the store. The investigation has been going on for months and they believe another pawn shop is involved and more arrests are expected. They sold the merchandise in the store and online. As a 35-year veteran of Retail Loss Prevention, and someone who has conducted many pre-employment interviews, I thought readers might be interested in some of my favorite interview questions and the thinking behind each of them. Each day for the next five days I’ll be sharing one of the questions from my list of first interview questions. Answers to these questions tell me a lot about who a candidate is:

Day 4 - When you are not working, what do you spend your time doing?

I ask this question to get a sense of what type of balance you have in your life. You never hear old people say "I wish I'd had more time to devote to my career." If you come to work with me you're going to work hard, be called upon to work occasional nights and weekends, and be asked to go somewhere or do something on short notice. I want to know that you have a way to unwind, relax, and get more out of life than your job.

Hint: There are only a few "bad" answers to this question. If you tell me that you like to spend every weekend deep-sea-fishing or spelunking I'm probably going to give you a pass. I want people I can rely upon in an emergency. If you are out of cell-phone range every weekend, it's just not going to work out.
