Office Depot reaches a settlement with San Francisco and is to pay $4.25 million over allegations the company overcharged for office supplies.  A 2009 audit by the city controller found that Office Depot deprived the city of an estimated $5.75 million in discounts mandated under its five-year $18 million contract.  While Office Depot strongly disputes the audits conclusions, their spokesman said it was "a reasonable compromise."  (Source cbslocal.com)

A man was shot to death Tuesday morning in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store in Omaha Nebraska.  Police chased a vehicle apparently involved and apprehended one suspect with another escaping on foot.  The five local schools were locked down during the incident with neighbors hearing two sets of shots fired and police going door to door looking for the second suspect.  (Source omaha.com)

A judge in A&P's bankruptcy case allowed one section of a proposed bonus plan that would give 140 salaried executives the ability to earn up to 100% of their base salaries if A&P could reach targeted levels of same store sales and merchandise margins during a seven-month period beginning this month.  The executives include the company's chief information officer, senior vice presidents, vice presidents, senior directors, directors, district managers, and senior category managers.  However, the judge rejected the second part of the bonus plan that would pay up to 175% bonuses for three "Tier 1" executive vice presidents.  The CEO and chief restructuring officer elected not to participate in the plan and general counsel voluntarily dropped out of the Tier 1 group this week.  (Source supermarketnews.com)

Sunday night in Statesville, NC, an 83-year-old Wal-Mart greeter ends his shift, goes to his car - gets a gun - goes into the garden center - fires shots in the air - holds the gun to an employee's head and forces him to remove the money from the register.  Obviously, he was charged with armed robbery and discharging a firearm inside city limits.  (Source wistv.com)

One of the leaders of the computer hackers group known as Anonymous is threatening new attacks on major U.S. corporations and government officials as part of a "cyberwar" that they feel is their obligation to do in the "service of civil disobedience."   The group is the target of a major FBI investigation that has included dozens of subpoenas and raids on the homes of suspected members.  This group took credit for crashing the websites of MasterCard and Visa after the Wikileaks service was cut off and they claim they shut down the government websites of Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya as well.  (Source msn.com)

eBay Supports Law Enforcement Leading to Conviction in Stolen Goods Case

eBay investigators in the United Kingdom (UK) supported an active investigation into the sale of stolen goods that led to the arrest, conviction and order to repay the courts 95,000 Euro (approx $130,000). Over the past two years, investigators with global asset protection team provided law enforcement with eBay and PayPal records along with detailing timeline of events via a certified witness statement that was utilized during court proceedings. The suspect was charged with the two shoplifting offences, possession of the criminal property and money laundering between 2005 & 2009 for selling stolen goods on e-Bay and thereby converting goods into money. In April 2010, he pleaded guilty to the shoplifting charges, possession of criminal property, and money laundering to the tune of 45,000. He was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for the money laundering offence and six months for each of the other three offences to run concurrently. Click here for article

Denny Dansik, Corporate Manager, ORC, The Kroger Co.

Los Angeles Area Organized Retail Crimes Association (LAAORCA) 2nd Annual Conference this past Feb. 24 was a great success!

Here's a short note of thanks from Denny Dansik who's been very involved on a national level with the ORC efforts.

LAAORCA Conference 2011 -- what an event!   The goal of exceeding expectations on LAAORCA's Conference from last year seemed unlikely.  I don't think anyone thought it would have grown in 1 year to the venue it has become with in excess of 850 law enforcement and retail partners sharing a common interest -- Organized Retail Crime.  LAAORCA and the Conference have long-term goals and in a short period have become a "Best in Class" organization for law enforcement and retailers.  Not only does this event attract local law enforcement from the Southern California area, but others, such as the Las Vegas Police Department, are attracted by LAAORCA's Real Time crime notification program and insight that is gained through law enforcement's partnership with the retail sector.

Joe LaRocca

Senior Asset Protection Advisor, NRF

Thanks, Joe, for all your efforts!

To be able to host an event such as the LAAORCA Conference takes vision, dedication, persistence and a great deal of time.  When the conference comes together, we are all amazed that the pieces of the puzzle fit perfectly.  We realize how important it is to see colleagues we haven't seen for awhile, or to collaborate with peers on the common ideas, or to realize there are better ways to achieve our ORC goals within our departments or companies. Whatever is gained, we realize "somebody put a lot of work and thought into this conference."

While many were involved in bringing the LAAORCA Conference to a reality, there are core individuals whose passion, vision and dedication are noticed, but we sometimes take these traits for granted.  We know if these core individuals are involved in a project, in this case the 2nd Annual LAAORCA Conference, the project will exceed expectations.  We all know these individuals will finagle a way for admission for the conference to be minimal, or even better, at no charge.  There are many law enforcement partners and retailers who join forces to make certain the LAAORCA Conference continues to be a mainstay on everyone's calendar.

But at the "core" of LAAORCA and the LAAORCA Conference, you will find three visionaries, three key individuals who have that passion, three respected leaders who drive the concept of combating ORC and three individuals who we all know well and sometimes take their time for granted.  These three individuals are Captain Bill Williams and Kent Oda, LAPD Commercial Crimes Division, and Joe LaRocca, Senior Advisor, NRF.  From everyone who attends the LAAORCA Conference -- Thank You!

We would also like to recognize and thank Joe LaRocca for all his efforts and contributions to the industry thru his tireless efforts at the NRF.  He has truly made a difference, unified the industry, and brings an un-paralleled level of professionalism to everything he does.   Great Job Joe!

"Something just told me it was the wrong thing to do -- it didn't feel right -- I didn't have a good feeling about it."  The subconscious is a very strong silent partner we all have and oftentimes it speaks to us in these phrases.  The problem becomes when we over-think things and muffle the most powerful partner we have -- our own minds.  Or we allow our closest confidant, our closest friend, or even at times our mentor to change or alter our true feelings.  Coming to the right decision with any big issue is difficult and certainly we need the input of our trusted inner circle, and our spouse, but at the end of the day you're the one living with the consequence of your decision and you alone are responsible for it.  When the bird on your shoulder is talking, make sure you listen because most mistakes are made when that voice has been muffled.
