eBay Asset Protection Investigations Tackles Romanian Fraud Ring

eBay Fraud & PROACT investigators identified significant suspicious activity involving a retail gift card seller and proactively reported detailed findings, account linkage and research to the Scottsdale, AZ police resulting in 36 arrests in a major fraud scheme and ORC group that generated estimated profits of $1.2M. Scottsdale Police said detectives were contacted by eBay Investigators regarding suspicious activity of a user account linked to the Scottsdale suspect. The investigation continued as a collaborative and joint venture between eBay Asset Protection Investigators, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, along with the Arizona Electronic Crimes Task Force, Maricopa County Attorney's Office, United States Secret Service, Phoenix Police and the United States Postal Inspection Service. After months of investigating, a large scale conspiracy was uncovered that appeared to be linked to Wayne Clifford Bahlman. Balham had a network of associates that would recruit persons to shoplift items from stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, and Wal-Mart and, using stolen identities, the suspects would return the stolen items at a different location for store credit. A Grand Jury indicted Bahlman and 35 others alleging more than 50 felony counts including participation in a criminal syndicate, organized retail theft, fraudulent schemes and artifices, trafficking in stolen property and forgery. With its inception in November 2010, the Washington State Organized Retail Crime Alliance rolled out their website this past May and, since that time, 5 arrests have been made.  The website alerts retailers through both email and smartphones to potential thieves and it has been very successful to date.  Scott Stanley, the Tacoma police officer who started the effort, stated that retailers in Washington State lose $77 million annually to ORC activity.  The WSORCA now boasts 402 registered users from 81 cities in nine states.  Their 1st Annual Training Conference is scheduled for Nov. 2, 2011, in Burien, Washington.  (Source

Big Lots buys Canadian retailer Liquidation World's 90 stores.   Another U.S. retailer expanding northwards.  This makes the U.S. expansion into Canada over 750 stores in the last 12 months alone and Big Lots will certainly expand its market share.  These are historical developments for both countries which drive lots of questions for both retail communities.  Can the Canadian market actually absorb and support all of this growth?  Will there be enough employees, consumers and management teams?  In the desperate move to staff all of these new jobs that are coming, how will it impact salary levels and competency levels?  (Source

Apple has become the fastest growing retailer in the U.S. and, in the first three months of 2011, accounts for one-fifth of all sales growth by publicly-traded retailers in the U.S.  In their brick and mortar stores, sales soared 90%.  And now the executive who engineered their design just joined JC Penney as their CEO.  How will he impact that organization?   Many are saying he redefined the retail box, so how will he redefine JC Penney?  (Source

Nordstrom, the Gap and now Finish Line have started offering to send customers their receipts to their emails.  It's part of a growing effort by retailers to electronically reach out to consumers via their smartphones and computers.  And now some retailers are testing a platform that is both paperless and credit-card-less.    The form of payment, called Card Case, uses mobile-phone and iPad technology. It enables users to pay for products by simply walking up to the cash register and giving their name after registering their card using the Square app.  Their picture shows up on the retailer's iPad, and the customer receives a receipt in the form of a text message. The receipt can be accessed at any time using the app.  Many are saying it will become the standard in 10 years.  (Source

There were 103 million counterfeit goods seized last year in the EU valued at more than $1.4 billion with 85% of the fakes originating in China.  (Source

For the first time ever, a new survey of the UK's top 100 retailers shows that IT investment for m-commerce and e-commerce now tops store systems – a trend that we're sure is also reflective here in North America.  (Source

The Pentagon revealed that, this past March, it suffered one of its largest losses ever of sensitive data in a cyberattack where hackers stole 24,000 files of Pentagon data.  With more than 15,000 computer networks and 7 million computers in dozens of countries, the Defense Department is one of the largest networks in the world.  (Source Associated Press)

In the 1980's, it was common practice when you resigned from a company to make copies of your files and take them with you to a certain extent.  Everyone knew about it and it was almost accepted behavior.  Today, it's quite different and much more serious.  So much more information is available to virtually everyone that, one push of a key, and certainly a well-orchestrated effort can have dramatic consequences and can bring criminal charges.   In today's world, intellectual property is a critical asset to every organization and it's the responsibility of every executive to safeguard and maintain their company's intellectual property integrity.  Every organization, regardless of size, can be impacted and quite frankly most have been.
