Best Buy is betting the bank on their new "Connected Stores" with opening 100 by years end. Scaled-down from 58,000 sq. ft. to 30,000 to 40,000 sq. ft. the new concept offers a "Genius Bar-like tech support center, employees with advice on pricey stoves and rooms where home theater geeks can design their ultimate man caves. Best Buy, which is now testing Connected Stores in the Twin Cities and San Antonio, expects the format not only to retain the shoppers but to attract new customers, especially ones willing to go premium. In doing so, the company can offset some of the lost sales and profits from the traditional big boxes that will close. From their Apple-esque elements to their Magnolia Home Design Center to their Pacific Kitchen & Home section they're trying to trade up in consumers and offer professional advice in every aspect. Will it work? Can they stop showrooming and get that customer to buy in the store? Only time will tell. (Source startribune.com)

California's wage and hour laws leads to $80.7M judgment against ABM Security for denying off duty rest breaks "The security guards were denied off duty rest breaks in violation of California law. ABM previously acknowledged that all of its security guards are required to remain on call during their so-called breaks, which the court found to be illegal. Judge Wiley ruled: "Put simply, if you are on call, you are not on break. That has been the law for many years." California has always led the way in precedent setting labor laws and judgments. And this one, while not appearing to be significant, quite frankly is. (Source privateofficerbreakingnews.com)

Toys R Us Takes Repeat Burglar off the Streets

Submitted by Mark Shoemaker, National Director - Investigations

The Matteson, Illinois Toys R Us was burglarized twice in June 2012. Suspects would enter the front of store with a sledge hammer. These two burglaries netted the suspects over $20,000 in stolen product. After investigating and partnering with other retailers in the area, Toys R Us Investigations Team set up surveillance from a safe distance and on July 1st the Sledge Hammer Burglars returned. However this time, the Investigations team had a great view and was able to dispatch police immediately. The group consisted of 4 individuals. They proceeded to smash security cases and remove merchandise. This team of crooks then used large garbage cans to transport the items out of the store into an awaiting vehicle.

The investigator was able to give law enforcement point by point updates, ultimately informing them of the direction the suspects were traveling. The police were able to locate the vehicle, and attempted to pull it over, however, the suspect fled and a chase ensued. One suspect was later arrested and identified. $1,360 worth of merchandise was recovered in the vehicle. The Police Detectives are currently investigating the identity of the others involved and will be pressing charges for all 3 burglary incidents. All three burglaries occurred at approximately 6:00 am. It was later determined the Matteson Police Department changes shifts and holds "roll-call" at that time. It is believed that the suspects were aware of knew this and targeted this timeframe because it would delay Police response time.

Store Loss Prevention Culture

Submitted by Robert Martin
Corporate Regional Investigator, Bonton Stores Inc.

July 9, 2012

Our industry in Loss Prevention is being pressed more and more to rely on our store personnel to carry out and be mindful of the Loss Prevention effort while maintaining a culture of customer service. Simple answer; combine the two. It's efficient and effective. In house programs that promote Loss Prevention culture and customer service culture into one single effort are as important as any Loss Prevention function. The difficulty is in "buy in" from each store associate and manager. By explaining the benefits of sales and preventing loss leading to increased profits resulting in pay increases, promotional opportunities, merit bonuses and a positive work environment can introduce and instill a customer service/Loss Prevention environment in each individual store. The Key- Continuous reinforcement for a period of at least 13 weeks of consistent behavior to establish the culture. Once a culture has been instilled it will be maintained. It's a win/win for sales and saving. Establish awards on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis for maintaining the culture and your company succeeds! Working together is the key to success.

Retail Industry Leaders Association

RILA and the leadership of the Disaster Recovery & Preparedness Committee (DRAP)
invite you to the annual DRAP meeting to be held at Sears’ headquarters
in Chicago, IL on August 17, 2012.

The full-day meeting will be a unique opportunity for retailers to share leading practices, address common risks and challenges, benchmark policies and practices and network with private sector peers and public sector partners. Presentation topics will touch on areas that impact retailers of all sizes and footprints: global business continuity programs, earthquake and tornado preparation, credentialing, public-private partnerships, information sharing, and more. There will also be a facilitated open forum in which participants can raise unique challenges, share experiences and identify DRAP initiatives that will support retailers in their collective efforts around disaster preparedness and response.

And, we are very excited that senior-level representatives from the state of Illinois and FEMA Region V will present to the group on the role of retailers in their respective short- and long-term strategies.
View the tentative agenda.

The DRAP meeting will coincide with the
Central United States Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC) workshop, to be held August 14-16, also at Sears headquarters. The workshop will focus on developing a public-private sector plan to ensure at-risk states in the New Madrid Seismic Zone are adequately prepared and understand official response actions in the event of a major earthquake. Public sector representatives from the eight CUSEC member states (AL, AR, IL, IN, KY, MS, MO, TN) and the adjoining ten states will be present. Complimentary hotel accommodations are available for this event.

The DRAP meeting and the CUSEC workshop assist retailers in their ongoing commitment to enhance their preparedness and response strategies and to strengthen public-private partnerships. And, both offer ideal venues in which to meet public sector partners face-to-face. We hope you will make every effort to attend these important industry events.

Please send your RSVP to the DRAP Committee meeting to

The Best Strategy for Reducing Stress When you're on vacation, do you find yourself relaxing? Or do you find yourself stressed because you can't get cell service on the beach? What can you do about the stress and frustration that comes from unmet expectations? You have two choices: Either change the reality around you or change your expectations.  (Don't pull a Rob)

How to Gain Control By Letting Go Many leaders are over-controlling, and they need to micromanage. They force their will on others. Over controlling leaders create low morale, poor communication, lack of innovation, and risk aversion. Paradoxically, it is only by relinquishing control that leaders can ever achieve the kind of control that is the mark of great leaders.  (Controllers Anonymous)

3 Neat Tricks For Overcoming Social Anxiety Some of us are born with the gift of gab, and others struggle to get three words out of their mouth at a dinner party. Though it's clear that some of us have a natural inclination to shyness, it's equally obvious that the ability to boldly sell yourself and make social connections generally benefits business people.  (Go buy more socks)

Overcoming Shyness and Social Anxieties You want to stop feeling self-conscious, insecure, and socially inhibited. You want to stop worrying about making social blunders and looking like a jerk at work. Knowing what to do and then doing it can help you to get past trepidations about meeting with your boss, having lunch with coworkers, or going to a networking event.  (How to dial it down)
