eBay Assistance in Stolen Goods Case Leads to Jail Sentence

eBay Global Asset Protection investigators worked with Federal law enforcement investigators regarding a stolen goods case after authorities discovered a scheme to steal nearly $200,000 worth of merchandise from Sodaro's Electronics. The suspect was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Thomas Johnston after pleading guilty to mail fraud, according to a statement issued by U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin. "Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy," Goodwin said in the release. "When individuals steal from their employers, it not only damages trust, it threatens the livelihood of other employees and the fabric of communities that depend on local businesses. This sentencing underscores my office's ongoing commitment to protect small businesses in the Southern District." The Crimes Against Small Business Initiative strives to protect businesses and non-profit organizations by partnering with the business community, along with state and local police, to ensure occurrences of fraud, embezzlement, and scams are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The FBI conducted the investigation while Assistant U.S. Attorney Meredith George Thomas handled the prosecution. Click here for full article.

Half a million $$$ ORC fake return scam across nine states hits T.J. Maxx, Home Goods, and Marshalls stores. Dmitry Voytenko, 22; his sister, Valeria A. Gershanov, 21; and her husband , Vladimir Gershanov, 36 — all of the 1500 block of Cherokee Drive — were arrested Friday in Palatine after a three-month joint investigation led by TJX Companies task force (the parent company of T.J. Maxx) with help from Palatine police and the Cook County Regional Organized Task Force, said Palatine Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder. Since November, the trio would shoplift items from stores, including a HomeGoods at 7230 W. Dempster St. in Morton Grove, as well as stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Vermont, Texas and Florida, Schroeder said. They would then return the stolen goods for store credit, and use that store credit to purchase items from other stores, he said. They would also make valid returns for identical items they bought with cash, using those receipts to get additional cash for the shoplifted items, Schroeder said. The stores estimate a merchandise loss of more than $163,000, he said, while the refunds totaled more than $500,000. (Source

Tidel Releases Sentinel SCM Stacker Bag

Carrollton, Texas — Tidel Engineering, L.P. announces the availability of a unique Sentinel Cash Management System, the Sentinel SCM (Sentinel Control Module) Stacker Bag system, to the USA market. This new design replaces the traditional note cassette with a heat sealed bag for collecting the notes as they are dropped into the safe. The heat sealed bag assures the retailer than cash shrinkage on the way to the bank is a thing of the past.

The primary new features of the Sentinel SCM Stacker Bag are:

•   Two bulk note feeder heads - each validate notes at 30 notes per minute
•   Notes are staged in a holding device and dropped in a 500 note bundles
•   Notes are dropped into two standard deposit bags, with a capacity of 2,000 notes each
•   The bags are heat sealed before the door is unlocked by armored car or a store manager
•   The bags are tamper evident; should any attempt be made to take cash
•   Preauthorized personnel can remove validator heads if a note jam is detected
•   Connects to all Sentinel note and coin processing modules

"The SCM Stacker Bag Module is the first safe that provides removable, standard deposit bags that are heat sealed to protect the bank deposit integrity. No one can touch the cash, regardless if the deposit is made by a store manager or by armored car. It would take a slice in the bag to remove any cash, and that is very tamper evident," said Ed Grondahl, EVP Global Sales at Tidel.

"The Tidel Sentinel SCM Stacker Bag drops cash in 500 note bundles and the bundles stay in easy to handles stacks for the bank or counting center. Our tests with major banks have indicated no additional handling charges for the bags versus a cassette based system," Ed continued.

Tidel has been a manufacturer of cash security equipment designed for specialty retail marketer’s since 1978. Tidel designs and manufactures products for cash security and robbery prevention, as well as retail cash management. To date, Tidel has sold more than 300,000 systems in the U.S. and over 50 other countries. Information about the company and its products may be found on the company’s website at

An undercover boss makes a good leader Recently we published an article about why being an "undercover boss" was a bad thing. Here's an article showing why being an "undercover boss" can also be a good thing, for you and your employees.  (Walk in their shoes)

What's your leadership position? When management issues arise, it may be because the people on your team are playing the wrong roles. If you are not playing the right role at the right time, you create gaps that can open up risks. (Don't "play out of position")

5 steps to choosing the right challenges Challenge is the pathway to engagement and progress in our lives. But not all challenges are created equal. Some challenges make us feel alive, engaged, connected, and fulfilled. Others simply overwhelm us. (Choose "good" challenges)

How employers can make us stop multitasking  With increasing automation in every aspect of organization work, people tend to be left with tasks that require judgment, thought, and creativity. (Managers: avoid the multitasking trap)

Tip of the Day - Sponsored by Vector Security

When you apply for a job through email with an attached resume, incorporate your cover letter in the body of the email. Add your accomplishments that relate to the job description you're applying for. Also, take this opportunity to sell yourself by briefly explaining the key differentiators that separate you from other candidates. In today's market, employers are receiving hundreds of resumes so you want to make it easy for the reviewer to see why you are a better fit and stand out from the crowd. Do not add your cover letter as an attachment. This approach creates added steps for the employer which increases the chance that they may not take the time to even open it.

Just a Thought,
