Apple Inc to give some of their retail workers as much as a 25% raise. The raises come following a review of store operations from earlier this year. The increase is one of the first major initiatives made by Apple's new retail chief. Apple has roughly 36,000 retail employees at it's more than 350 stores worldwide, with two-thirds of those stores being in the U.S. Apple will also be instituting employee discounts for the first time: $500 off a new Mac computer or $250 off an iPad. Layaway is no longer just for TVs and furniture. On Wednesday, Sears unveiled it's new website and service, searsvacations.com, that allows customers to book every part of a vacation, from car rentals to cruises. There are also 100 pre-paid vacation packages offered, some as low as $399. Along with offering all these options, customers also have the choice to put any of the packages on layaway. IKEA plans to invest 1.5 billion euros ($1.9 billion) to open 25 retail stores in India. It comes at a time when foreign corporate confidence in Asia's 3rd largest economy is low, due to slowing growth, new restrictive tax policies and a perception of government paralysis is enacting further reforms. IKEA had reportedly been worried about sourcing norms in India which require foreign retail firms to source at least 30% of their products from local companies. (source channelnewsasia.com)

CarMax Inc. posted a 3.8% decline in profits to $120.7 million in the 1st quarter of fiscal 2013 compared to $125.5 million in the corresponding quarter last year. However, profits were in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate during the quarter. The company’s net sales and operating revenues for the quarter came in at $2.77 billion, up 4% compared with $2.68 billion in the year-ago quarter. CarMax is one of the largest retailers of used vehicles. The company pioneered the used car superstore concept with the inauguration of its first store in 1993. (source townhall.com)

Ritz Camera lands in bankruptcy again. The photography retail chain filed for bankruptcy protection early on Friday, less than three years after it emerged from its first bankruptcy. The company, which was founded in 1918, was bought in a bankruptcy auction in 2009 by a group led by its top executive. Ritz, which operates nearly 300 stores in 34 states, listed assets and liabilities of between $50 million and $100 million. (source chicagotribune.com)

Motorola demonstration shows the company's vision for the future of retail. From a study Motorola conducted in May that polled 250 U.S.-based retail executives, it was found that retailers are finding it hard to meet a customer's "want it here, want it now" mentality. Because of this, Motorola has designed new products to bring companies up to date on technology and allow them to satisfy their customers. Along with the idea to provide Wi-Fi to customers in stores, Motorola's other ideas included items such as the SB1 badge, the MC40, and ET1 Tablet to turn employees from "task workers" to "knowledge workers." An Australian Senator resigns after second shoplifting allegation. Senator Mary Jo Fisher will quit on August 10 to deal with mental health issues after being reported for shoplifting a second time. She has blamed the latest episode on a panic attack similar to the one which caused 'such grief' when she was first charged 18 months ago. "It has become undeniable that for me, the road to full recovery from my depressive illness has been hampered by my trying to get better, at the same time as continuing to serve in public office," she said in a brief statement last night. Police were able to ID suspect break into a locked trailer parked at a hotel and steal 13 bikes, belonging to a racing team, one day before the inaugural Exergy Tour was scheduled to begin. Officers could connect him to dozens of bike thefts in Boise and were about to present their case to prosecutors for an arrest warrant when they got a call early Thursday morning that he was in custody after being caught trying to steal car tires from the Les Schwab store. He is being held in the Ada County Jail on 13 counts of grand theft and one count of burglary. (source idahostatesman.com)

The Key Ingredients of a Successful Team Picture a pay phone. It represents the archetypal machine; it responds predictably. You insert coins and the line comes alive; you add coins and it continues to work. But that doesn't quite work with people, does it? It's hard to understand what drives teams.  (3 ingredients to the secret sauce)

Team Building: Leaders Make It Safe to Collaborate What does it mean to help? Ronald Reagan used to have fun with the statement, "The most dangerous words in the English language are 'I'm with the government and I'm here to help.'" It seldom failed to get a laugh. But in reality the issue of help, or specifically how we help, is no laughing matter.  (Define these)
Surround Yourself with Great People -- Building the Team The downside to moving fast: you make a lot of mistakes. The upside to moving fast: you learn from those mistakes and move on. One of the biggest things you can learn in this process is that you should always surround yourself with great people, no matter what.  (5 things to evaluate)

6 Ways to Lead Your Team to Maximum Productivity  In tough economic times, organizations must focus on getting the highest possible return on their workforce investment. To achieve that goal, it's more important than ever for supervisors to motivate employees, challenge them to peak efficiency and create an environment that helps them grow.  (growth-oriented)

Tip of the Day - Sponsored by Vector Security

Loyalty is one of the most precious values there is and a loyal team that's unified in its goals and objectives, even in defeat, is strong and supportive. Loyal teams can make the largest tasks seem effortless and they create a sense of ownership of family that inspires individual performance and comforts individual failure. Earned slowly and grown daily, loyalty is a commodity no leader can be without because it fuels success, unifies purpose, and gives birth to exceptional performance. Without loyalty, teams splinter and lose focus on the true objectives. It's rare to build a truly loyal team and it's incredibly difficult to keep them together long term with private agendas always pressuring the balance. And yes, even loyal teams require balancing because at the end of the day it's always about personal agendas. Professional sports teams are constantly looking for that balance and the right players to fit as a team and the same holds true in business. With the right team, anything is possible and conversely one team member can destroy the entire balance. So being a team player is important even when you decide not to be.

Just a thought,
Gus Downing
