Tune in to CNBC tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 9p, 10p, 12a or 1a ET to watch Crime Inc: Stolen Goods.  The show is about thieves breaking into everything and cashing in on a fortune. No one is safe, these modern day pirates steal from stores, semis, warehouses, even our very own homes. The industry of stolen goods is a complex web of stealing, buying, and selling -- placing the items on the Internet, in flea markets, and even back on the shelves of legitimate stores. Crime Inc. investigates what law enforcement, corporations and even a burglary victim are doing to strike back and protect their assets.  Special thanks to Jerry Biggs (Walgreens), Special Agent Eric Ives (FBI) and other members of the Joint Organized Retail Crime Task Force (JORCTF) members for their support and video.  (Source westorlandonews/com) (Source orlandosentinel.com)

Norfolk County Massachusetts public officials, including the District Attorney, local police chiefs and local Mayors are conducting seminars for merchants and store loss prevention personnel to better coordinate and educate retailers on Massachusetts Rules of Evidence in order to combat the ORC activity they see from as far away as New York City.  (Source wickedlocal.com)

Prada, with a third of their 326 stores in Asia-Pacific, plans on opening 80 stores, mostly in the Asia-Pacific region if their upcoming IPO goes well.  The focus for high-end retailers may be shifting to the Asian rim.  (Source retailingtoday.com)

With counterfeit websites attracting over 120 million visits a year and generating over $132 billion in sales, Brand-i has launched a new website in the UK that allows the consumer to search through their favorite well-known brands and find the genuine goods.  Andy Foster, Operations Director for the Trading Standards Institute and a partner of Brand-i, said, "Because the internet is largely unpoliced, it is becoming increasingly difficult to track."  He continued, "Brand-i offers a way for consumers to wade through the hundreds of counterfeit stores that appear in search engine results or on social media pages. It's an important additional tool in fighting internet crime, but also empowering consumers -- not just with the directory listings, but advice on how to recognize illegal web stores. There is also a facility for consumers to report sites they have been ripped off by or what they suspect aren't genuine." (Source theretailbulletin.com)

New York State Police raid and shut down B&V Discount Store in Fulton, NY for selling and actually making counterfeit merchandise.  Seems like every week somewhere in the nation, police are shutting down small retail stores for selling counterfeit goods.  (Source cnycentral.com)

The UK music retailer HMV, which many feared would not secure new financing, did in fact secure it and will remain as a viable business, at least for the time being.  They've eliminated the LP role in Canada with most thinking those stores may, in fact, be questionable.  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

Small ORC gang of 4 from New York City apprehended at Willow Grove Mall in Montgomery County, PA for forgery and identity theft after opening new fraudulent credit card accounts with fake identification and making purchases at Sears and Macy's.  (Source montgomerynews.com)

A 31-year-old Olympia, WA man sentenced to 15 years in prison for three counts of first-degree and 82 counts of second-degree identity theft.  With over 1,000 victims, police found 40 boxes of evidence, seizing drivers' licenses, credit cards, card swipers and social security cards.  Making illegal online purchases and emptying bank accounts, Anthony Vaughn became Olympia's biggest identity thief in history.  (Source theolympian.com)

A California bill aimed at tightening privacy rules on social media sites failed after heavy lobbying.  The bill would have required users to set privacy settings while registering and, by default, a person's name and city of residence would have been the only content shared without permission.  The bill also imposed fines on websites that took more than 96 hours to comply with a user's request to remove personal information.  The social media groups fought hard against it and won, however, this issue won't go away.  (Source brisbanetimes.com)

One vendor working for a well-known coffee chain recently designed a plexiglass tip box. at their request, after the tip box fell victim to grab and runs.  After securing it under the counter with a chain, the employees simply removed the bottom and next time the Perp hit the money spilled out while he made his getaway with an empty no-bottom plexiglass tip box.  Thanks Hedgie Bartol at Milestone Systems for the story.

The Retail Council Of Canada's Safety Group, led by Matthew Hall, believes it's time to challenge the entire industry to set the goal of becoming the safest industry.  Over the last five-plus years, their program has not only decreased workplace injuries and lost time for retail employees, but it has also returned more than $6 million in rebates to participating members since the launch of their program in 2006.  They offer a number of services to members including RCC's Health and Safety Posters and Safe Series - Provincial Health and Safety Guidelines - and in partnership with Workplace Safety & Prevention Services just released Retail Health and Safety Self Assessment Guides.  (Source Canadian Retailer)

Professionalism or the lack thereof is a reflection of a person's inner self.  How an executive presents themselves and talks about their former jobs, bosses and colleagues is a real indication of how they'll talk tomorrow about who they're working with today.  And while it's human nature to be interested in the gossip, it's usually the wolf in sheep's clothing and the one who has the need to rationalize that has the most to say.

Just a thought
