Homeland Security Department says there's a constant threat of malware on imported electronic devices sold in the U.S. and says it's one of the most complicated and difficult challenges they have.  Information Week reports DHS and DoD are working with the private sector to improve monitoring of the electronics supply chain – basically indicating that the malware is already on the device when you buy it brand new!  (Source federalnewsradio.com)  (Source infromationweek.com)

The housing market is continuing to have a severe impact on corporate relocations with homes now 30% to 40% down from 5 years ago and quite frankly no end in sight of the continuing decline.  The current Congressional budget crisis may even add fuel to the decline even further.  The one article earlier this year by one economist stated it would be 2018 before homes come back to even modest values.  But this writer feels it may be well after that now.

ORC ring of three busted for the second time in two months by Boise Police Organized Retail Crime Unit , the second one for them in the past week.  Curt Crum of the ORC Unit said people who run the shoplifting rings direct thieves in the field to steal certain brands or items they know they can sell or "customers" want.  Another trend investigators are seeing is that high-end clothes stolen from U.S. stores are being smuggled into Mexico, where they can be sold for higher prices.   (Source idahostatesman.com)

China's 9-month crackdown on intellectual property violations has led to $2 billion in counterfeit goods being seized and resolved and has resulted in 9.031 arrests – the largest campaign in China's history.  (Source infoworld.com)

With online sales continuing to chip away at brick and mortar stores sales, in the UK alone, a nation of 60 million, they expect 1.5 million people, or 2.5% of their entire population, to be working in the e-commerce industry by 2015 alone.  Those employees and sales impacts the brick and mortars.  This fast growth necessitates everyone's attention and response.  Couple that with mobile and tablet technology introduced in the brick and mortar world and what you have is rapidly changing retail environment.  How are you embracing this change?  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

Consumer devices, such as iPads and iPhones are being used by more and more workers within their organizations, but many companies are just overwhelmed by the need to mitigate risk and support the devices.  While many were unprepared last year, a new survey shows this "consumerization gap" is widening and it's unstoppable and inevitable.  (Source csoonline.com)

Flash Mob of teens robs a BP store last week in Milwaukee while two held the door open for others to rush in and help themselves.  And last week Police in Cleveland, Ohio, actually closed a park in an attempt to prevent a flash mob from forming.  (Source flashmobnews.com)

Skimmer to spend 4 years and 9 months in prison for talking a hostess in a St. Louis restaurant into using an electronic skimmer to collect credit card information and then used the credit card numbers at various stores in Missouri and Illinois.  (Source ksdk.com)

According to a new report we're seeing the fourth generation of cyber criminals now who have sophisticated to a level that now openly sells their trade and software without criminal or civil ramifications.  This report of the evolution of cyber criminals is extremely interesting.  (Source idgenterprise.com)

eBay Asset Protection Locates Missing Man & Discovers Laptop Fraud

eBay Asset Protection investigators were asked for assistance in locating a suspected lost and possible emotionally disturbed male and stumbled upon a fraud case involving nonexistent laptops costing community users approx. $35K in financial loss. The suspect left his home unannounced and without his medication and his family became very concerned and contacted law enforcement for assistance, who then contacted eBay investigators as the suspect was known to use eBay & PayPal and wanted to review recent activity in an effort to locate him. The investigators quickly realized the man had been involved in a fraudulent scam. The suspect was located, arrested, convicted and sentenced to 12 months in jail. Judge John Gosling said: "this is calculated dishonesty and in only a month you cheated innocent customers out of £22,799." (Click here for full article)

"Need vs. Want"

At times while I'm driving down the road, I try to keep myself entertained by listening to good music, something inspirational, and at times comedy. I find that laughing is one of the best ways to reduce stress. After a particularly stressful day on my way home, I turned the radio station to a comedy channel and remember laughing uncontrollably while the drivers next to me looked over as if I were half crazy. The comedian was speaking about "Need vs. Want." Sometimes the things that are the truest in life become the funniest. The discussion was centered on children today and how they always feel like they "need" something and do not understand the difference between need and want.

In my current role, I find this to be equally true in regards to expenses. If you have ever managed a budget, then you can understand what I mean. Budgets really outline what we expect to spend based on experience from prior years and anticipated purchases or expenses that may arise in the coming year. Once this has been established, it is imperative to monitor expenses to ensure your company can maintain profitability. When times get tough, we all need to look deep into our budgets and determine some of these "need vs. wants" that allow us to get the job done and adjust accordingly.

I sometimes have similar uncontrolled laughs that I try to internalize when I get requests for "wants" throughout the year which remind me of the comedian's dialogue. I have found that the best way to control these random wants is to eliminate them through a stronger awareness campaign with the team on the difference between the two. Providing them visibility to the budget, current expenses, and consistent communication has allowed them to see for themselves where we stand in regards to available funds. It has essentially eliminated the random requests for a new "this" or "that" and placed them in a position of making the decision themselves based on the data. It also provides them with the ability to make a stronger business case for those "needs" when they can see that the funds are in fact available and, at times, maybe even a want or two. Allowing them the tools to make the business case helps you in supporting it up the chain should it be necessary and gives you ground to stand on if you have to deny the "want." Transparency is clarity.

For 8 years in the oval office, Ronald Reagan kept a small plaque on his desk that read "There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit."   The inherent, simple truth of this philosophy is indisputable. The real question is, does the man (or woman) have the courage and the character to lead by it?
