Shoplifting is on the rise even in the Midwest where Hy-Vee stores have added more Loss Prevention store coverage calling it an "obligation to all our customers."  (Source thegazette.com)

P.F. Chang's division, Pei Wei Asian Diners, a 170 -store chain, had eight stores closed down by the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office after raiding four locations and finding workers with stolen ID's following an identity-theft investigation.  (Source azcentral.com)

Rumors have it that Nike has named a new Director of LP and Party City may have an offer out on their Director of Loss Prevention position.

The cost of data breaches has risen from $700,000 in 2008 to $1.2 million in 2010 according to a recent McAfee study and almost half the companies surveyed by McAfee had at least one small data breach in the past year.  They're warning that the recent Epsilon breach may be only the tip of the iceberg and that the new cybercrime is organized cybercrime gangs prowling corporate networks stealing a company's crown jewels -- proprietary data and trade secrets that can later be sold for big bucks on the cyber black market.  (Source csmonitor.com)

Borders is leaving their current corporate location in Ann Arbor, MI, and moving to cheaper space in southeast Michigan.  They're also in negotiations on 633 store leases after filing for bankruptcy on Feb. 16th.  Closing 226 so far, how will the lease negotiations impact further store closings?  (Source freep.com)

For full-time retail workers, the median annual wage is $20,510 which is $5 less than the U.S. median wage for all occupations for 2009.  The workforce has changed over the years and now 78% of retail workers are 25 or older and more than 33% are their family's sole provider.  The retail industry has accounted for "almost half of the recent job growth," however, "pay has shrunk" by 4% adjusting for inflation to a median hourly wage of $9.74.  (Source tennessean.com)

"As many as a quarter of all shops in the UK could be redundant over the next few years" and be gone, with the economic climate driving this radical change because of 4 factors: the rising costs of operating stores; the increasing costs of raw materials that are impacting gross margins; the ever-more competitive retail environment as a result of supermarkets targeting non-food; and more fundamentally, the rapid growth of e-commerce.  The UK oftentimes offers us a snapshot of what's happening or could happen in North America, only at a more rapid pace.  With the cultures and populations so similar, their studies and predictions can shed light on possibly our business as well.  (Source theretailbulleting)

A new report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shows a huge increase in cyber-squatting with the retail industry being the #1 target.  IP theft is a quick way for cyber-squatters to hold retailers up for ransom and some get hit time and time again.  Enforcing your IP rights will ensure your brand is not seen as a soft touch and taking action sends a clear message to the cyber-squatting community.  Just another way the cyber world is impacting the retail industry worldwide.  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

Even with Dish TV buying Blockbuster, one analyst says "Dish has zero retail capability at present, and therefore lacks the scale or synergies to benefit from the operation of Blockbuster retail stores."  But some analysts think Dish will keep the brand in kiosks and their physical stores.  We'll all see soon enough.  (Source Associated Press)

Have You Got the Time? (Just a thought.)

We've all heard the adage that "time is money," and for those of us in the business community, that is true. As managers, we all strive to do a better job of managing our time, and managing the time of our associates. We have all felt the frustration of having to deal with people wasting our time, or with having somebody else interfere with the management of our time. Managers with good time management skills will avoid the latter by being conscious of how they affect the time management of others. (As a young department manager, I once had a store manager who always asked what I was doing whenever he called or paged me. One moody day, I challenged him on why he always asked me that, and if he thought I was slacking. Surprised, he told me he did so out of respect for my time, and always wanted to determine if what he wanted me for was more important than what I was working on.) Managers who are indifferent to their associates' or peers' time management will tend to have morale and productivity issues related to the frustrations of wasted time.

From a business standpoint, mismanaged time and wasted time do cost money. However, what we as humans tend to forget is the personal side. Time is the one resource we have that we can not truly measure in terms of loss (no one truly knows when their time will come to an end), and it is the one truly non-renewable resource in nature. Time is inexorable; it stops for no one, slows for no one and speeds up for no one. Time is manageable in terms of its value, but not controllable. Time is an abstract omnipotent force of nature that brings all of the other mighty forces to their knees. Our personal management of time is not measured in the quantity of our lives, but in the quality of our lives. For many of us, our professional and personal lives inevitably merge and intertwine, and the challenge becomes the "work/life balance" of our time. Our careers fuel the comforts we provide our families, so one could say that time spent is valuable. However, the time we spend nurturing our family and personal relationships is priceless; and while quantity is certainly desirable, it is the quality of that time that really matters most. To waste that time is to squander the most valuable resource one has in life.

The age of the email has truly changed the way humans communicate both personally and professionally, with emails becoming that fast pitch right down the middle and stinging the catcher's hand when they least expect it, and oftentimes first thing in the morning before you've even had time to drink your first cup of coffee.   It has almost become an accepted practice for many to compose their negative or conflicting thoughts about the days' events or conversations and push that send button after everyone has left so they don't have to face the receiver and so that they can almost act innocent the next day as if some imposter sent it the night before.  It's almost as if the email world has offered some sort of anonymity to senders, even when it comes from their own address.   More on this tomorrow!

Just a thought from one who's caught quite a few fast balls,
Gus Downing
