JC Penney cuts 350 more corporate jobs. The cuts will contribute to its previously announced plan to reduce costs by $900 million a year by the end of 2012. The Plano, Texas-based retailer said in April it would lay off 600 workers at its headquarters. As of January 28, the company had 159,000 employees. Penney's same-store sales fell 18.9 percent in its first quarter, when it also had an unexpected net loss. In a company presentation in January, Penney said that in 2010, selling, general, and administrative expenses were equal to 31 percent of revenue, compared with 21 percent at rival Kohl's Corp. More cuts may be in store here long term. (Source wtag.com)

The Retail Store in 2020 - "There's a shift away from buying a product to buying an experience, or personal betterment and fulfillment
." "The Apple Store concept is changing the landscape of how we shop," says Kevin Horn, vice president at RTKL, a Baltimore-based global design firm. "There's no central cash register, and a sales associate can ring you up while you're looking at a product, which makes it a much more engaged experience." As online purchasing becomes more popular, bricks-and-mortar stores will need to focus more on the experiential rather than the transactional. Will JC Penney lead the way here with Apple's former designer running the show? We'll all find out soon enough. (Source entreprenuer.com)

Gangbangers are trading in their guns and masks for laptops and card skimmers. Authorities have seen an increase in the number of gangbangers committing identity theft and more Internet-based crimes. Law enforcement agencies across the country have been noticing the trend of street gangs dabbling more and more in identify theft, check fraud and online crimes. According to the National Gang Intelligence Center’s 2011 gang report, many gang members use the Internet to commit identity theft, computer hacking and phishing scheme crimes. For the criminal, the payout can be much bigger at a decreased risk, authorities said. According to BankRate.com, losses from card skimming exceed $1 billion a year worldwide. The exact numbers are difficult to pin down, as many of the incidents are never reported to authorities. (Source vvdaily.com)

Universal Surveillance Systems
Raises Over $40,000 for

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

Rancho Cucamonga, CA –July 10, 2012– Universal Surveillance Systems LLC (USS), the largest privately held supplier of retail loss prevention (LP) technology in the United States, raised over $40,000 for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) through their 4th Annual USS Charity Golf Tournament at the TPC Louisiana Golf Course in Avondale, LA, held in conjunction with the National Retail Federation’s Loss Prevention Conference.

Breaking all previous records for golf participants and funds raised, the event was overwhelmingly supported by the loss prevention community through generous sponsorships, prize donations and golf participation.

"The mission and achievements of NCMEC are immeasurable," said Adel Sayegh, USS President and CEO. "They have been instrumental in the recovery of over 175,200 lost children since their inception in 1984. USS is extremely pleased we were able to raise over $40,000 dollars at our golf event to support their critical mission."

"I believe it is everyone’s duty to give back to their communities and support effective organizations that help others like NCMEC," continued Sayegh. "It is my honor and privilege to hold an event where the loss prevention community can give back as well. I am overwhelmingly thankful to all those who participated in the tournament to help us raise money for this amazing cause."

Susan Culler, Vice President of Development at NCMEC, stated, "On behalf of NCMEC and the families to be served, we are grateful to Universal Surveillance Systems for their continued generosity and support."

USS is an active member of the community and their employees volunteer at local food banks, hospitals and homeless shelters within their local communities. The company also gives back through its USS Foundation that has donated 350 bicycles to needy children in MI and OH in 2011 and plans to donate additional bicycles to students at low-income schools in the American South later this year.

For more information, contact USS at 1-800-488-9097. Or visit the USS website at www.universaleas.com and the USS Foundation website at www.ussfoundation.org. Visit the NCMEC website at www.missingkids.com.

External Theft

Submitted by Mark Duncan
Regional Loss Prevention Manager, Burlington Coat Factory

July 9, 2012

External Theft: Let's not focus on what the potential thief just did, let's focus on what they are going to do more of. Teach, Coach, Train store employees/management to not worry about what they just saw, empower them to release their frustrations in immediately killing that potential thief with kindness, empower store employees to treat the potential thief like royalty. This mental kindness will allow for the potential thief to leave the store without further incident. Communication: Recognize the employee/management for their efforts in only having one or two unpaid for items leave the store unpaid for vs. large potential loss, multiple items, from leaving the store unpaid for. Coach, Teach, Train the importance of employee quick response and empowering employee and management mental kindness against the potential thief and individual units will win.

10 Habits of Remarkably Charismatic People Some people instantly make us feel important. Some people instantly make us feel special. Some people light up a room just by walking in. We can't always define it, but some people have it: They're naturally charismatic. Unfortunately, natural charisma quickly loses its impact.  (What you do)

Climbing the Corporate Ladder When You're Shy and Introverted It's hard enough to find a job when you're shy, but it can seem just as hard to become a team player within a group of strangers you've just met and position yourself to move up into management. Here's how you can overcome being just shy of a promotion.  (Three tips to follow)

When Smart People Get Stupid Have you ever had a really effective, smart employee just fall off? Maybe he started making bad decisions repeatedly or missing commitments, falling short on performance or blowing it in a meeting or sales call? When your "go-to" person becomes less reliable, the whole business starts to suffer.  (Overwhelmed or underwhelmed?)

3 Simple Ways to Make People Happy At Work Most leaders know that, if their workers are happy, they're also more productive. But how to make them happy is the challenge. Many take the goal too personally and try to build staff contentment through personal relationships. So what can you realistically pull off to make people happy at work?  (Manager overboard!)

Tip of the Day - Sponsored by Vector Security

Making judgments on people is a serious thing and has a ripple effect that goes well beyond your immediate group. We all make judgments on every executive we know and it's human nature to be critical. Leave it to say that the best opinion is one of direct first-hand experience and is based on both sides of every story. It's easy to react to the self-serving opinions of others, but the real professional takes the high road and focuses on what's best for their organization, their team, and their industry.

Just a thought,
