Cary Jones was named HVHC Retail’s first Director of Loss Prevention.  HVHC Retail, which encompasses Eye Care Centers of America, Inc. (ECCA) and Empire Vision, is the third largest optical retailer in the United States. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, ECCA opened in 1984 and has since grown to over 500 locations under the trade names of EyeMasters, Binyon's, Visionworks, Hour Eyes, Dr. Bizer's ValuVision, Doctor's ValuVision, Dr. Bizer's VisionWorld, Stein Optical, Vision World, Eye DRx, Empire Vision, Cambridge Eye Doctors, Total Vision Care, Davis Vision, and Empire Vision.

Mark Shoemaker, a former Group Assets Protection Team Leader at Target has been named National Director of Investigations for Toys R Us.  Toys R Us is ramping up their national investigations program including the establishment of  Regional Investigations Centers across the U.S. to help aggressively pursue organized crime cases.

Text-messaging "flash-mobs" of youths are swooping down on stores and shoplifting in St. Louis, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Chicago.  One group in Chicago actually had one leader yell out "Snatch" to initiate the shoplifting while another yelled "meet you on the Red Line!"  The latest form of thrill seeking for teens is the latest brand of retail theft -- text-theft!  Coming soon to a town near you.  (Source cbslocal.com)

BJ's Wholesale Q1 reports same store sales up 6.3%, excluding gasoline comps were up 2.4%, with sales up 10%

Abercrombie & Fitch Q1 reports same store sales up 10% with sales up 22%
Sears Q1 reports same store sales down 3.6% with sales down 3%

New mobile phone app is helping consumers in Africa and Asia identify counterfeit drugs by reading codes embedded in scratch off labels and texting the numerical code to a toll-free number to verify its legitimacy. (Source forbes.com)

Hair extensions have become "hot" items for ORC with thefts of $150,000-$90,000-$60,000 in merely three cases alone happening in beauty salons across the U.S. with one case even resulting in the store owner being killed over 80 packages of hair extensions valued at $10,000.  Police suspect the reason is because hair extensions, which retail for $60-$100, can be quickly sold online.  (Source fox40.com)

With the Gap brand's roughly 1,000 U.S. stores "shedding more then $1.6 billion in annual sales since 2004, a 32% drop," the "top priority is fixing a single flaw: women's shirts, a key driver of repeat sales that Gap has fumbled for years" according to Glenn Murphy, Gap's chief executive.  After shredding their top designer last month, it usually takes a year to typically see results change and Mr. Murphy says "I have a much higher sense of urgency" and "This brand is just too damn important to not see that kind of effort being put forward."  Mr. Murphy wears through 15 pairs of shoes a year marching through high-speed store visits and executives advise newcomers to pack food for the tours, as he doesn't stop for lunch.  There's a sense of urgency at The Gap.  (Source departmentstoreretailing.blogspot.com)

Credit Suisse's analyst, Gary Balter, says of the office supply industry's three players, Office Max-Staples-Office Depot, "Three players are at least one too many in this sector" and "Consolidation will be a necessity."  (Source fox43.com)

The new copyright bill, Protect IP Act, according to NetCoalition, a trade group with members including Google and Yahoo, would lead to "an explosion of litigation" with copyright holders seeking court orders requiring payment processors and online ad networks to stop doing business with infringing websites and cause "major headaches" for legitimate web services with "thousands of court orders."  NetCoalition is also concerned that the bill does not go far enough to protect legitimate websites and services from copyright lawsuits when they cooperate with authorities, Erickson said. Legitimate websites and services may not catch all their links or other interactions with infringing sites, but they should have legal protection if they are taking steps to shut off infringers, he said.  The trade group also wants a clearer definition of a site "dedicated to infringing activities" so that legitimate sites aren't targeted, Erickson said.  (Source csoonline.com)

Anyone who has worked to defend enterprise secrets from theft knows that the answer to success certainly doesn't come from technology alone.  "The human element is usually the weakest link," O'Neill said yesterday at the 2011 Computer Enterprise and Investigations Conference (CEIC) 2011.  The human threat is always the biggest.  This is a great article on the human threat inside every corporation.  (Source csoonline.com)

High gas prices are driving a wider wedge between the wealthy and everybody else.  The average shopper isn't in the game, except for necessities," said Faith Hope Consolo, chairman of retail leasing and marketing at Prudential Douglas Elliman. At the same time, among the rich, "Luxury products are selling like bread." (Source Associated Press)

The e-mail world may have sped up the world and allowed people to communicate virtually instantly, but it's not the forum to resolve issues between people.  If anything, the freedom an email offers insofar as the ability to write whatever best suits your points and usually with an added pinch of sarcasm may, in fact, deepen the crevasse and cause more harm.  It's much easier to write in solitude than to face your intended recipient and their immediate response.  So the next time you receive one of those OMG emails, think twice before responding because you never know who else may be reading and, after all, if you truly want to resolve an issue with a person, you need to do it the old fashion way -- face to face.
