Fed's hold panel meeting on fighting the growing counterfeit threat

The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center) and experts from Homeland Security held a panel discussion yesterday in Washington DC to to raise awareness of the growing threat that counterfeit products pose to public health and safety as well as the U.S. economy. The panel also explored ways to enhance government and industry collaboration, including federal legislation.  The protection of intellectual property is a top priority for Homeland Security Investigations, as counterfeit products represent a triple threat by delivering shoddy, often dangerous goods into commerce, by funding organized criminal activities and by denying Americans good-paying jobs," said IPR Center unit chief, William G. Ross. "The IPR Center will continue to work closely with our industry partners in order to raise public awareness of the severe threats from counterfeit goods."  (Source yahoo.com)

Best Buy is shedding space

With 1,300 stores nationwide Best Buy is looking to sublease space to smaller retailers, grocers - beauty supply stores - home furnishing outlets and others to adapt to changing consumer trends with online sales taking a bite out of growth.  One analyst said of the Best Buy's big box stores "It was a killer model in the 1980s and 1990s," he said, "a vast selection of inventory under one roof with low prices. Then, Amazon happened."  With another analyst saying "The old joke is that Best Buy is Amazon's showroom."  Following the path of so many other retailers Best Buy is going small.  (Source departmentstoreretailing.blog.spot.com)

Amazon offers Texas $300 million

The ongoing fight with Texas over collecting sales tax earlier this year resulted in them saying we're pulling out and now Amazon offers to invest $300 million in warehouses and employee 6,000 if Texas will back off and agree not to collect sales tax.  Almost a Mexican stand off especially with last years $269 million tax bill Texas sent them.  On a side note - this is the only company we know of that still offers full relocation packages.  (Source nytimes.com)

Crowd knocks down metal barricades at Justin Bieber's Macy's herald Square event yesterday & throws him a scare

When an unidentified plainclothes cop stepped up to protect Bieber from the unruly crowd, one of the Canadian crooner's bodyguards grabbed him and tried to pull him away only to be cited by police for disorderly conduct.  Looks like everybody overreacted.  But given the history of crowds in NY, how could you blame the overprotective bodyguard.  (Source nydailynews.com)

eBay to Test Storage & Shipping Service

eBay Inc. said it will start testing a merchandise storage-and-shipping service for its sellers later this year, a move that will help the online marketplace standardize delivery times for its merchants. Spokeswoman Johnna Hoff said the company will launch a fulfillment service, as it is known in the parlance of online commerce. "We plan to run the test later this year to help facilitate fulfillment and delivery processes to further improve the shopping and selling experience on eBay," she said. The company in March changed its fee model to encourage its sellers to offer free shipping, a staple for many online retailers such as Amazon.com. eBay also recently completed its acquisition of GSI Commerce, which helps retailers such as Aeropostale, Timberland and Major League Baseball manage their websites and fulfill online orders.  (Click here for full article)

Once or twice each year, many companies bring their Store Managers together for an annual or bi-annual conference. The agendas are packed with hard and soft skills topics that may or may not include your primary area of expertise. Leading a session on Loss Prevention, Safety, or Compliance might be expected and come naturally to you, but imagine the influence you can have if you position yourself as a company leader capable of teaching a session on leadership, diversity, empowerment, fiscal responsibility, or something else -- without ever mentioning "Loss Prevention." Break down stereotypes and demonstrate that you are a multifaceted executive by capitalizing on these types of opportunities to address a large audience of your teammates.
