"Showrooming" is more about finding more info than it is about finding the best price At least according to one VP from Forrester Research who spoke recently at the 2012 Internet Retailer Conference. "Showrooming is about product information and social validation when a shopper is buying a product," Walker said. "I may want to make sure I’m getting a decent deal, but very few customers are constantly checking prices. You may be spending loads of time and money training sales associates, but the customer knows they have a better tool in their smartphone. The retail store experience is changing faster than it has changed in a very long time." (Source internetretailer.com)

133-mile chain of levees, flood walls, gates and the biggest pumping station on the planet now defend New Orleans from another Katrina. It took seven years to build and $14.5B worth of civil works but there's finally a wall around the city. No other American city has anything like it. "This is the best system the greater New Orleans area has ever had." Katrina is generally considered to have been a 400-year storm, and rising seas and more numerous hurricanes predicted in many climate-change models suggest harsher conditions to come. Ignore Your Performance Goals, Increase Your Performance There's a big problem with performance goals, one that leaders rarely recognize. When leaders pay so much attention to performance goals, they often lose sight of other equally or even more important goals, like your own ultimate goals as a leader.  (Don't forget the company's "big picture" goals)

Set A, B & C Goals Despite the previous post, it is important for you to have personal goals. Set A, B, and C goals for yourself, and have your boss buy in to the plan. With a set of A, B, and C goals, you're distinguishing between bare-minimum expectations and stretch goals.  (Hit your "awesome" goals)

Why Learning Not to Compete Can Help You Win Most of us have grown up in a competitive society. We compete with our siblings, with other kids, and with fellow students. This sense of competition then carries over into our work like, where we try to outperform our colleagues.  ("winning" no longer applies)

6 Exercises to Strengthen Compassionate Leadership When you use compassionate communication in your conversations, something quite surprising occurs: both your brain and the brain of the person you're talking to begin to align themselves with each other. This special bond is a phenomenon referred to as "neutral resonance."  (eliminate defensiveness)

Tip of the Day - Sponsored by Vector Security

Social media can be a fantastic platform for every company and executive, but it can also be a nightmare. Mixing personal with professional oftentimes sends the wrong messages and can absolutely destroy the image a professional needs to maintain in the public arena. Maintaining boundaries and separating the two can oftentimes be difficult to accomplish as corporate America searches for every piece of information they can find on executives and companies. And regardless of what anyone says, your professional image should always take precedence over your personal image in the social media world.

Just a thought,
Gus Downing
