Wal-Mart is in a battle with a former computer-security specialist who worked on their Threat Research and Analyst team and was fired in 2007 for monitoring phone conversations between a reporter and Wal-Mart employees and for intercepting pager communications.  He also later told the Wall Street Journal how Wal-Mart snooped on employees, critics, and stockholders and shared information on a huge sex discrimination suit he overheard on a surveillance system of the Board's plan to possibly settle.  Wal-Mart believes he has more confidential information and the court has ordered him to turn over two hard drives believed to have confidential information.  Every retailer has to be very careful if a computer security expert goes rogue.  (Source

With Microsoft and Google rushing to own the cloud and every company looking to utilize it because of the savings, the Chief Privacy Officer for Nationwide Insurance Companies says he sees organizations rushing to the cloud for cost and service efficiencies, but he doesn't see service providers rushing to ensure adequate levels of security. "There's still a huge gap between what cloud providers are willing to contractually stand behind from a liability perspective and what their regulated customers are demanding of them."  This is a whole new frontier and until liability issues are defined, it offers a significant risk factor.  Tread softly thru the cloud -- it may be turbulent.  (Source

Gift cards have become the preferred method for paying couriers who transport illicit drugs across the U.S. according to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent John Tobon.  With pre-paid cards legally exempt from crossing border declarations and no financial footprints, they're great for the drug dealers. In one case alone, Virtual Money Inc. located in Dallas provided the cards for crews moving $7 million to Medellin.  (Source

from Scarsdale Security

Retail Security Experts

the future of Loss Prevention is here today --

                                                             with remote video services

Scarsdale Security introduces Virtual LP services to its premier retail clients to give you, your employees, and your customers better security and increased confidence knowing that someone is watching or easily available to help

This enhanced service uses (mostly) existing alarm, network, communication and video systems to give you many of the services of an onsite guard, without the same expense.  Virtual LP is crafted to meet your specific needs, but can include:

Virtual LP Strolling (with Audio)

Confirm your business is safe. With Virtual LP we visually inspect and audibly verify (a stroll through the location) to confirm all your locations are secure. We check critical assets, inventory, perimeter doors, safes, cash wraps, and other areas of risk, and notify customers and employees they are being monitored for their safety.

Virtual LP
Covert Strolling (with no Audio)

Ensure policy compliance. With Virtual LP we quietly remotely view and listen to activities at your locations. We monitor for employee compliance, check for the presence of unauthorized people and complete audit reports for specific loss-prevention and operational issues.

Virtual LP
Interactive Response (Handset or Security Request Button)

Give your employees peace of mind. When an employee uses a handset or security request button, we quickly monitor Virtual LP cameras and microphones. We speak with the employee and step in as necessary. Employees can easily request assistance to monitor a suspected shoplifter or provide a public address security announcement.

Virtual LP
Valet Service - (Escorts at Opening and/or Closing)

Security is right over your shoulder. Simply call us and we will activate the Virtual LP cameras, scan the area and deliver an audible warning that security is monitoring the security of you or your employees and customers.

Virtual LP
Vendor Entry Management

For the safety of after-hours staff and your inventory, Virtual LP can monitor the activities to verify that delivery drivers and cleaning crews are safe from intruders, and encourage honesty when they know others are watching. Virtual LP can either monitor your vendors for the duration of their visit or document the times of their entry and exit.

Virtual LP
Burglar Alarm Verification

We link Burglar Alarm Monitoring with visual confirmation of what is happening at your location. When an alarm signal is received, we review transmitted images and look in to see what is happening. When we confirm an alarm, the police are notified immediately. If nothing is happening, we reconfirm later to see if things have changed.  This reduces false notifications and can help with faster police response when intruders are known to be on site.

If there is a burglary, we notify the police while at the same time discouraging the intruders with audio "This is security. The Police have been notified and we have you on video. Put down the merchandise, leave now."

Virtual LP Back Door Supervision

To help combat shrink, with Virtual LP we confirm that your back doors are only opened for approved deliveries and trash removal. When a back door signal is received, we review stored and live images to verify that backdoor policies are being followed, and confirm the door is again securely closed. If we observe an employee carrying fully loaded boxes to the dumpster, Virtual LP documents the event and alerts your emergency contact. If an unauthorized person is found to be loitering in or around your location, we will advise the individual of security’s presence and instruct them to leave the area.

Virtual LP CashBuddySM

Monitor cash drops and after hours cash reconciliation with Virtual LP to record and document activities.  We can help ensure policy compliance and monitor cash transfer to courier services.

You can never judge a book by its cover and that expression rang clear the other night when a small group learned that one of the industry leaders actually bought two Chihuahuas with his ex-partner and had the courage to name the male -- Brutus.  Talk about wishing it was a German Shepherd.  And now a small group of LP execs are waiting to see if we mention it here on the Daily.  Well, we'll take any guesses as long as you don't work in Chicago at a company that ...
