With Enhanced Technology, Retailers, FBI Renew Efforts to Combat Retail Crime
According to a joint press release by the retail trade associations, the Law Enforcement Retail Partnership Network (LERPnet), a secure national database that allows retailers to share information to combat organized retail crime (ORC), will be undergoing significant enhancements to its functionality. The ISO Crime Analytics is developing and will manage the new system called LERPnet 2.0. The new version is planned to debut at the NRF LP Conference in June. (Source: nrf.com)

U.K. Retail Sales Plunged Last Month
U.K. retailers suffered their worst fall in sales in at least 16 years in March, driving home the fragility of the economy at a time when the Bank of England is considering raising its key interest rate. The British Retail Consortium said Tuesday that sales fell 1.9% in March from March 2010, the fastest decline since the survey was first conducted in 1995. The fall came even though retailers opened new stores. Same-store sales, which exclude that boost, fell 3.5%. (Source: wsj.com)

Indiana Retailers Press for Online State Sales Tax
Indiana's retail lobby urged state lawmakers Monday to pass an online sales tax provision that they said would level the playing field for businesses in the state and raise hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. But lawmakers gave a lukewarm reception to the proposal likely to spark a backlash from online retailers. A 2007 deal to get Amazon to open its first warehouse in Indiana came with the promise that Indiana lawmakers wouldn't push for an online sales tax, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported. The state leaders brokering the deal also repealed a state law that required companies with a physical presence, including distribution centers, in the state to collect taxes on products used in Indiana. VP of Ops Non-Compete Lawsuit Settled at A&P
A&P last week sought to prevent Vitale -- its former vice president of operations who resigned in February -- from taking a similar role at Stop & Shop citing provisions of a non-compete agreement. According to the suit, Vitale walked away from A&P with physical copies of what the retailer termed its "most sensitive information," including a list of stores on its closure watch list, sales information and details of A&P's competitive and restructuring strategies. Vitale had been an employee of Pathmark for more than 40 years and became a regional vice president of operations for A&P when it acquired Pathmark in 2007. Vitale was the second-highest-ranking operations executive at the company. The parties said they reached an agreement during a hearing in U.S. Court here Friday, according to court documents. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. (Source: supermarketnews.com)

Eight Circuit Court of Appeals, US vs. Rocio Ortiz: Details of a Multi-state ORC Ring
The search revealed eleven large black plastic garbage bags containing 3,442 items weighing 1,195 pounds. Within the bags, the officer found designer clothing with price tags and anti-theft devices still attached, two suitcases, and a bag containing chocolate, purses, watches and perfume, all later valued at $105,616.29. The departments will include new fixtures in a dedicated space and will give customers access to these popular cosmetics brands at the mall, the new concept will now appear in over 100 stores and Sears.com. These refreshed beauty departments will feature products from such brands as L'Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon, CoverGirl, Sally Hansen, Essie and Nicole by OPI. Merchant Analytic Solutions, LLC (MAS) and IDM Software announce Strategic Alliance to Deliver Next Generation Business Intelligence to Retailers

Merchant Analytic Solutions, LLC ("MAS"), a unit of Hilco Trading, LLC, announced it has entered into a strategic alliance with IDM Software ("IDM") to provide retail executives, worldwide, with a next-generation business intelligence solution designed to drive improvements in inventory performance, shrink, margin leakage, customer satisfaction, vendor management, risk counter measures, SKU rationalization, supply chain optimization, and predictive modeling.

The new solution combines the MAS "pm2 -- predictive modeling and profit management strategy" with the IDM "Loss Manager Train of Thought" software application in one user-friendly, multi-level, unified program.

According to MAS Chief Operating Officer and former Vice President of CVS/Caremark, Ernie Deyle, "Pressures on costs and retail price inflation, along with increased risk variables within an organization that can affect shareholder value, make it imperative CFOs explore all untapped opportunities within their data to drive net profit."

Mr. Deyle added, "Successful software tools today must have not only the "potential" to do great things with data, they must be underpinned by a proven strategy to both effectively identify opportunity and leverage it through the closure of gaps in underlying processes, labor and technology. The program, jointly developed by MAS and IDM, provides the optimal solution to accurately predict patterns, monitor and anticipate user needs, isolate and quantify events at the most granular level, provide a road map to mitigate that risk, and ensure the action taken is effective and sustainable."

MAS is a global leader in retail profit optimizing business intelligence tactics. The MAS pm2 profit turn-around program is designed around proprietary algorithms and data assessment techniques to identify sales reducing activity ("SRA") -- the root causes of profit loss -- within a retail enterprise. MAS pm2 provides retailers with the capabilities to execute customized improvement strategies and countermeasures to mitigate losses, and effectively measure and predict future performance.

IDM "Train of Thought Analysis" software enables a retailer to analyze data in a new way that supports their natural investigative process. Results that used to take days and weeks to produce can now be achieved in minutes and hours; all without the need to call upon the assistance of valuable and scarce internal IT time or costly vendor resources. Sean Manion, IDM Vice President of Sales and Operations, North America stated, "We're very excited to be working with MAS. Our objective is to add value across the retailerís enterprise and make their existing teams more productive. The alliance between our companies will bring considerable returns to our clients."

MAS Chief Executive Officer and former President of K-Mart Operations, Donald W. Keeble, said, "In partnering with IDM Software, MAS is able to further round out its core analytical offerings and provide a fully actionable, profit improvement program, designed by retail executives who have a history of providing direct shareholder value and improving overall financial strength. In IDM Software we found a partner who understands retail and has a proven solution that overcomes the inherent constraints of traditional EBR tools."

eBay Recognized by Retailers For Collaborative Efforts on ORC Fight

Retailers work with eBay to thwart sales of stolen merchandise as outlined in the most recent NRF Stores Magazine. Someone once said that if all the people of Earth had a common enemy, there would be no war between nations: Everyone would come together to vanquish the threat. As it turns out, most (if not all) retailers have a common nemesis -- and it's the same one that victimizes the world's largest e-commerce site, eBay -- organized retail criminals. Retailers like CVS Caremark, The Kroger Co. and The Home Depot have been helping eBay strengthen its retail asset protection program, PROACT, partly by developing sophisticated filters to identify suspicious sellers so they could be investigated before being allowed to post. eBay currently has more than two dozen complex PROACT filters, most focused on products that retailers report are at high risk for theft. eBay Senior Director of Global Asset Protection outlined his mandate upon joining the brand 2 years ago was simply "to work cooperatively and in unprecedented ways with retailers, provided the issues were real crime issues."  The primary objective, says Jones, is "to keep dishonest sellers and stolen goods off our site." Vector Security Takes Top Honors for Industryís Best Website at 2011 SAMMY Awards

Vector Security was honored at the 2011 SAMMY Awards held Tuesday, April 5th in Las Vegas, NV, by capturing top honors for the industry's best website. The 2011 SAMMYs -- which in total received over 125 entries by the electronic security industry's top companies in a variety of advertising and marketing categories -- honors the best sales and marketing achievements produced by the industry. The event is hosted by Security Sales & Integration magazine, and this year marked the 15th consecutive year SSN hosted this competition.

According to Mike Grady, Vector Security's Executive Vice President, and David Merrick, Vector's Vice President of Marketing, the award reflects Vector's commitment to improve the company's position in a number of Internet-based marketing and public relations venues. "While we've had a company website since 1999, this latest revision of our site was a quantum leap from where we've been in the past," says Grady. Merrick adds that the website and other Internet-based marketing initiatives are part of the company's broader goal to capture more attention. "Since releasing our new site in the 4th quarter of 2010,
we've seen a marked increase in viewers who come to our website; but that's not the only Internet-based marketing initiative we're pursuing," adds Merrick. "We're combining that with improved social media presence, to include Facebook, Linked In, Twitter and a Vector Security You Tube channel. Additionally, we are developing aligned Facebook pages for Vector Security branch offices in larger geographic markets, and plan to soon add Wikipedia pages."

Vector's web improvement plans for the balance of 2011 include taking steps to further improve SEO performance numbers in over 80 geographic markets in which the company does business, adding RSS feeds and perhaps blogging capacity, and reformatting the website for optimal viewing on handheld devices. "As more and more people value the ability to access and navigate through websites from smart phones and web-enabled handheld devices, marketers will need to reformat their sites to allow that to happen. Otherwise they will diminish their ability to impact those who prefer using the fast-growing handheld information access devices."

The listing of website improvements Vector Security submitted to the 2011 SAMMY judges included the following:

Best Website Design: Vector Security website 2010 redesign

During 2010, Vector Security made significant improvements to our existing corporate website. First introduced in late 1999, Vector Security's initial website was replaced in August of 2006 and then replaced once more in August 2010. The design on our newest website version includes the following features:

Website Design Features
􀂃 A robust search engine optimization platform was developed for higher ranking performance
􀂃 The development includes an online reputation management platform for monitoring purposes
􀂃 The site utilizes Google Analytics at all levels
􀂃 Unique "Printable" pages and "Email a Friend" modules populate all pages

Goal 1: Additions to Web Content: One of the major goals of this update was to increase the level and quality of our web content, especially as it relates to providing consultative information and advice to both prospective residential and commercial buyers.

Goal 2: Increase Customer Communications Capabilities: The new website design also allows our customers to communicate requests and contact us for a variety of services, including scheduling service calls, system inspections, system moves, applying for insurance premium discounts, submitting referrals, requesting appointments, data changes or ACH billing needs.

Goal 3: Introduce Career Opportunities: Our third goal was to better use our website to attract new people to Vector Security and Vector Security Patrol. In order to do so, we offer prospective employees the ability to view job opportunities, submit applications and resumes, and download job descriptions. The career section also presents the individual career histories of nine VSI employees, who reflect highly successful long-term careers in sales, customer service, central station, installation, service and uniformed guard services.

We're proud to educate our prospective customers as to the importance of reducing false alarms and dispatches, and to assure them that we are working tirelessly to continue our efforts.

Seems like the longer a process goes, the harder it is for everyone to stay focused on the initial purpose and maintain the enthusiasm as when it began.  Time and difficulty have their impact, but maintaining the passion and enthusiasm is up to each person.  With the last step seemingly the easiest, it is usually the most critical step of all and many tend to approach it as if it is a mere formality when, in reality, that last step can be the biggest and, if you do not watch out, it could be a step right off the cliff.
