Mike Limauro was named Vice President of Asset Protection for Weis Markets.  Formerly the Director of Loss Prevention for Farm Fresh, a division of Supervalu, Mike has over 20 years of experience in the grocery industry and helped define the early stages of Kmart's Super stores grocery side of the business.  Obviously, he'll be reviewing the entire program at Weis Markets and designing a best in class model that we're confident will be very successful.  Congratulations Mike!

Louis Vuitton is suing the operators of 182 websites for selling counterfeit goods in U.S. District Court for Nevada in Las Vegas.  One of the attorney's handling the suit for Louis Vuitton, Stephen Gaffigan of Fort Lauderdale, FL is also handling the case Tiffany filed on April 18th in the same court against 223 defendants.  Some of the sites like bagsfactory.net and louisvuittonreplica.org go over the line of boldness and are truly a reflection of just how far the internet has gone in almost making buying counterfeit acceptable.  (Source vegasinc.com)

ORC is happening in Canada just as much as in the U.S.  In Manitoba, an ORC ring of 6 were busted in Brandon that had been traveling across the Province with bags from the specific stores they were shoplifting from.  (Source cpheraldleader.com)

The AT&T and T-Mobile $39 billion merger is being reviewed by a U.S. Senate panel today where executives will try to prove that the merger will benefit consumers and still leave room for competition.  Sprint, Nextel and Cellular South will also be testifying probably against the merger.  Although the Justice Department and the FCC will approve or block the transaction, they'll certainly be influenced by the government review today.  If merged together, this will ultimately lead to a merger of the LP departments and a possible reduction in force.  (Source Associated Press)

Large scale mergers don't always happen -- as was the case many years ago when Staples and Office Depot tried to merge which was blocked by the SEC.  Some industry followers have even said that Staples benefited from the attempt by virtue of having a full open-book look at their stores' operating methodologies.  Fast forward to today and some are saying that industry doesn't have room for three players and the rumors of Office Depot and Office Max merging may be an industry necessity long term.

Apple told Congress yesterday that the iPhone's logging of Wi-Fi hot spots and cell towers is meant to improve service and not stalk customers.  They also said the data sent back to Apple about locations is anonymous and not tied to a particular user.  Their intent is to make location-based services, such as mobile mapping, work faster.  But in earlier articles, it wasn't Apple's use that was the concern.  It was that, with an additional tool, the public could use the iPhone tracking to locate anyone they wanted.  (Source Associated Press)

At a Plainfield, IL flea market police seized 3,127 counterfeit/pirated DVDs.  (Source suntimes.com)

eBay Inc. Diversifies Interest in Skype, Business Sold to Microsoft for $8.5Billion

eBay Inc. decided to divest Skype because of its limited synergies with its core businesses -- payments and commerce -- enabling a clearer focus on fully growing and investing in the PayPal and eBay business models and long-term strategies. Microsoft and Skype Global have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire 100% of Skype, the leading Internet communications company. With the announcement that Microsoft will pay $8.5B in cash for Skype's equity and debt, it's clear they made a sound investment. eBay Inc. had previously retained approx 30% of the Skype business, it was acquired by Silver Lake Investment Group in 2009, and said its total return on original investment was around $1.4B and they will receive approx. $2.3B from this sale transaction providing greater flexibility in future investments.

Individual growth is an overly used phrase for something that is extremely difficult to truly accomplish.  Corporate America tends to force it faster than many can absorb.  Out of necessity or by design it requires a mental investment and a conscious effort on the part of the executive to truly grow beyond their current capabilities.  Consequently, growth is oftentimes as a result of direct force or life-changing events.  But it is a necessity if one expects to advance and stay current with the industry.  Technology represents the Loss Prevention industry's biggest opportunity for growth and if one expects to be a leader tomorrow it would be wise to grow your technology education.

Good Luck
