(Source retailingtoday.com) Delhaize 1Q reports U.S. same store sales down 0.3% Big 5 1Q reports same store sales down 0.9% Federal agents in Gainesville, FL raided a retail shop yesterday and seized close to $200,000 in counterfeit clothing, shoes, sunglasses and other brand names. (Source gainesville.com) This past Sunday, St. Charles, IL police arrested 4 suspects for selling counterfeit goods at the Kane County Fairgrounds Flea Market and seized 5,000 counterfeit items with the typical knock off brands - Tiffany, Coach, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton. (Source cbslocal.com) The U.S. Federal Trade Commission will require two companies, that had data breaches which exposed their employees and business partners, to undergo independent security audits for 20 years and to implement comprehensive information security programs. (Source csoonline.com) Most business analysts estimate the Sony breach will cost Sony upwards of $2 billion. But every journalist is saying that it was even worst that Sony didn't tell their 77 million customers about it for nearly a week and now we learn of another 25 million Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) customers were breached as well. (Source Associated Press) Walgreen April same store sales up 3.4% A Nordstrom security guard at the Westchester Mall store in New York was arrested for turning off the surveillance cameras and stealing more than $4,000 last month from cash registers. (Source lohud.com) Aaron's, a major furniture rental chain, is alleged in a federal lawsuit to load their rental computers with spyware to track renters' keystrokes, make screenshots and even take webcam images of them using the computers at home. One store manager even showed a renter a picture of the renter using the computer - taken by the computer's webcam. When asked where the store manager got the picture, he "responded that he was not suppose to disclose that Aaron's had the photograph." Aaron's which operates 1,800 company-operated stores and franchised stores in the U.S. and Canada, said that the specific computer in question was rented from a franchise operator and also said "it believes that none of its more than 1,140 company-operated stores had used" the spyware. You never know who's watching! (Source Associated Press) The FBI is warning computer users against unsolicited emails purporting to show photos or videos of the killing of Osama bin Laden as a new virus that steals your data is being circulated. eBay Acquires MIssionFish Supporting Charity Marketing Efforts eBay has acquired MissionFish -- the innovative technology and team that powers the eBay Giving Works program. Since 2003, A partner with eBay for 8 years, MissionFish has provided back-end tech to power the eBay Giving Works program in the US. The company raises funds by allowing sellers on eBay to donate some of the proceeds from their sales to a nonprofit of their choice, while nonprofits can raise funds by selling directly on eBay as well. MissionFish founder Sean Milliken said in a statement, "In addition to bringing our seasoned social entrepreneurs in-house, eBay is investing their money, their people and their brainpower into our mission." Donations were up 7% in 2010, according to eBay, raising a total $54.8 million in the U.S. and the UK for the year. Approximately one donation is made every 24 seconds through eBay Giving Works, raising $91 every minute, with $4.01 being the average amount donated. (Click here for article.) In college Philosophy 101, they introduce the question "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?" My answer is yes, but you've got to listen and hear it. Listening and hearing what they say is oftentimes two entirely different functions that most of us don't do on a daily basis, if ever. One of the keys to success is listening and hearing what people say and don't say. It's not just the words, it's the meaning and the intention behind what everyone says in every conversation or interview. Listening is the key and hearing is the lock the key fits into. If you expect to lead a group or land that perfect job, you've got to listen and hear what they're saying in order to respond, influence and truly make a difference. Good Luck Gus Downing
