With the release of a new U.S. Department of Homeland Security FREE online training program titled Active Shooter, What You Can Do, the National Retail Federation updated their Active Shooter Whitepaper.  The training is targeted to reach a broad range of individuals, including managers and associates. While individuals respond instinctually to crisis situations, these materials are intended to help associates be prepared to respond if an active shooter situation erupts. The sale of counterfeit goods accounts for 8% of China's total Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to some estimates by economists.  And while it's difficult to measure the true amount of sales in the U.S. for counterfeit goods, the Customs & Border Protection unit of the DHS released a ranking for 2009 of the top 10 counterfeit items by seizure amount.  1. Footwear - Value: $99.8 million - 38% of total seizures - By far the greatest amount of any product. By value, 98% of counterfeit footwear originated in China. For the fourth year in a row footwear was the top commodity seized.  2. Consumer Electronics - $31.8 million - 12% - China produces most of these electronics, with approximately $18.5 million worth of seizures. Consumer electronics are also the most popular illegitimate product coming out of Hong Kong, second only to China. They make up 40% of all counterfeit goods intercepted from Hong Kong. 3. Handbags/Wallets/Backpacks- $21.5 million - 8% - China exported $19.5 million of these goods.   4. Apparel - $21.5 million - 8% -  The amount exported from China $17.9 million.  5. Watches/Parts - $15.5 million - 6% - The majority of these items, over $7.9 million almost 50%, came from Hong Kong.  (Source dailyfinance.com)

Blockbuster is closing another 186 stores bringing the total store closures to 1,145 since filing for bankruptcy.  The court approved procedures for an auction of Blockbuster which they've already received one offer of $290 million.  They'll use the funds to pay the movie studios who have agreed to continue shipping.  If this organization falls, expect to see the movie studios and the streaming video players come to a new game changing arrangement.  (Source retailingtoday.com) 

Online advertised jobs for the first three months of 2011 have risen about 200,000 monthly and signaling good news compared to the last 3 years.  (Source chainstoreage.com)

According to H&M's CEO, the increased cost of cotton was the number 1 reason the company's profit fell 30%.  They held tight on price and absorbed the cost to remain value driven.  This is the first retailer to report such an impact and won't be the last.  This one dynamic will be the number 1 reason why many LP budgets won't loosen up this year.  (Source Associated Press)

Google agrees to adopt a comprehensive privacy program to settle FTC federal charges that it violated its own privacy policy when it launched the Buzz last year and automatically created public circles of friends for Gmail users with their most frequent Gmail contacts without asking permission.   Users complained that they didn't want all their email contacts -- which could include ex-spouses, doctors, employers and recruiters -- to become part of a social network for everyone to see.  (Source Associated Press)

J.C. Penney Co.'s Chairman and Chief Executive, Myron E. Ullman III, received compensation worth $12.3 million in 2010, a 48% increase from 2009.  His base salary was $1.5 million, a performance-based cash bonus of $2.56 million, received $6.4 million in stock awards and $1.59 million in stock options.  (Source Associated Press)
