Operation Southern Hospitality- the largest takedown of
a cargo theft ring in US history - 11 member gang who
stole more than $100 million - with 2 brothers and 10
others arrested. They orchestrated the Eli Lilly
warehouse $80M drug heist in March 2010 but one man
touched a water bottle in the warehouse and left it
behind. These defendants moved truckloads and
pallets of stolen pharmaceuticals from other states to
South Florida for storage and ultimate sale. One of the
thefts alone was the largest individual theft of
prescription drugs in United States history, as
described by the authorities, was intricately
orchestrated and meticulously executed but one guy left
a water bottle. A five hour operation with tools they
bought
from Home Depot and leased tractor-trailers and upscale
rental cars. On Thursday, Amaury Villa, 37, and Amed
Villa, 46, his brother, both Cuban citizens living in
Miami who have extensive arrest records, were charged in
connection with the March 2010 theft of drugs. All told,
at least 12 people were charged in several states in
connection with a string of thefts of drugs, cigarettes
and liquor in recent years, which included the one from
Eli Lilly, a theft from a GlaxoSmithKline warehouse in
Virginia, and shipments stolen at truck stops in several
states. A three year undercover FBI investigation! These

The largest seizure at a flea market in U.S. history -
the raid of Baltimore's Patapsco flea market netted
$47.3M last month after they were done counting all the
goods. Federal officials released new details
of the April 22 raid on the bazaar, where authorities
say vendors sold counterfeit and pirated goods with the
market owner's knowledge. The raid came after a 2 1/2
year sting targeting merchants selling fake and pirated
goods at the popular market, which has a history of
similar seizures, according to federal documents. (Source

happened to him. Being accurate in your resume is an

One woman ORC operation hitting Wal-Mart and Target stores
in northern Texas and Oklahoma stealing dozens of iPad
tablets. Sherman police are
joining investigative forces with several other North Texas
and Oklahoma agencies in hopes of finding a woman suspected
of shoplifting dozens of iPad tablets. Hitting at least 28
Wal-Marts and several Target stores area wide police have
released photographs. The suspect operates the same way at
every retail store, concentrating on those which provide
both grocery and electronic sales. She gets a grocery cart,
shops extensively throughout the store, and fills it with
groceries and sometimes other items. Then, she goes to the
electronics department and selects, usually, three iPads,
which a store clerk carries to the checkout counter for her.
In those stores, it has been the practice for the cashier to
ring up the electronic items first. The surveillance video
shows the cashiers
ringing
up the iPads, and that is when their security devices are
deactivated, and then the cashiers place them in plastic
bags. It is customary for the customer to place all their
purchases on a conveyor belt in both retail chains. Then,
the cashier takes the items from her right, rings them up,
and puts them in plastic bags on her left. The customer
usually helps move the process along by putting the plastic
bags in the waiting, empty grocery cart. The suspect is seen
in the videos first removing the plastic bags containing the
iPads. She moves them to the grocery cart, near a large tote
bag. As the cashier is concentrating on continuing the
checkout on the numerous groceries still on the belt, the
suspect is seen then slipping the plastic bags and iPads
into the tote bag. Moments later, she tells the cashier she
has to go to her car to get more cash, and, with the tote
bag in tow, she leaves the store, along with the unpaid-for
iPads. (Source

IT and Physical Security Industries Collide at Interop as
Networking Veteran Vincent Ricco Joins Axis Communications
Ricco aims to evangelize IP video surveillance benefits and
raise
Technology Partner Program to new levels for entire channel
CHELMSFORD, Mass. – Interop Booth #621 – May 3, 2012 –
Axis Communications, the world leader in network video,
today announced that 23-year network hardware and software
industry veteran Vincent Ricco has joined the company as
North American Business Development Manager for the
Technology Partner Program. Ricco will join the
Axis team at Interop 2012 (booth #621) to showcase the
company’s network video surveillance solutions and educate
the IT industry on the ongoing technology shift from analog
CCTV to IP-based video surveillance.
Despite
image quality, functionality, total cost of ownership and
scalability benefits of IP video surveillance, analog
technology still comprises an estimated 70 percent of new
physical security installations. However, industry analysts
predict that by 2014 network video surveillance sales will
overtake analog in terms of revenue (IMS Research) and, by
2020, the surveillance market will be nearly 100 percent
IP-based.
Through Ricco’s leadership, Axis aims to bridge the gap
between physical security, hardware and infrastructure
providers to build tight partnerships and mutual
interoperability testing procedures that deliver complete IP
video surveillance solutions. The Axis Technology Partner
Program will grow to not only provide sales opportunities
for leading IT hardware and infrastructure partners, but
also solutions, sales and technical training and overall
industry education for the entire channel – from security
and IT systems integrators to distributors and end-users.
"Some of my friends and colleagues have asked, 'Why move
from IT to physical security?' My response is always the
same: It moved into me," said Ricco. "In a world where
nearly everything has gone digital, video surveillance is
one of the last pure growth opportunities for IP technology.
As the inventor of the IP camera and today’s industry
leader, Axis was the logical choice for me."
Ricco joins Axis following nearly two decades at Allied
Telesis, Inc., a leading manufacturer of Layer 2-7 network
hardware and software solutions. He held a variety of
positions during his tenure at Allied, from district sales
manager to vice president of sales. Most recently, Ricco was
a senior network consultant working with end-users and
integrators to provide infrastructure guidance for the
physical security, transportation and healthcare markets.
"I’m excited to help evangelize the benefits of IP video
while, at the same time, demystifying the technology for
both analog users and the traditional IT channel," he
continued.
Ricco will report directly to Rob Muehlbauer – who was
recently promoted to business development programs manager –
and will work with the global partner and business
development teams at Axis to help hardware, software and
infrastructure partners navigate the physical security
landscape amidst the analog to digital surveillance
technology shift.
"When you consider our goals for the Technology Partner
Program in North America, I can’t think of a better time
than Interop to announce that Vince has joined our team,"
said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager, Axis Communications,
Inc. "As our industry moves toward all IP, we’ll need
technology partners by our side that are committed to growth
in network video surveillance and the best in
interoperability."
Vincent Ricco has been a contributor to various IT standards
organizations, such as the
TIA/EIA Fiber Optic LAN Section and the
HIMSS Infrastructure Standards Committee. He is based in
San Jose, Calif., and will be one of the 150-plus regional
employees reporting to the
brand new Axis North American Headquarters in
Chelmsford, Mass.

Perfecting the Art of the Ask
Whether advancing a cause, making
a request, or persuading others of the merits of our view,
negotiating for what we want - often and effectively - is a
survival technique for a leader. Perhaps the best news of
all, this is a skill that can be learned.

Sharing Ideas with Authority Figures
It should come as no surprise that when the boss asks a
question, staff rack their brains trying to remember if the
answer has already been supplied and perhaps they were not
paying attention. Because of this, staff have a tendency to
keep to themselves and not offer their ideas.

Energy is the primary force behind success and without it
mediocrity or failure is almost guaranteed. The ability to
move things forward and influence change requires energy and
there's a direct correlation to the amount of it and to the
degree of success. It's great to start off energized and
gung ho about a project or initiative, but it's critical to
maintain the energy thru to completion. As one senior
executive has said, "there's no bad plan -- it's always a
matter of execution" and execution is all about energy. So
when you think you've lost your energy, take a break, do
something different, and give your mind a chance to
re-energize. Because the worst thing you can do is to try to
execute without it.
Just a Thought,
Gus Downing
