FEMA National Preparedness/National Level Exercise 2011
In light of the catastrophic events in Japan over this past weekend, it reminds us how fragile we are against Mother Nature.  Our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

We can only hope that such a devastating event would never occur here in the United States, but are we prepared? As Loss Prevention and Safety professionals, business continuity and emergency evacuation planning might be a topic of review for the week. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) with the support of  the National Retail Federation/Joe LaRocca are planning a National Level Exercise to prepare for a catastrophic event.   On May 16-20, 2011, FEMA will conduct a test of our current framework, testing how communities, states, the federal government, private sectors, and nongovernmental partners work together to coordinate national response; describes specific authorities and best practices for managing incidents; and builds upon the National Incident Management System (NIMS), which provides a consistent template for managing incidents.  Click here for info on National Level Exercise 2011 and how you can participate from an LP standpoint.

Joint eBay & Retail Investigation Leads to Jail Sentence

A Florida man was sentenced to more than five years in federal prison for his part in a theft ring that has stolen more than 25,000 items from retail stores. eBay PROACT investigators assisted a number of retailers and law enforcement into the investigation of this multi-state retail stolen goods matter and the subsequent sale of the merchandise on the internet. Samuel Perry Beihn was sentenced this week to 69 months in prison and 3 years' probation for operating a theft ring that stole hand tools and power tools from stores along Interstate 95 and Interstate 81 from Florida to Pennsylvania. The scam involved taking an item out of a large box at the store, such as a shop vac or grill, and filling the box with small items such as tools with value exceeding the price of the item removed from the box. While most people try to avoid risk and corporate America actually labels it to be avoided at all cost, ultimately life is filled with it.  Risk taking is something everyone is faced with and without it life would become somewhat stagnate.  Taking a risk once in awhile is a healthy thing.  It pushes people to do sometimes their most creative work and reach new levels.  The problem becomes the fear of risk and hesitation.  It seems like our society has become so risk-avoidance driven that people are applauded for not taking it, when in actuality it is those who take risks that pave the road for all others to travel.  As Joseph Campbell, a famous American mythologist, once said it is the darkest path in the woods that holds the most treasure.  Next time you're faced with taking a risk, give it some thought.  Who knows, your career may take off!

Good Luck
