Its new owner is now clashing with the Canadian division, saying it should no longer have the rights to use the Blockbuster name.  (Source:

The latest figures showed a slump in the volume of sales of 3.9 % in April compared to the same month last year. The figures showed that core retail sales, excluding cars and pubs, has fallen for 40 straight months. The latest CSO's Retail Sales figures show the enormity of the challenges facing Irish retailers and support the calls for reform of commercial rents and wage setting mechanisms. Paul Jones, Head of Global Asset Protection, eBay

eBay Committed to doing it the right way

While beginning a new job is always a challenge, this writer doesn't know many who have walked into the stormy conditions that Paul Jones walked into when he joined eBay two years ago as the company's first retail and Global Asset Protection executive.  With retail trade associations, many of the largest retailers, and a number of state and federal legislators clambering at eBay's doors, a small staff and no dedicated LP model to follow, Paul's initial task was ominous.

To say that a disconnect existed between the retailers and eBay is to put it mildly.  eBay didn't fully understand how retail LP professionals looked at the world, and many retail LP executives were mistrustful of eBay.  So the obvious first task for Paul was to educate and gain the support of the eBay leadership and develop eBay's LP culture. eBay clearly saw the wisdom of doing the right things and, equally important, the company leaders were committed to being good retail business partners for the right reasons.  However, until Paul's hiring, the company largely lacked in-house subject matter expertise to develop the approach to asset protection that met the needs of both the retail industry and the eBay marketplace and its sellers.

Looking for a reset button, Paul came to the LP community with the objective of bridging the communication gap and opening eBay's doors.  Paul invited LP executives from around the nation to work collaboratively together and develop individualized programs, filters, and safeguards designed to aid LP practitioners.  All the while, eBay leadership gave its total support to Paul's team to make the necessary changes to the marketplace.

Initially Paul found eBay's Asset Protection efforts scattered throughout the organization. eBay's nascent PROACT team had only two members.  Over the last two years, the company has built a team of over 50 executives, added three additional members to the PROACT team, and enlisted literally hundreds of other eBay associates to get involved in various pieces of the overall Asset Protection effort.  After making a significant investment, eBay rolled out best in class automated tools, a Law Enforcement eRequest System (LERS), and a Law Enforcement Portal (LEP) platforms that give law enforcement worldwide direct access to aid their investigative efforts on users. eBay also enhanced its relationship with Leads Online, a worldwide 24/7 law enforcement portal that provides law enforcement real time valuable information on stolen goods. eBay has always been recognized as an industry leader with engaging in global law enforcement agencies.

Over the last two years eBay has developed, rolled out, and continued to evolve robust exception reporting systems that are supported by a strong group of analyst and risk management executives.  As one of the only online ecommerce sites to allow open access to its application programming interface (API), which permits third-party investigative software programs to interact,  eBay is leading the way in conflict resolution and open innovation.

eBay has come a long way in two short years and Paul attributes this success to three primary groups: the eBay organization as a whole for its willingness and receptiveness to work with the retail community; the LP executives for their patience, support, involvement and dedicated resources; and to the eBay Asset Protection team for the commitment and efforts it has made under intensive industry scrutiny.

As Paul points out this is a dynamic evolving process that will continue to grow because eBay has over 95.9 million users and operates in 35 countries. In this multi-channel world the key is anticipating the speed of change, working together as an industry, redefining the term collaboration, sharing ideas, and finding new ways of solving issues.

The fast progress of eBay's Asset Protection is no more apparent than in eBay's new partnership with the National Retail Federation.  Joe LaRocca, the NRF's Senior Asset Protection Advisor and one of the nation's leading experts in ORC, said,

"eBay is making big strides and a big difference.

When Paul joined Stoney Burke (a talented cyber investigator) at eBay, he committed to a new way of doing business with retailers. Months later he delivered on those commitments and last year NRF and eBay formed a partnership to tackle the growing problem of organized retail crime (ORC), provide greater intelligence sharing and support the investigative efforts of federal, state and local law enforcement working in partnership with LP professionals. Today we have an open line of communication to eBay's investigation's team and the feedback from our retail members has been complimentary."

Flexibility and molding to the environment you're in is the first step towards integration and inclusion.  In order to be absolutely effective, an executive must first become one with their surroundings and mold to what it is as opposed to expecting them to mold to you.  Seeing and hearing those subtle differences is the key and changing to it becomes the objective.  Once modified, you then have the freedom to influence change and make a difference.

Good Luck
