John Clark was named Vice President, Asset Management for the Comex Group, a leading paint and coatings manufacturer and distributor from Canada to Mexico with 3,300 locations.  John is a former Sports Authority Director, Corporate Asset Protection and spent 13 years there in various AP roles.

The Omaha, Neb., "metro-area retail coalition," which was brought together to fight ORC and has been meeting for over a year now, has been successful in producing "faster case closure" with local law enforcement.  Comprised of about a dozen local and national retailers and four law enforcement agencies with monthly meetings, the group is "going strong" and has been very effective at creating a team approach in the area that's helped combat the problem and increase apprehensions.  These coalitions are popping up all over the nation in cities and towns most thought wouldn't have a serious ORC problem.   But as we're all finding, ORC is in every town regardless how you define the term.  (Source omaha.com)

A new annual report to Congress from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget shows cyber incidents affecting government information systems was up 39% in 2010 and hit 107,439 cyber attacks.  (Source govinfosecurity.com)

Today, the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee will be starting their hearings on the economic costs of cyber attacks and cyber crimes.  The committee's chairman, Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller, said "Every day, cyber thieves are stealing our identities, our money, our business innovations and our national security secrets.  They are trying to rob us of our economic and global competitiveness, and right now we're not stopping them. There is too much at stake and no time to waste. I am committed to getting a cyber-security bill passed this year."  This will be interesting to watch as it develops and the nations' retailers should be involved in its creation and development.  Let's hope all the trade associations are actively engaged.  (Source yahoo.com)

Dollar General is "formulating" their Nevada store expansion now and will use it as a "launching pad" into California.  With over 10,000 stores now and a well-developed Loss Prevention department, this will mean new LP jobs on the west coast and probably even a Divisional LP Directorship on the west coast if the expansion goes well.  Just having picked up Scott Springer from the Gap for their Midwest Divisional LP Directorship, they've built a strong team.  This is a retailer to watch over the next few years for job growth.  (Source supermarketnews.com

The potential largest sex discrimination suit in U.S. history is being heard today by the Supreme Court where at least 500,000 women are claiming Wal-Mart favors men over women in pay and promotions.  The court is hearing arguments today on whether or not this 10-year-old battle, that could cost Wal-Mart billions, can proceed as a class action suit.  The women suing Wal-Mart say the company would have no reason to change its practices if it succeeds in forcing them to sue individually.  Class actions create pressure on businesses to settle claims and create the potential for large judgments.

Cybercriminals are taking a page from the software-as-a-service playbook: they're now selling exploit kits complete with hosting services, with customers paying for the length of time the exploits are actively infecting computers.  With over 8,000 legitimate websites that have been hacked and are indeed pulling exploits, this is becoming a growing business model and only costing $100 to $200 a month for the hacker.  (Source csoonline.com)

Yesterday's announcement of Charming Shoppes closing 240 stores, in this writer's opinion only, probably won't translate into the loss of any Loss Prevention positions as they are already rather thin in their ranks in the field, at least let's hope they don't lose any LP jobs.

Kohl's is opening its 12th distribution center in Edgewood, Md. this July that will fulfill online orders and give Kohl's three DC's serving online customers.  With a 50% increase in online revenue last year, Kohl's is growing that business and creating about 1,200 new jobs which will include a few LP positions as well.  (Source Associated Press)

With falling same store sales and continued losses, Hot Topic's CEO and their chief merchant have left the company.  (Source Associated Press)

Internal fraud controls aren't fire-and-forget. Smart collaboration and ongoing improvement will help keep fraud in check.  Here's a great article on the basics and on how senior management's involvement and support are critical in establishing the "tone at the top."  (Source csoonline.com)

eBay Inc. Acquires GSI Commerce Will Enhance Retail Partnerships

eBay Inc. agreed to pay $2.4 billion for GSI Commerce, an online retail and marketing company, in a move that could help the online auction site compete with Amazon. The purchase of GSI "will significantly strengthen our ability to connect buyers and sellers worldwide," John Donahoe, EBay's president & chief executive said. "Combined with EBay Marketplaces and PayPal, we believe GSI will enhance our position as the leading strategic global commerce partner of choice for retailers and brands of all sizes." "We intend to lead the next generation of commerce innovation. With more than 180 customers across 14 merchandise categories, GSI has long-term commerce services relationships with leading retailers and brands. We expect that GSI will benefit from eBay's global platform and technology capabilities, and its clients will be able to leverage eBay Marketplaces and PayPal services. With eBay, PayPal, GSI and our global platform capabilities, we are focused on delivering new ways for retailers and brands of all sizes -- from sole proprietors to large merchants -- to drive innovation, engage customers and help people shop anytime, anywhere and on any device." Donahoe added.  Click here for article

Listening and hearing what your internal customers are saying is critical if you expect to be successful with any program or project.  Oftentimes, the speed of delivery negatively impacts the process of success and keeps us from hearing exactly what we need to hear when we so passionately roll out our programs and projects.  After testing and reviewing our plans and being so committed to our beliefs, we oftentimes don't hear our retail partners once we've committed ourselves to a specific path.  And sometimes it's not what they say that's important as much as what they don't say or as much as what they quietly say beneath their breath or maybe even how they react.  Whenever you're rolling out a new program or project, use those interrogative skills, in a positive way, and read the reactions of your internal customers because they will determine the success regardless of how good it is.

Just a Thought
Gus Downing
