Moving Up

Mike DiBella
Mike DiBella
was named Director of Loss Prevention for Deb Shops. Before joining with Deb Shops, Mike held Director of Asset Protection/Loss Prevention positions with both Polo Ralph Lauren and Urban Outfitters, Inc. Before being promoted at Urban Outfitters, Mike was the Loss Prevention Operations Manager and the Regional Loss Prevention Manager, spending a total of 12 years with the company. He has also held Loss Prevention Manager positions with both Kohl's and Bascov's Department Stores. Congrats Mike!
Rob Skelly was named Loss Prevention Director for US Security Associates, Central US. Before his new hire, Rob spent eight years at Ross Stores as the Senior Loss Prevention Manager. Prior to that he held the title of Regional Loss Prevention Manager at both Staples (for four years) and AutoZone (for three years). Congrats Rob!

Ascena Retail Group now becomes the largest women's specialty clothing retailer in the U.S. with 4,373 stores, by store count only, with their purchase of Charming Shoppes.

Since their purchase of Maurice's in 04' and Tween brands in 09' Dress Barn, which in Jan '11 reorganized into what is now known has the Ascena Retail Group, has grown methodically and steadily even throughout the recent recession. This is evidenced by their purchase of Tween Brands (Justice) in 09' at the height of the recession. Now with their purchase of Charming Shoppes (Lane Bryant and Fashion Bug stores) they become the largest women's specialty clothing retailer in the U.S. in so far as store numbers are concerned with 4,373 stores. Certainly it's been a little volatile of late for LP, with their eliminating the senior corporate Loss Prevention position earlier this year and decentralizing the LP functions and having the senior LP position of each division reporting into each separate divisions operating group. But the good news for LP is two fold with first their hiring an Assistant Vice President of LP for their Dress Barn division last month with Brian Bazer and secondly the fact that with this new structure the VP of LP for Charming Shoppes John Davis has nothing to worry about and in actuality his department which is delivering excellent shrinkage results and superb e-commerce fraud numbers has a lot to bring to the table. So this new announcement is a great thing for the organization and represents a very stable environment for any LP executive looking at them in the near future for career opportunities, as evidenced just yesterday in the Daily with Ted Grekos's promotion to Senior Manager Global Security & Compliance for Charming Shoppes. Their senior management team would have never authorized such a promotion just days before such an announcement if they didn't support LP growth. So we'd like to congratulate the entire Ascena Retail Group LP team on becoming the biggest in the U.S.

(Left to Right) Led by Brian Bazer - AVP LP & Risk Mgt. at Dress Barn; John Davis - VP LP at Charming Shoppes;
Rob LaCommare- AVP LP at Tween Brands; and Chad Hixon - Dir. of LP at Maurices.

Loss Prevention Community Involvement with International Community

On April 14 Andrew Schneider, the Divisional Loss Prevention Manager with Rent-A-Center based in Atlanta, had an opportunity to travel to Haiti to do some Mission work. His church, Victory World Church, was involved in a school/orphanage project for a mission over in Leagone, Haiti. The team, consisting of 6 people, went over and constructed the shell of the building in 7 days which is 50’ X 100’ and 18’ tall.
The school will be home to 400 children daily who currently attend a school that has tarp walls and a tin ceiling.  There are 5 classrooms in the current location, all different grades and they are side by side.  It is a very difficult learning environment considering the fact there is no privacy.  The new facility will have separate classrooms and be housed inside a building keeping the kids safe from the elements.

It is very rewarding to be able to give back to a great cause.  In November last year Andrew had the fortunate opportunity to be part of a building project in South Africa and he found it a blessing to give of his time for those that cannot help themselves.  He prays that everyone would give a little of their time to make an impact in others’ lives locally or around the world.  Together we can all make a difference.

Cabela's "Both Guns Blazing" ORC team - article in NRF Stores The outfitter has created a team of asset protection professionals with twin focuses: combating ORC in its 34 stores across the United States and in Canada and organized e-commerce crime. Led by Brad Dykes, Director of Asset Protection "For the past couple of years, Cabela’s has been looking at organized retail crime, identifying trends and patterns" at store level, says Dykes, who joined the company in fall 2011. "Now, we’ve decided to target the demand side. We have to get to the fence level." Great article and great coverage. (Source stores.org)

Best Buy loses their EVP and chief marketing officer on top of losing their CEO and their chief technology officer. Losing three top senior executives all in the matter of a few months is going to have an impact and when they're already losing market share this won't help. (Source startribune.com)

Target will stop selling Amazon's Kindles and will continue to sell Barnes & Noble's Nook Great development for Barnes & Noble. Must be nice having Microsoft as a partner. (Source internetretailer.com)

Most retailers saw a slow down in April compared to February and March with 21 chain's same store sales up only 0.8% As unseasonably warm weather and an earlier Easter likely pulled sales of spring merchandise into February and March. This was the 32nd straight monthly rise after 12 consecutive months of declines. (Source retailsails.com)

UK retailer GAME closes 277 stores after coming out of bankruptcy and reduces corporate headcount. From all indications the game industry is taking a hit worldwide and with March sales in the U.S. taking a 25% drop the future is all about change. (Source theretailbulletin.com)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology rolls out WS-Biometrics Devices - WS-BD's - for desktops, laptops, e-tablets and smartphones. to access sensors that capture biometric data such as fingerprints, iris images and face images using web services. (Source govinfosecurity.com)

The Partnership for Priority Video Alarm Response - a new partnership linking the alarm industry with law enforcement and insurers. The new public/private partnership brings together all of the stakeholders in property crime to reduce losses and increase arrests through the use of video intrusion alarms. Among the participants are the National Sheriffs Association and the National Insurance Crime Bureau, with Don Young of Protection 1 and Steve Walker of Stanley Convergent Security Solutions representing the alarm industry on the PPVAR board. Law enforcement across America is partnering with all of their stakeholders more and more, from the retailers to the alarm companies. With today's technology it's much easier to communicate and share information and thus form great effective partnerships that truly make a difference. This will ultimately help retailers resolve burglaries and robberies much faster. (Source securitysystemsnews.com)

eBay Supported Theft Investigation Leads to Guilty Plea

eBay Global Asset Protection team supported investigation into theft of property form National Archives leads to guilty plea and jail sentence. The culprit was the recently retired head of the video and sound branch of the National Archives and Records Administration – the government agency entrusted with preserving such documents as the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. The suspect, a 40-year employee, acknowledged stealing thousands of sound recordings from the archive, and prosecutors say more than 1,000 were sold on eBay. The thefts started as early as 2001, and the stolen recordings include items ranging from a recording of the 1948 World Series to an eyewitness report of the Hindenburg crash and interview recording with baseball legend Babe Ruth. Soon after his guilty plea, however, suspect wrote an apology letter to friends and colleagues, saying he was "deeply ashamed and embarrassed" by his actions. But he denied that the records he took and sold, worth at least $30,000, were "unique or of significant historical value." Click here for full article.

Congratulations on the one year anniversary of the WSORCA Website. I think back to the very first meeting I had with retailers, all 11 of them. And I look at where we are today as of this morning we have 839 registered members, representing 114 cities and 14 states and Canada. This information sharing website has gotten to where it is today all by word of mouth. We have had 37 arrests that I am aware of based solely on information obtained from the WSORCA website.

I am very proud of each and every one of you for the work you have done and I hope to reach the goal of 1,000 members by the end of the year. Please continue to spread the word and get all of our law enforcement, retail, and prosecutors on board. Remember the more we share information, the more we will be able to control this epidemic.

We have set the date for the training conference as October 18th, 2012 at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission in Burien Washington. Please sign up for the conference on the website and you will be emailed all the specifics about the conference. I hope to see all members of WSORCA at the conference. This conference is being provided free of charge by the generous donations from our retail partners.

Once again, congratulations on the one year anniversary and I hope to see everyone in October.

Work/Life Balance or Time Management?

Submitted by Sandy Chandler, LPC, CPP
Regional Director, Asset Protection at Rite Aid

May 2, 2012

When we look at the term "Work/Life Balance" what image comes to mind? With a second adopted child coming into my family, I look at the phrase "work/life balance" and think to myself, "How do I fulfill my additional family responsibilities with another child, while still excelling at work?"

The answer?

In my opinion, there is not a work/life balance, but rather, an effective management of your time.

I live and die by my Outlook calendar and iPhone reminders. To be quite honest, I would be lost without it. I schedule everything on my Outlook calendar. Family appointments and reminders are listed as private appointments, but scheduled the same as work.

How do we achieve this balance to get everything done? Aside from strategic planning and having a very supportive family, one thing I do is spend the last 15 minutes of my day reflecting on what I accomplished throughout the day.

I ask myself, "How did I make an impact today?" "What do I need to get done tomorrow?" "What more can I do?"

If you plan the night before, then you are ready to hit the ground running the next day.

When effectively planning your time, you can basically divide your tasks and appointments into 4 quadrants.

Think of 4 boxes. In box 1, are the emergency appointments (the have to do’s-both important and urgent.) Box 2 signifies what needs to get done - important, but not urgent. In box 3 are less important tasks, and the box 4 consists of fillers for your time - low priority tasks that can be completed when time allows.

To be effective planners, we should be spending most of our time in box 2, not box 1 putting out fires. (Yes, in our line of work emergencies happen often, but planning makes all the difference.) If you are planning your time effectively, those emergencies will not cause as much of a business interruption in your schedule.

Ideally, I have a list of 5 things that I want to get accomplished for the day. I call them, my "big 5."

If you get any of your "big 5" daily tasks completed early, you can then fill in with your longer "to do" list.

You will then feel a greater sense of accomplishment!

In the past, I have made mistakes by having a massive "to do" list, and not defining my "big 5" for the day. A massive "to-do" list can be overwhelming.

Using the 4 box method can help you better prioritize your tasks and your time.

Better managing your time allows you time for the things at home that are important to you, and that will recharge your batteries for work, preventing burnout.

Time management is not easy -- We all have crazy schedules, but if we create these good habits, we can make those hectic schedules more manageable.

We should all be aware of the 80-20 rule.

The "80-20 Rule" - Only 20 percent of the activities on your Daily Action Plan are going to produce 80 percent of your productivity for the day.

If you improve your use of time by just 5%, you will save an average of 8˝ hours a week. That is over 435 hours, or almost 3 weeks a year!

So the next time you find yourself wondering why you do not have a good work/life balance; ask yourself, "Am I Write a Thought Challenge and get published...Who Knows, you may WIN $5,000really managing my time effectively?"

It just might help your home life, and your career.

Just a thought.

Excellence can only be achieved thru repetition because it allows the mind to transcend the action, understand the whole, focus on the vision, and deliver on the intent. With the hurdles being stagnation, daily minutia, and sheer boredom, the path of repetition requires almost daily self-reflection and motivation and desire to see others succeed. Because at the end of the day in order for you to excel others must succeed.
