"Overnight, the environment has shifted in terms of Wal-Mart’s strategy in big cities, in winning over local politicians" In Los Angeles, a Wal-Mart building permit is getting a once-over. In New York, the City Council is investigating a possible land deal with the retailer’s developer in Brooklyn. A state senator in California is pushing for a formal audit of a proposed Wal-Mart in San Diego. And in Boston and its suburbs, residents are pressuring politicians to disclose whether they have received contributions from the company. (Source

Retail sales in April took a dip at a number of retailers going against the grain of the last two months. Weather - tax bills - you name it sales have taken a dip from the high flying last two months. At least in the conversations we've had with a number of retailers across industry segments.

Barnes & Noble forms partnership with Microsoft that puts Barnes & Noble college and digital Nook business under a new subsidiary referred to for now as Newco. Microsoft will make a $300 million investment in Newco at a post-money valuation of $1.7 billion in exchange for an approximately 17.6% equity stake. Barnes & Noble will own approximately 82.4% of the new subsidiary, which will have an ongoing relationship with the company’s retail stores. (Source

With same store sales coming back the Gap may be just that - Back! As one journalist put it - "It looks like the Gap" now! This is a great article for anyone that studies retail and gives a great background on the story of the Gap and how they're rejuvenating the brand. Great read! (Source

J.C. Penney's - 100 boutiques and town center all in one store - "Life style Stores" with "fair and square pricing". All of this is revolutionary. The industry is watching to see whether it works, and so far, the customer is confused and the traffic is minimal in the stores, suggesting that at the current rate it will take a herculean effort to convince the customer that the products are at sharp prices, are timed right and are wanted. Amazon does an about face and will begin collecting sales tax in Texas on July 1st. As part of the agreement, Amazon, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, will invest at least $200 million in Texas and create at least 2,500 jobs, the comptroller’s office said. Amazon has also signed agreements to begin collecting sales tax in several other states, including Nevada, Virginia, Indiana and Tennessee, though these agreements don’t take effect until 2013 or 2014. Sports Authority goes inside with promoting Allan Watters to Senior Vice President of Asset Protection. It's rumored that another one will go inside as well shortly. Obviously it's a great thing to promote from within and speaks volumes about the executive who gets promoted. However it doesn't create another opening in the market - like the domino theory for movement.

Radio Shack's 4th Director of Loss Prevention in 5 years. This can cause most to ask why. But at the end of the day there's always reasonable explanations, like two of them merely going home and couple that with the fact that their having some identity issues and weak sales and one can understand. However previous to this 5 year period they only had 2 senior LP exec's over a 20 year span.

New state statute in Kansas transforms multiple shoplifting convictions to a felony. Convicted shoplifters who earlier were placed on probation or short jail sentences are facing years in state prison based on beefed-up state statutes used by the Shawnee County District Attorney's office. Anyone who commits three shopliftings, which equals a felony, is a super shoplifter or serial shoplifter. According to a Kansas statute, a shoplifter earlier convicted of two misdemeanor shopliftings faces prosecution of felony theft if he or she commits a third shoplifting. (Source

Orlando Home Depot and Dollar Tree stores hit with bogus $50's and $100's. Investigators say the bills the deputies seized are of high quality and appear to have been made by bleaching $5 and $10 bills and replacing the numbers with $50 and $100. The bills easily pass ink tests conducted by most retailers. What gives them away is the security strip that shows 'Five' and 'Ten' for the denomination. Three suspects were arrested and one other is on the loose. (Source

After numerous complaints of illegal surveillance from customers and employees by Ikea executives - French police search the Risk Manager's (the LP exec's) office and home looking for anything to substantiate the allegations. Reportedly background investigations were being conducted on customers who complained and employees working for Ikea have previously filed a complaint against the company for allegedly spying on employees. In addition Ikea allegedly used secret French police files without authorization which is an offense under French law. A series of internal emails published by Le Canard Enchaîné allege that, starting in 2003, the head of security at Ikea’s French operation regularly asked for checks on employees and clients. Checking out over 200 people for criminal records, vehicle registration checks and affiliations with political organizations. Another email reportedly requested information on someone who was thought to have made "anti-globalization remarks" and could even be an "eco-terrorist risk." (Source

Agilence Introduces First-of-its-Kind Store Performance Analysis
& Enterprise-Wide Reporting Offering

Agilence, Information RevealedDallas, T.X. (April 23, 2012) – Agilence, Inc., the leader in point-of-sale (POS) video auditing solutions, today announced Hawkeye 20/20, an enterprise-wide retail intelligence tool providing real-time store performance analysis, video auditing, and advanced reporting capabilities. Representing a new paradigm in retail insight and information sharing, Hawkeye 20/20 informs decisions and improves time-to-action across the enterprise.

Unified Information Viewing & Reporting
Hawkeye 20/20 offers new ways to interact with and utilize the richest data set in retail—POS data—by providing deep analytics and intuitive reporting capabilities that can be utilized by all management levels and departments of a retail organization, from CEO’s to store managers, marketing to asset prevention. Hawkeye 20/20 produces immediate analysis of people, process, promotions, and products to quickly reveal both inefficiencies and opportunities, empowering users to act quickly and confidently regardless of physical location.

"POS data can be utilized to improve nearly every facet of a retail organization," states Derek Rodner, Agilence vice president of product strategy and marketing. “Whether you are a CEO assessing average basket size trends across a chain, a marketer monitoring the success of specific promotions, or a store manager overseeing the performance of individual employees, time is of the essence and detailed accuracy is vital.”

Rich and Rapid Analysis
Gathering both structured and unstructured data, Hawkeye 20/20 captures store sales activity and corresponding video in real-time while offering chain-wide summary data on a daily basis—10 times faster on average than current solutions that take one week or more.

Every User is a Power User
Whether using PC and Apple computers in the office or iOS and Android devices in the field, Hawkeye 20/20 turns every user into a power user. The intuitive web interface ensures that employees at all levels can create vibrant charts and reports on-the-fly with drag-and-drop customization to streamline chain-wide reporting processes.

Multi-faceted Hawkeye 20/20 dashboards provide flexibility and insight to corporate offices, regional and store managers, and employees in the field. They enable users to quickly analyze performance metrics at chain-wide, regional, store, and individual employee levels and even drill down to view video and data corresponding to specific transactions. Personalized dashboards with role-based permissions can be shared across the chain or assigned from management to ensure that objectives are aligned throughout the organization.

Agilence, Information Revealed"Placing such rapid, detailed information into the hands of key decision makers across an organization eliminates guesswork and ensures that important decisions are based upon timely information and analysis at all levels." adds Rodner.

Tip of the Day - Sponsored by Vector Security

One of your primary objectives in any negotiation should be to show a positive, upbeat and an enthusiastic approach to the entire process regardless of the offer. Always wait for the details before accepting any offer because the devil may be in the details. Remember, the hardest thing to negotiate is the benefits because of precedent-setting company standards. If you prepared the employer before the offer with a written (emailed) list of your entire current package in detail, it can make it easier to discuss when it counts the most.
