News Brief - Sponsored by WG Security Products

Mark Stinde, Vice President Asset Protection for 7-Eleven, North America, has been selected to participate in the United States Military Academy at West Point's Executive Leadership Program. The company itself is having a banner year with record breaking new store openings of over 630 this year alone. The Asset Protection department as well, under Mark's leadership, has added 15 jobs this year and is on track to reach record breaking goals. Since 2003, 7-Eleven has almost doubled its global store count, going from 25,000 to more than 46,000. Today, a new 7-Eleven store opens somewhere in the world approximately every two hours, according to a company release.

U.S. lawmakers investigating Wal-Mart for alleged bribery in Mexico are frustrated by the lack of cooperation they have received from the company, a committee staffer familiar with the investigation said. Attorneys for Wal-Mart briefed the committee earlier on Monday about the company's anti-corruption compliance program, the person said. But Wal-Mart has not committed to briefing the panel on the substantive allegations raised by a New York Times report, a key request of the committee, said the staffer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Target managers had intimidated workers and violated federal labor laws in last summer's unsuccessful union election - a federal judge rules. So a judge sets aside the vote of last June and orders a new vote by employees in Valley Stream, NY. Last year workers voted 137 to 85 against joining the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in the election, which sought to make the Valley Stream store the first unionized Target in the nation. Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, said, "Target is disappointed in the N.L.R.B. judge’s ruling, and we respectfully disagree with the judge’s decision." (Source

"If retailers aren't experimenting, then they are doomed to fail," said Wendy Liebmann, CEO of WSL Strategic Retail. Retailers are trying everything they can to keep customers coming back and not just let them sit online and spend-spend-spend. From PetSmart's pet hotels to Macy's "virtual concierge" all of them are trying new things. (Source

Who dropped the dime on Yahoo's CEO and did the background check to find out he didn't have that second degree? While there's been no talk about it in the news it's rather obvious the leader of the hedge fund who just got three seats on the board is the one who found the information and then went public with it. Board room politics is just like anything else when it comes to money. And yesterday the board sold the majority of their holdings in China's Alibaba and made $7.1B. Awfully big move within a week of ejecting the CEO. (Source

Francesca's Holdings, a retailer of women's clothing and accessories, let their CFO go because he "had "improperly" communicated via social media. Probably his "Tweeting" The communications in question may have pertained to Morphis’ Twitter account. On March 7, for example, five days before the company released earnings, Morphis tweeted: "Board meeting. Good numbers = Happy Board." (Source

Westfield signs deal with Port Authority of NY and NJ for new mall at World Trade Center - Opening March 2015 352,000 sq feet of shopping would be spread over three above-ground levels and two below ground. Westfield is also entitled to operate another 90,000 sq feet of retail space among the 8.8 million sq feet of office space under construction. The stores will cater not only to the people who will live and work at the World Trade Center, but also to the masses of tourists who visit the National September 11 Memorial Park and Museum, as well as the proposed performing arts center. The cost of this redevelopment has soared to $14.8B. (Source

The FBI admits it is falling behind on cybersecurity - the flood of cyber criminals. FBI cybersecurity leader Steve Chabinsky has some ideas. "What it ultimately is about is deterrence, if the bad guys know that you can catch them, it stops most of them." According to Chabinsky, support needs to be gathered among organizations, businesses and government who need to come together as a consortium to address these issues and improve critical infrastructure security, while at the same time encouraging innovation. With last year's riots in the UK they won't be understaffed at the Olympics - they'll have 12,500 police + 10,500 army personnel guarding the events. Planning was reviewed after Britain was stunned by violence last August that left five people dead and a trail of looted stores, torched cars and burned-out buildings in London and a few other cities. Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Chris Allison, who is coordinating Olympic policing, insisted Monday that lessons had been learned from the unexpected rioting. (Source Associated Press)

Smaller number of protestors come out for the last day of NATO meetings and all was relatively quiet Commuters who did brave their daily trip were finding something unusual: an abundance of seats on trains and buses, a sign that many workers heeded warnings to avoid going to the office. Houston Family Dollar robbery turns shoot out when customer with permit to carry pulls his gun and gets into a gunfight leaving the assistant manager dead Detectives say two masked men ran inside with guns drawn, demanding cash. One of two customers inside tried to leave but noticed the robbers had locked the door. That customer, who has a concealed handgun license, pulled out his weapon and got into a gunfight with the robbers. Police are still looking for the robbers and their getaway car. (Source

video3 day ORC operation in New Mexico's biggest mall "Coronado Crackdown" busted 38 with LP officers from Gap and Victoria's Secret joining 15 Albuquerque police detectives. Nine of the nation’s best loss-prevention officers were flown into Albuquerque last week to work with Albuquerque Police Department detectives and security officers at Coronado Mall to bring down some of the city’s most active retail thieves, according to an APD news release. The three-day operation, which ended late Friday, resulted in 38 arrests, including that of 38-year-old Manuel Leyba, who allegedly stole more than $12,000 worth of property from Coronado Mall retailers in the five days leading up to the operation, the release said. Some of the suspected thieves were observed stealing from as many as seven stores before they were taken into custody. (Source (Source

How to Motivate Employees? The Best Answer Ever No company is better than it's employees, which is why engaging and motivating employees is so important. Too bad it's rarely done well. Effective motivation comes down to one surprising word - which might be why so many leaders fail to do it right.  (Do you know what it is?)

'Crazy' Ideas for Your Workplace Nothing stifles creativity more than a drab, boring, old-school office. Those clichéd "motivational" posters on your wall are doing quite the opposite. Most likely, they are only motivating your employees to smash them to pieces. (Go from ho-hum to hey-ya!)

9 Things Employees Want from Their Managers (And 5 Things They Don't) Inspiring leader. Quiet problem solver. Compassionate mentor. Different employees crave different things from their managers. Unless you're a mind reader, it's impossible to know exactly what they want.  (You may be surprised)

Why Read Tea Leaves When You Can Promote Talent? Screening resumes is a lot like "reading tea leaves." The outcome is murky and the dregs often leave a bitter taste in your mouth. Sometimes, the perfect personnel solutions are often just across from you at the table.  (Don't let an alluring resume get you)

Share your thoughts.

Tip of the Day - Sponsored by Vector Security

The "power of the pen" is a phrase carried down thru generations and rightfully so. The ability to write your thoughts, to express your beliefs, your opinions is incredibly important and can have a significant impact on your career. Developing the ability to communicate in written form can make the difference in how far an executive goes and it also gives one the ability to go as far as they want as long as they're willing to risk it and put it out there so to speak. I've always tried to write as if one person is sitting in front of me and I'm just trying to communicate to that person. While many are reluctant to write, the one thing you merely need to keep in mind is write as if you're speaking to merely one person and don't hold back. Our Thought Challenge column was developed to offer everyone that opportunity. To be able to share a thought an opinion or an idea with your colleagues and last year we added the Awards program as a way to hopefully inspire thought and motivate people to share. Our Awards Committee is comprised of some of the best leaders in the industry and they're excited about this program and look forward to reading your Thought Challenges. Who knows what ideas may come out. My only suggestion is take the risk - stir the pot - and share your thoughts!

Write your Thought Challenge and see what happens!
