James Robertson was named Director of Corporate Security for Delaware North Companies in Buffalo, NY.  The former special agent in charge of Buffalo's FBI Office will be leading the Security efforts at this multi-channeled hospitality management and food service organization that has over 200 facilities, including sports arenas, national parks, convention centers, casinos and airports.  (Source

The Texas comptrollers office reports a data breach of 3.5 million Texas residents' personal data, which had been posted on a public server where -- in some cases -- was available for over a year to the public.  The state's attorney general and the FBI have launched an investigation.  (Source

U.S. Senators John Kerry and John McCain introduce a bipartisan bill called the "The Commercial Privacy Bill of Rights Act of 2011."  This bill will be far sweeping and impact how companies collect, store, distribute, and use your personal data.  This will be game changing legislation that will be hotly contested and every lobby group in DC will try to have an impact.  It's about time!  More to follow as this progresses.  (Source

GeckoSystems International Corp. announces the creation of the AscBots in concert with their proprietary "Mobile Robot Solutions for Safety, Security and Service."  This emerging mobile robotics industry may revolutionize and enhance the in-store shoppers experience while reducing the overall operational costs of the retailer.  The AscBot's mobile and intelligent video surveillance systems would "dramatically reduce shrinkage due to internal and external theft," they claim.  "The AscBot would also function as an automated anti-shoplifting observation system for a specific product, single or multiple aisle video surveillance.  This would minimize blind spots typically inherent with fixed video surveillance systems and each AscBot could have one or more video cameras. These mobile cameras can be readily repositioned depending on changing, seasonal displays.  The AscBot would use environment sensory system and distance proximity analyses for "actionable situational awareness" to invoke proprietary AI expert system paradigms for beneficial emergent behaviors.  For example, the AscBot would automatically maintain a preset distance to shoppers per designated area for deterrence and enhanced video surveillance.  The GeckoSavant AI software architecture can be integrated with off board facial recognition software to identify prior shoplifting suspects.  The AscBot can automatically notify store management when probable shoplifting behaviors and/or persons are identified in pre-designated at-risk areas.  The AscBot will readily integrate with existing video over IP surveillance systems."  A must read article!  (Source

China has leaped ahead of the U.S. in cyber spying and the attacks are actually accelerating.   With evidence now in hand, the U.S. knows the Chinese government and, in particular, the military is behind the cyber-attacks.  WikiLeaks actually released cables proving that China's People's Liberation Army have conducted successful systems braches.  Another interesting read.  (Source

Four state T-Mobile cell phone scam busted this week where suspects would steal T-Mobile customer's personal information and than call a T-Mobile store to ask them to add somebody to the victim's plan, and then put a new phone on the plan.  (Source

The FBI and Department of Justice issued warrants for and seized 5 "command and control" servers, 29 domains that were being used to spread the botnet "Coreflood" this week and they filed 13 "John Doe defendants" civil complaints as well.  (Source

A&P looks like they're pulling out of the Maryland and Washington DC markets with putting up 25 Superfresh stores for sale and saying those locations are "outside A&P's core market."  (Source

This month's Stores magazine has a great article in it entitled
"Shaking Hands, Not Fists"  that talks about the efforts eBay's Asset Protection team, led by Paul Jones senior director of global asset protection, has made in working with retailers since his joining eBay 2 years ago and how this collaborative effort is making an impact and helping the retail industry.  A must read!  (Source

Wal-Mart agrees to pay $440,000 to settle a federal harassment lawsuit by 10 employees who say they endured ethnic slurs and derogatory remarks on a daily basis while working at a Sam's Club store in Fresno, Calif.  The plaintiffs first complained to managers in April 2006 who failed to address the harassment and after an EEOC complaint was filed in October 2006, the harasser was, indeed, fired two months later.  This is a textbook example of how harassment allegations must be thoroughly investigated and reacted to immediately by store management and by Loss Prevention.  (Source

Best Buy plans to open 800 mobile-device stores as it shrinks its big-box stores square footage by 10% over the next three to five years.  (Source  also (Source

Meanwhile Wal-Mart actually releases, almost at the same time as Best Buy's above release, that they are in fact "cutting the size" of their electronics departments as well as popular gadgets shrink and making room to add back dropped items like fishing poles, fabric, and full-figure fashions.  The consumer electronics chains have been feeling the pinch of online competitors, a weak economy and declining demand for TVs.  Anther industry sector being changed by the internet, streaming video, smart phones, and technology.  (Source

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) and CargoNet announce the establishment of an exclusive strategic alliance with the shared goal of combating the growing problem of cargo theft across the retail industry.  According to the 2010 United States Cargo Theft Report issued by CargoNet, reported incidences of cargo theft increased by 50 percent compared to 2009. According to the FBI, cargo theft is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States.  (Source

Staples announces it will be selling Barnes & Noble's Nook Color tablet e-reader.  Another big win for Barnes & Noble which creates even more distance between them and Border's.  Barnes & Noble hired an e-commerce executive to run the company in January 2010.  What a move!  (Source

For the first time, a PGA Tour event, the Valero Texas Open, will leverage video surveillance to supplement onsite security staff.  Working with
Axis Communications, the leader in network video, Golf San Antonio implemented an IP-based hosted video surveillance system at the tournament to ensure the safety of all participants.  Leveraging a cloud-based system to avoid disturbing the course landscape, the cameras include features to communicate with the video storage cloud server, store hosted video, as well as provide actionable intelligence for remote monitoring.  They will be using an eight-camera hosted video system being run in the cloud by NAVCO.

PayPal Named Most Innovative Company in Finance

PayPal, a division of eBay Inc has been named the most innovative company in Finance sector, ahead of such giants as Citibank & Intuit, by Fast Company Magazine for leading the charge on digital money. In November 2009, PayPal made the radical move to open up its system to third-party developers and allow them to integrate its payment system into their Web sites, mobile apps, and devices, which enabled all kinds of innovation in the past year. There are currently more than 15,000 developers working with its code, producing apps such as Bling Nation (tap to pay at offline merchants with an add-on sticker); iConcessionStand (order food and merchandise from a mobile device at sporting events); and IndieGoGo (fundraise for ideas or projects, a la Kickstarter). At the end of the day, interviews are based on three basic questions or concerns every executive has about every candidate.  1) How are you going to fit in our culture?  2) Are you really a subject matter expert? and finally 3) What's your plan and how are you going to approach our business and make the biggest impact?  And while certainly there's a number of subtopics and other questions about leadership and conflict management, at the end of the day the senior management team is focused on these top three.  And while many candidates think they don't have the information necessary to answer those questions in a first interview -- they're wrong because it's all about the preparation and the homework you do before that first interview.  And if you do it well you will be able to answer all three.
