Wal-Mart's external lawyers have flagged Brazil, China, India, and South Africa as countries that represent the highest corruption risk in a global review. The lawyers said they were retained to review Wal-Mart policies in Mexico, Brazil and China, and later recommended the company also evaluate its operations in India and South Africa. IBM and New York University Stern School of Business release a joint project white paper on "Retail 2020: Reinventing retailing- once again". "Today we are in the midst of the most profound change that the retail industry has ever gone through. We are seeing significant changes in the way consumers shop, where they shop and when they shop. These changes will, once again, change the retailing landscape, as consumers shift to those retailers that evolve while others are forced to liquidate. This paper offers a glimpse into what retailing will look like in 2020 and outlines the implications for retailers today." A white paper worth reading for the serious retail executive. NSC also noted that unintentional injuries and deaths in the United States remain at "unacceptable levels" – an estimated 126,100 unintentional deaths occurred in 2010, compared with approximately 122,700 the previous year. Furthermore, the cost of unintentional injuries to Americans and their employers exceeds $730 billion nationally, or $6,200 per household, and causes great suffering for individuals and their families. Video: Counterfeit goods are costing CA billions of dollar each yearCalifornia creates the "Central Intelligence Partnership" to counter the estimated $8 billion a year the state loses because of counterfeit merchandise, officials say The goal is to dismantle the criminal organizations and individuals who smuggle counterfeit goods into the state. During the past three years, the LA County Sheriff's Department's counterfeit unit has served 100 search warrants, arrested 200 suspects, and seized more than $300 million in products, officials said. With state budgets tightening all over the country you might start seeing an increased push on counterfeiting similar to the increased push on ORC as tax revenue is becoming more important in every state. There is a huge shortage of cyber security executives in the U.S. - "shortages in the 20,000s to 40,000s for years to come" "We don't have enough security professionals and that's a big issue. What I would tell you is it's going to be a bigger issue from a national security perspective than people realize," said Symantec Corp.'s Chief Executive Enrique Salem recently to Reuters. The NSA is actually working with universities to set up new cyber-ops programs to expand U.S. cyber expertise needed for secret intelligence operations. And in the UK the same problem exists. High Risk locations, defined as stores with two or more robberies or other violent crimes within a year, would be asked to comply with a series of "best practice" safety measures that convenience stores voluntarily adopt to protect their workers. The long list of recommendations run from low-cost items like improved lighting to high-cost items like bullet-proof enclosures that can cost up to $45,000. (source newsandtribune.com)

eBay Announces Warren Buffet Charity Auction Sets Another Record @ $3.5M

eBay leadership announces recording setting charity auction to dine with Warren Buffet sets record for annual event. It was reported that a deep-pocketed anonymous bidder forked over nearly $3.5 million in a Glide Foundation Charity Auction to dine with the billionaire. The charity event set a record for the Glide Foundation, which helps the homeless, located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. Glide’s Reverend Cecil Williams had an enthusiastic reaction to the bid. "We were at a point around $1.2 million last night and we were thinking it wasn’t going to work like it did last year," he said, referring to last year’s previous record setting auction of $2 million. Things didn’t look promising just moments before the close of bidding, until with only seconds left the donor called with the bid to save the day. The event has brought in more than $14.6 million in the past 13 years for Glide, which serves meals to the needy and runs a church in San Francisco’s blighted Tenderloin district. Last year’s record take was $2.63 million. "You change lives," said Buffett, 81, addressing Glide workers, volunteers and donors in a video played at the gathering before the bidding ended. "I congratulate you." Click here for full article.

Bombarded With Offers

With the annual NRF Conference a week away it’s a good time to consider how your time will best be spent. There’s value in the educational component, the trade-show component, and the social gatherings. Some will try to influence the time you spend with them with drawings, contests, and free give-aways. Be cautious my friends. If your company is paying the expenses for your attendance you are expected to act in their best interest. There is a difference between dropping your business card in a fish bowl for a random drawing and receiving monetary compensation from a vendor for your time. If you go or stay for the give-away what you’ve lost is far more valuable.
