News Brief - Sponsored by WG Security Products

Yahoo's Director who conducted the search for their new CEO and has errors in her academic record won't stand for re-election to the board and Yahoo acknowledged the CEO claimed he had a degree in computer science he didn't have as well The fall-out begins as the Director who managed the search is the first to go. They set up a special committee of three directors to examine how the erroneous credentials of the C.E.O., Scott Thompson, were overlooked during his hiring process. The committee is tasked with determining how the chief executiveís incorrect credentials survived the boardís vetting process and ended up in official documents and regulatory filings. What's even just as interesting is that they had hired a well-known international search firm - Heidrick & Struggles to conduct the CEO search but Thompson, then the president of eBay's PayPal unit reached out to the board directly because Heidrick & Struggles had placed him at eBay. So Yahoo's Director managing the search hired a different firm to assess Thompson's credentials. That's a little fishy actually in and of itself - having been there ourselves before. What remains unclear so far is when the error in Mr. Thompsonís academic information was discovered. Until last week, Yahoo filings described its chief as holding degrees in both accounting and computer science from Stonehill College, outside Boston. After Third Point called attention to the error, the company conceded that its chief held only the accounting degree. Yahoo has described the error as inadvertent. But regulatory filings by Splunk and F5 Networks, on whose boards Mr. Thompson serves, state that he holds only an accounting degree. His fate is unclear but rumors have it that some board members want him to stay and late Monday he emailed Yahoo employees an apology saying "We have all been working very hard to move the company forward, and this has had the opposite effect," he wrote in the e-mail. "For that, I take full responsibility, and I want to apologize to you." (Source nytimes.com)

Fewer stores more digital shoppers - means retailers don't need to expand their store count or operate as many locations because more of their business is becoming web-based. In 2011, 30 of the top 74 largest chains closed stores and the web is the fastest growing channel. (Source internetretailer.com)

The UK's double dip recession is hitting retailers hard with a 3.3% decrease in same store sales in April after last years April 5.2% increase. On a total basis, sales were down 1.0%, against a 6.9% increase in April 2011. (Source theretailbulletin.com)

It's rumored that a VP of LP position in the industry has been filled - announcement due in a matter of days.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not recognize the retail Loss Prevention industry but yet recognized the computer security industry a few years ago after the massive cybercrime growth. With our history and the fact that our industry is now in its third generation with as many as 42,000 to 55,000 individuals employed in the industry it's time they do. Especially given the fact that the retail LP industry is one of the most lucrative, if not the most lucrative, group in the entire "Protective Services" category. The Daily plans to launch an anonymous population census with the top 200+ retailers over the next few months and petition the Bureau of Labor Statistics to recognize our industry group. Certainly this will be a significant task and hopefully your retailer will participate in the census. If we're successful, the mere fact that we're recognized by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will open a number of doors and in actuality cause academia to take our industry group even more seriously on a national scale as opposed to the few that recognize us now and are leading the effort which have been very beneficial. We invite your support and look forward to your comments.

Charming Charlie's hires a non LP search firm to conduct its first Director of Loss Prevention search This fast growth 178 store chain based out of Houston, TX., had been working with LP consultants up until now. It's a women's specialty fashion accessories and women's handbags retailer that in 2010 won the International Council of Shopping Centers "Hot Retailer of 2010" award.

With eBay ramping up its counterfeit fight now Taobao, China's biggest online shopping site is working with firms to bust online vendors selling knock-offs. eBay Theft Investigation Leads to Jail for Three Suspects

eBay Global Asset Protection team supported investigation into organized theft and resell of car parts leads to conviction and jail sentence for three suspects. The three men were jailed for their part in well planned operation selling stolen car parts via the online auction site Ebay. Stolen vehicles were broken up at a workshop by the former mechanics then sold by other co-conspirators. The court heard that in some cases they made dummy bids to manipulate the auction price upwards and also sent endorsements, pretending to be satisfied customers to improve their standing to potential buyers. The court said "This was a carefully planned exercise to be able to receive these stolen goods, and to organize their breakdown and disposal by sale. "Each of you played your parts." How to Deal: Handling the Impossible Co-Worker Unless you're really lucky, you probably have at least one rude, ungracious, or otherwise difficult co-worker who rubs you the wrong way. But if neither one of your are going anywhere any time soon, how do you deal?  (Why can't we just all get along?)

Can We Talk? How to Confront Someone at Work There's almost nothing worse than being wronged by someone at work. Except for then having to confront the person who's wronged you. Confronting a colleague isn't always easy, but it is possible. Here's how to keep your cool, address the issue, and build stronger relationships.  (They're inevitable)

Turn Around Negative Attitudes: 8 Tips Neutralizing a negative attitude - within yourself or an employee - takes time and plenty of effort. However, another aspect of turning around negativity lies in the little things you do, which may just be what you say or how you say it. (Don't be a "negative-buster")

10 Ways to Motivate Anyone  There is no cookie-cutter approach to motivating your people. What inspires one person may leave the next cold. When you understand an employee's thinking and behavioral preferences, you'll be able to maximize his or her enthusiasm. This will help you get your workforce aligned. (Move in the same direction)

Killer Commutes

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine published a study earlier this week describing the negative health effects of commutes exceeding 15 miles each way. Elevated blood pressure, obesity, tension, stress, and fatigue were among the maladies recognized in a sample of more than 4,000 men and women commuters in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Researchers speculated that those who spend more time sitting in traffic displace time that they might have spent engaged in greater physical activity. They further hypothesize that those with long, congested commutes donít eat or sleep as well, suffer more depression and anxiety, and experience more social isolation. Donít let your commute kill you:

∑ Take a walk during lunch.

∑ Adjust your work schedule to avoid heavy congestion.

∑ Take a slightly longer route if you can keep moving vs. sitting in traffic.

∑ Listen to soothing music rather than "news" or "talk radio."

∑ Use the stairs rather than an elevator as often as possible.
