A true sign that AP can go beyond! Congratulations Todd in leading the way.

BEHIND THE STORY The largest cargo-theft ring ever busted in the U.S. reported last week used parking lots at Toys "R" Us in North Bergen and Home Depot in Clifton among several locations along the East Coast to traffic more than $80 million worth of stolen prescription drugs, over-the-counter meds, and other goods, federal authorities said. Following a three-year undercover investigation that began out of the Newark FBI office and criss-crossed the country, with just about all of the stolen goods ending up in Florida. Federal complaints outlined a massive trafficking network, which moved huge shipments of stolen goods up and down the East Coast and across the country. They also detail meetings held in Hudson, Passaic and Union counties, thanks to an informant working for the government. Samples of the goods were provided during some of those meetings, where federal authorities said thousands in brokers’ fees were paid. While FBI agents monitored the action, the informant – acting as a buyer -- met with two of the defendants in the Toys "R" Us parking lot on March 19, 2010. Following a recorded conversation, he left with a bag of sample that included Bayer aspirin and other products that were part of a $2.9 million haul. In another meeting, a van loaded with some of the Bayer goods stolen in Mississippi was picked up at the Home Depot by an undercover agent brought into the mix. The biggest cargo theft bust in U.S. history and it all started with a water bottle with finger prints left behind at the Eli Lilly warehouse break-in. (Source cliffviewpilot.com)

Online crime cost Europe $977B and Interpol says fighting it is their top priority. The president of the global police network Interpol told a conference of 49 European member states on Tuesday that online crime is increasing and crossing borders. He pointed to a recent study by London Metropolitan University that found 80 percent of cyber crime is connected to international organized gangs. (Source Associated Press)

In the fashion design capital of the world - Italy - the counterfeiting market value has reached $9.2B And their parliamentary committee of inquiry says it's caused 130,000 to lose their jobs. The courts haven't backed recent attempts to shut down websites using similar or logo-like names because there isn't sufficient evidence showing the sites are selling counterfeit goods. So the companies are using Certilogo verification buttons and 12-digit codes on products customers can use to call and validate authenticity. (Source internetretailer.com)

Hedge fund Third Point sends Yahoo request for Scott Thompson's records and finds the director who managed the search for Yahoo's new CEO also had factual errors in her academic record as well. Lying about degrees and salaries can cause a world of problems and you can lose your job. And they are the two most lied about points in the recruitment process. (Source nytimes.com)

Massachusetts newly revised CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) law limits criminal history searches to 10 years with the exception of homicides and sex offenses. Under the latest CORI overhaul, all employers, landlords, and background screening companies can access the Internet-based registry. They also will not include old arrests that did not result in a conviction. The rationale for the limit, according to the state, is to provide greater opportunities for offenders who stay out of trouble to reintegrate into society. (Source boston.com)

Trials begin on the two men who drove a van through Fashion Valley Mall last year in broad daylight to rob a jewelry store. Accused in a string of smash-and-grab robberies across California the men wearing ski masks smashing glass cases with heavy tools at gun point also stormed a casino. They both face life in prison. WG's IR Wave
Technology - Self Alarming Tags

Wave

Reprogrammable Self-Alarming Infrared (IR) Tag System
Wave technology represents a revolutionary new series of 58 kHz Electronic Article Surveillance products utilizing IR technology. Wave products significantly raise the bar in theft prevention by combining the ever popular ball clutch mechanism, 58 kHz passive ferrites for higher detection rates, and a new extreme security 4 alarm tag feature.

Standard tags cause an alarm only when passed through an EAS system. However, if the tag is surreptitiously removed, then the article may leave the premises without setting off an alarm. Wave Tags detach using Superlock magnetic detachers; however, these advanced tags also include a unique feature that causes the tag to emit an audible alarm if opened without first being disarmed by the Wave IR Deactivator.

videoFeatures

Microprocessor based for functional accuracy
User defined IR code for optimum security
Tampering causes tag to self-alarm
Tag self-alarms if opened with non-Wave detacher
Tag self-alarms at EAS pedestal
Pedestal alarms when Wave tag is in its range
Wave tags available in shell, pencil and lanyard versions
5 year battery life

Wave is a multipurpose device that arms/disarms the Wave Tag with a coded IR signal. It also includes integrated magnetic detachers for opening the tags. For added protection, Wave products are programmable so that each store may assign its own unique code to its tags. Offered in flushmount and table top models, Wave is also tethered for the convenience of disarming tags attached to articles that cannot be placed on the counter top.

Controlled Access
Wave access is controlled even when the register is unmanned. The optional Data Cord module interfaces Wave to the POS register, where the user can enable/disable the deactivation function right from the register.

Wave is a Green Product
In keeping with environmental concerns, Wave is RoHS compliant and is also designed for low power consumption.

5 Ways to Make Firing Someone Less Painful Time to cut someone loose? Even if it's long past time for them to go, firing an employee can be difficult. Here are five tips to make firing someone easier on the both of you and put you back on the road to happiness again.  (Just do it!)

You're Fired: A First-Time Manager's Guide to Letting Someone Go Many managers place firing at the top of their list of their most difficult responsibilities and it will never be easy. That said, when it does come time to part ways with an employee, you can rely on a few key steps to make it less intimidating.  (End the humiliation)

Having 'The Talk': Wise Words for Discipline Discussions Being an effective manager means confronting those "challenging" employees who, while typically good at their jobs, too often display unprofessional or downright obnoxious behavior. Managers who silently put up with such behavior will undermine their own authority. (Impact)

What to Do About Whiners
We all get frustrated. It's ok when someone groans because things go wrong. Griping is another story. Negativity breeds negativity. Employees who are negative harp on problems, accuse others and make snide remarks. (Solve it or shove it)

Tip of the Day - Sponsored by Vector Security

When you think you’ve got your job mastered think again. That’s usually when something bad happens in ones career or company. If you reach that point, and most everyone does, it's time to re-evaluate everything you’re doing. Go on the hunt for new technology, new ideas, rewrite your program, take a fresh look at every aspect of your department and maybe even bring in a consultant you don’t know or have ties to. Someone who will challenge you and debate with you, and won’t be there to merely confirm what you’re doing and agree with your approach. But someone who will test you and force you to grow someone who you may even be uncomfortable with. Get out of your comfort zone and have some fun!

Just a Thought,
Gus Downing
