Six people charged with running a pair of Seattle-area shoplifting rings with as many as 25 full-time thieves that stole around $6 million in merchandise and resold it elsewhere.  Hitting Safeway, Fred Meyer, QFC, Target and Albertsons, they sold their hot merchandise to smaller stores throughout the King Count area.  The two ringleaders each face 47 to 63 months in prison if convicted.  In this same article, a second unrelated case of four people who ran GMS Market in Seattle were also charged with paying thieves to shoplift goods to resell in their store and online.  (Source reuters.com)

Blockbuster Canada is being sold to basically help with the Blockbuster U.S.'s debt.  The studios forced it into bankruptcy because the U.S. had used the Canadian stores $117 million in assets and $15 million in cash to secure the studio's $70 million bill.  Just days before the announcement, Blockbuster Canada's CEO, CFO, and controller resigned because the U.S. had let their liability insurance lapse.  With Grant Thornton auditing their books right now, it'll be interesting to see the results.  With 400 stores, 4,000 employees and Netflix just entering the market, their fate may be the same as their U.S. counterparts.  With fewer stores, new ownership, and a totally new look.  The 28-day new release revenue driving advantage they've managed to maintain throughout it all will be the key to their survival.  If that's lost, they may be as well.  (Source ctv.ca)

With $4,406 in sales per square foot and named by Advertising Age "Marketer of the Decade," Apple Stores today celebrates its 10th anniversary.   Growing faster than any other retailer in history and with a 90% increase in sales last quarter, Apple Stores defied all the experts when nobody believed a computer maker would make a good computer retailer.  Consumers are getting married in the stores, one has written a novel in one, and some stay for hours using emails.  The bottom line is Apple is the retailer of tomorrow and it's here today.  With 40 new stores slotted to open this year, they're not slowing down for anyone and everyone is trying to copy them.  When you've got some time, go study them and see why they say it's "design-design-design."  (Source usatoday.com)

Counterfeiting revenues have been growing by more than 400% since the early 1990s and has grown at more than double the pace of the total apparel market over the last two years.  (Source retailertoday.com)

A 22-year-old charged with masterminding one of the largest counterfeit coupon operations in history now faces 30 years in prison for fraud and counterfeiting.  Creating fake coupons for nearly a year, authorities also say Lucas Townsend posted instructions on how to make fake coupons online for others to see.  From energy drinks to Xboxes and in one case his Tide laundry detergent counterfeits were redeemed for $200,000 worth of merchandise this past December alone.  (Source kcbd.com)

Microsoft is replacing an undisclosed number of older Xbox 360 consoles because of a disc issue tied to the console's ability to block counterfeit games.  (Source pcmag.com)

ORC ring of 5 busted in Montgomery County, New York, hitting Dollar General and Family Dollar stores over the last six months.  They would stuff merchandise in bags placed underneath a child, distract the cashier and return the merchandise for gift cards at another store and then purchase Visa gift cards.  The investigation is ongoing.  (Source dailygazette.com)

Barnes & Noble has a $1.02 billion offer on the table from Liberty Media with the stipulation that top shareholder and founder Leonard Riggio keeps a stake in the company.  With the second best selling e-reader in the market, the Nook, Barnes & Noble is introducing a new e-reader next week.   On a side note, Amazon says e-books are now outselling paperbacks by 2 to 1.   (Source wnflam.com)

New "Staff Fraudscape" report by UK fraud prevention service CIFAS shows a 63% increase in staff stealing or disclosing personal data in 2010 over 2009 with a "stark age differential crystallized in 2010 with 29% of staff fraudsters under 21 being guilty of data-related staff frauds, compared with only 3% ages 41-50 and not a single instance of over 50 committing such frauds.  The overall profile of staff fraudsters changed in 2010 -- with younger people committing more fraud than ever before.  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

Last year's historic push that filled over 20 senior Loss Prevention positions has not been met with the same success this year.  While certainly there has been a few new senior LP positions created, it isn't at the breakneck speed of last year.  If anything, we've seen a slight pullback and, in a few cases, even a decrease in senior positions.  The January and February enthusiasm and even the rather strong Q1 results have been met with caution and concern thus translating into very slow growth which can even be seen in the senior LP ranks.

eBay Asset Protection Supports Federal Government Internal Investigation

eBay Global Asset Protection team supported Federal investigators into the alleged theft and subsequent sale of the product on the internet leads to arrest of Immigration Customs Officer. The arrest capped an investigation by agents of the Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility. The suspect was a supervisory special agent in an administrative group at the NYC office of ICE, the second largest investigative agency in the federal government after the FBI. He was responsible for obtaining, storing and controlling equipment and supplies used by the NY office. Investigators searched his home seizing about $40,000 worth of items, including personal computers, printers, keyboards, police batons, flashlights, handcuffs, gloves, safety glasses, breathing respirators, SWAT team safety helmets, emergency strobe lights and sirens, two-way radio systems, rappelling ropes, life jackets, binoculars, knives and gun holsters. Managing your career upwards is a difficult task because it requires absolute commitment in every situation and environment.  You have to stay focused on what's in front of you and make sure your attitude matches your actions.  And remember always be West Point.  There's a reason every single U.S. citizen respects graduates of West Point.  It's almost a universal code so to speak.  Clean, crisp, sharp, alert, intelligent, and always a gentleman or gentlewoman.

Just a thought
