Police Officers in Highest Injury Job in U.S.
Significant National Increase Trend in
Assault-Related Injuries For Police Officers
Research review: Police officer nonfatal injuries on the rise
Cops are three times more likely to sustain a nonfatal injury at work than
all other U.S. workers, and injuries from assaults are on the rise
Much is known about on-duty fatalities among police officers; however, data on
non-fatal injuries is nearly non-existent.
This month, the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published an article in
the "American Journal of Preventive Medicine" on non-fatal injuries among law
enforcement officers that shows that officers are three times more likely to
sustain a nonfatal injury at work than all other U.S. workers.
This study is the first to look at both intentional and unintentional nonfatal
injuries among officers on a national scale.
Much of the increase was due to the high number and corresponding significant
increase of assault-related injuries. In fact, this is the first study to
demonstrate an upward national trend in assault-related injuries among police
officers. Our main findings are:
About 669,100 law enforcement officers were treated in emergency departments
across the nation for non-fatal injuries between 2003 and 2014.
The overall non-fatal injury rate of 635 per 10,000 full-time equivalents was
three times higher than all other U.S. workers rate (213 per 10,000 full-time
equivalents).
The nonfatal injury trend for law enforcement officers increased across the
12-year period and this was in contrast with the trend for all other U.S.
workers, which significantly decreased.
Assault-related injury rates significantly increased about 10% annually from
2003 to 2011.
The leading causes of injury were:
Assaults & violent acts (36%),
Body motion injuries such as overexertion from running and repetitive motion
injuries (15%),
Transportation incidents (14%), and
Contact with objects and equipment (13%).

Dr. Pepper Executive pleads guilty - $1.7M
Fraudulent Invoices Scam
A national sales executive for Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., Michael Lynch, pleaded
guilty Tuesday to submitting more than $1.7 million worth of fraudulent invoices

fraudulent invoices to Dr. Pepper that totaled $1,716,949 for several services
that his fake company had billed.
The services included providing promotional signs and banners, delivering of
sample products to retail stores and offering discount prices to retail stores.
Lynch will be sentenced in June and could face up to 20 years in prison, as well
as a fine of $250,000 for wire fraud. Lynch may also face up to 3 years
imprisonment and a $100,000 for filing a false tax return.

More Positive Press Coming Out of Macy's
Macy's doubles down on stores with 'Growth 50' strategy
"Growth 50," a new plan to bring experiments from its Woodbridge Township, NJ

Parkland
School Shooting - The Retail Impact
Dick's Sporting Goods Responds to Parkland Shootings
Will No Longer Sell Assault Rifles & High Capacity Magazines
Must Be 21 to Buy A Firearm in their Stores
DICK'S Sporting Goods will no longer sell assault-style rifles like the one used
in the Parkland, Fla. shooting on Feb. 14 that killed 17 people. The sports
retailer will stop selling these type of guns, "also referred to as modern
sporting rifles," at any of its 35 Field & Stream stores. The retailer had
already removed them from all Dick's stores after the Sandy Hook, CT massacre,
the company said.
In a statement issued Feb. 28, CEO Edward Stack revealed that DICK'S had sold
a shotgun to the Parkland shooter, Nikolas Cruz, in November 2017. "It was
not the gun, nor the type of gun, he used in the shooting," said Stack. "But it
could have been."
DICK'S will:
● No longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age,
regardless of local age limit laws
●
No longer sell high capacity magazines; and
● Will not sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons
to fire more rapidly
Walmart Stopped Selling assault-style weapons
in 2015
DICK'S is not the first retailer to stop selling certain types of firearms.
In August 2015, Walmart announced it would no longer sell assault-style rifles
in its U.S. stores, but the company attributed the decision to lower
consumer demand for the weapons rather than any political stance.
Dick's CEO Urges Lawmakers to Enact 'Common-Sense' Gun Laws
Dick's
Sporting Goods CEO Edward Stack "implored" elected officials to enact
"common-sense gun reform" that includes:
● A ban on assault-style firearms;
● Raising the minimum purchase age to 21;
● A ban on high capacity magazine and bump stocks;
● Requiring universal background checks that include relevant
mental health information and previous interactions with the law;
● A complete universal database of those banned from buying
firearms; and
● Closing the private sale and gun show loophole that waives
the necessity of background checks.

FedEx, UPS Trade Barbs Over NRA Ties After Florida Shooting
FedEx Corp. on Tuesday trumpeted that the gun-rights group uses United Parcel

company said by email, underlining the last two words of the sentence.
UPS responded quickly. Yes, it has a shipping deal with the NRA, it said. But it

company said Monday that it would maintain its discounts for businesses and

7 Key Stats that Size Up the 2017 Cybercrime
Deluge
11X Increase in Overall Malware Volume According to the Cisco 2018 Annual
Cybersecurity Report, there was an elevenfold increase in overall malware volume
last year.
Annual Vulnerabilities Count Up 31% From 2016 to 2017 the number of newly
discovered vulnerabilities per year shot up by just about 31%, according to the
2017 Vulnerability Trends report from Risk Based Security. That's a marked
increase after only moderate rises in discovered flaws the prior three years.
Zero-Day Vulnerabilities Up 98% Zero-day vulnerabilities saw a
particularly steep rise in 2017. According to Trend Micro's 2017 Annual Security
Roundup, they nearly doubled. In particular, SCADA-related zero-days saw serious
traction, rising 146%.
Ransomware Families Up 32%, Total Ransomware Threats Down 41% Trend Micro
reports that the overall growth in this category finally reached a plateau
midyear last year. Interestingly, as this type of attack is deprecated and
commoditized on the black market, the number of families continues to diversify.
So overall threats went down, but the variety of them went up. Amid all this
noise, the WannaCry variant dominated the landscape - making up 57% of all
ransomware detected last year.
88% of All Malicious Payloads in December RCE Attacks Were Cryptomining
Malware Even as the prevalence of ransomware has gone down, attackers have
latched onto the new hotness in cybercriminal moneymaking: cryptomining. Trend
Micro noted that last fall coin mining-based malware detections surpassed
WannaCry ransomware activity. Meanwhile, Imperva researchers put a finer point
on the issue with an eye-raising stat. Almost 90% of the malicious payloads they
detected in remote code-execution attacks in December were cryptomining malware.
It Took 4 Days for 1 IoT Botnet to Increase 53 Timex According to
researchers with Fortinet - and elsewhere - IoT botnets are on the significant
uptick. One example of this is the rise in Reaper, a variant evolved from Mirai
that was able to boost its volume over the course of four days last October from
50,000 to 2.7 million nodes.
Annual Cybercrime Estimates are Nearing $600B The Center for Strategic
and International Studies (CSIS) and McAfee just teamed up to try to peg a
number that shows just how much cybercrime is costing the global economy.
Accounting for intellectual property losses, online fraud and financial crimes,
financial manipulation, opportunity costs, post-breach mitigation, cyber
insurance, and reputational damage, the overall estimate adds up to as much as
$600 billion. That's a $150 billion increase over 2014, which was the last time
CSIS drew up similar estimates. darkreading.com
Key Takeaways: Retail Threat Briefing Webinar
with R-CISC
In the era of Amazon and mainstream e-commerce, every online retailer has to
deliver a compelling user experience across their web and mobile channels while
protecting customers from cyberattacks and fraud. Recently, Shape collaborated
with R-CISC to share attack data and analysis of the most prevalent threats for
retailers and best practices on how Top 10 Retailers are mitigating these
threats.
Watch the
threat briefing video here or read a summary of the key points below.
Analysis of Top Online Retail Threats
Credential Stuffing
Credential stuffing is responsible for more than 99% of all retail account
takeovers (ATOs). In one attack on a top 50 retailer, Shape identified over 13.8
million automated posts against a login endpoint, using 80,000 unique IP's,
sustained for 10 days. Prior to blocking, this retailer identified 328,000
account takeovers.
Gift Card Cracking
For some retailers Shape has observed that over 98.5% of their traffic to gift
card endpoints is automated.
Gift card cracking is popular because it's relatively easy to monetize and
often done anonymously. Criminals impersonate real users and steal valid gift
card numbers by exploiting the retailers' own applications for purchases,
transfers and checking gift card balances.
Fake Account Creation
Fake account creation is often used for future fraud including promotions,
points, fake reviews and surveys. In one client example, 16k fake accounts were
attempted to be created in just a week. Stopping attacks requires the fast
identification of automated attackers and manual fraudsters without adding any
friction for actual customers.
Scalping
Scalping bots obtain limited availability items, often resulting in items
being sold out in minutes. A common scenario is bots buying up high demand
concert tickets, congesting the main user flow for everyone else, resulting in a
bad user experience and brand reputation damage for a retailer's most loyal
customers.

Markham, ON: Pacific Mall to clamp down on sale of counterfeit goods
Counterfeit
sales are 'sprawling and pervasive' at Toronto-area mall
Pacific Mall management says it will conduct an internal investigation and is
sending warnings to store owners after a U.S. government report listed the
Markham-based mall as one of the most notorious sources of pirated and
counterfeit goods in the world.
The report said sales of counterfeit goods at Pacific Mall are "sprawling and
pervasive" and that vendors "operate largely with impunity (as) requests for
assistance from local law enforcement have reportedly gone unanswered."
Along with the internal investigation, the mall said it will be "implementing
stringent internal measures to stop imitation goods from being traded or sold in
the mall."
These measures include written advisories that warn all store owners suspected
of trading or selling imitation goods of possible legal consequences for
engaging in such practices. The mall management said it will also partner
with manufacturers and commission private investigators to identify and
audit imitation goods.

Could Sears Canada have been saved?
One expert says they should have "cut a deal with Amazon"
"I would have franchised it," says Mark Healy, Canadian Tire franchise owner for
20 years. "A lot of the stores they were hemorrhaging and bleeding with they
could have leased them out or you redevelop."
"The most important thing is they didn't have an ecommerce platform. They
didn't have anybody that could handle that. Guess what. Amazon's going out and
building brick and mortar stores. Cut a deal with Amazon and get them to
handle your back end. Let them take the ecommerce. Let them do the deliveries.
Let them do everything. I think there could have been an opportunity there
with Amazon. It's too late now obviously but I honestly believe that Sears
didn't really want to survive."

Canadian online retailers grow sales 30%
Double the rate of U.S. online retailers
Canadian retailers saw their online sales grow at nearly double the rate of
U.S. online retailers in 2017, according to an Internet Retailer analysis of
data recently released by Statistics Canada and the U.S. Commerce Department.
That growth has Canadian e-retailers nibbling at the sales of U.S. online
retailers.
The rise of domestic Canadian e-retailers is a significant development, and it
is only gaining momentum as more merchants develop their digital capabilities
and broaden their selections, giving Canadian shoppers greater opportunity to
shop with Canadian companies online.

Popular goods sold through Amazon, Walmart
and others are counterfeits: Government report
Federal investigators purchased counterfeit popular products, including
cosmetics and electronics, on some of the biggest and best-known e-commerce
websites, according to a new report. The findings highlight new challenges
for U.S. agencies and businesses in protecting consumers from potentially
dangerous goods.
The investigators purchased a total of 47 products from third-party sellers
hosted on five major e-commerce websites: Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Sears
Marketplace and Newegg. Of those, 20 were determined to be counterfeit by
the companies holding the products' intellectual property rights, the
Government Accountability Office, Congress' nonpartisan investigative
division, said in a report, titled "Agencies
Can Improve Efforts to Address Risks Posed by Changing Counterfeits Markets."
GAO did not not specify which counterfeit items came from which online
marketplace. But the report states the agency "purchased at least one
counterfeit item and one authentic item from each of the five e-commerce
websites," as determined by blind testing by the companies holding the
rights for each brand-name item.

When Anti-Fraud Blacklists Cost Merchants
Customers
Card-not-present fraud is a huge and growing problem for ecommerce, and one
way merchants try to prevent it is with blacklists. These databases contain
names, email addresses, phone numbers, and credit card accounts linked to
confirmed fraud.
It used to be that such blacklists, updated internally or bought from a data
provider and updated every few months, were a reasonably good layer of fraud
protection. Now, as fraudsters develop ever-more sophisticated strategies
and have access to a growing cache of stolen consumer information from data
breaches, the quality and structure of blacklists matter more than ever. A
dynamic blacklist can be a valuable tool for fraud prevention, but static
blacklists can lead to more fraud and more false declines for merchants.
False declines are already a big problem for ecommerce. Ecommerce merchants
decline 45% of their orders, and 22% of those declines are false, according
to the Lexis Nexis
True Cost of Fraud Survey for 2017. False declines cost the US ecommerce
industry more than $8 billion in lost sales in 2016 alone. Customers
declined in error are likely to take their business elsewhere, rather than
go back to merchants who wouldn't take their money. But how can blacklists,
which are supposed to prevent bad actors from making purchases, sometimes
cause good customers to be rejected, too? The answer hinges on the
difference between static and dynamic data.

Update from Yesterday's Story
Prosecutor links suspects in nearly $1 Million Walmart thefts to crimes in 14
States
A
Dane County prosecutor says two Missouri residents arrested at a Monona Walmart

One of the suspects, 44-year old Jason Edge appeared in Dane County court
Tuesday, with his bail set at $10,000. Another suspect, 42-year old Shelly
Scott, will make a court appearance later this week. "Walmart reports they are
suspects in a check fraud scheme in fourteen other states," Assistant Dane
County District Attorney Dallas Montano says. "Over $650,000 has been stolen to
date," she says. I'm aware through some investigation of my own that she has
several warrants from other states," attorney Steve Mays says of his client,
Scott.

City, MO: Smash and grab' thieves steal over 70 cellphones from SETCELL
On Feb. 15, two men broke into their shop using a large rock and stole dozens of
cell phones. Surveillance footage from inside the store shows the men breaking
the display case glass and grabbing several phones. Herndon said the burglars
got away with more than 70 expensive iPhones and Androids, and he doesn't
believe this was a random smash and grab. The owners, who strategically chose
the Westport location because of the visibility and 24-hour security, believe
the two suspects scoped out their business, knew what case to target and figured
out a 15-minute gap as to when they could get away with the crime.

charges in 10 cases of theft, police said. She is being held in the Dallas

Victoria's Secret, Sephora and Ulta and "brazenly began stuffing merchandise in
her purse or bag," police said. "Each theft takes mere seconds, and Jamie has
not cared if employees or other shoppers are watching her," the department said
on Facebook. In one instance in February, Waldrop is accused of taking 120 pairs
of underwear, three bras and 16 pairs of pants, according to a criminal
complaint.
Waldrop was arrested in February 2016 on a charge of possession of a controlled

Corpus Christi, TX: Murder Trial begins
Painting contractor accused of killing co-worker inside Walmart
The murder trial began Monday for a contracted worker accused of punching a
co-worker off a ladder then stomping on his head at a local Walmart. Anthony
Richardson sat in Judge Missy Medary's District Court as opening arguments and
witness testimony began in the case.
Prosecutor Erica Matlock laid out what she expects the jury will hear in the
case during her opening arguments. "You're going to hear that originally it was
thought that Mr. Harley fell off the ladder he was working on," she told the
jury. "He was an overnight contractor painting the Walmart bathroom ... What
you're also going to hear, ladies and gentlemen, is that that didn't happen."
Officers got a call about an injured person at the store. When they arrived,
they discovered John Harley, 63, in the bathroom, lying in a pool of blood.

Personal Board of Advisors

your own sounding board when you're working through tough situations and allow
you to share your concerns or dreams. No single mentor is likely to be able to
help in all aspects of your life, so consider getting your own board of
advisors.

Having a strategy or a plan about everything you do is important if you expect
to win long term. Daily victories are nothing without a long-term plan. They
fade quickly and leave the audience expecting more, which only a plan and
strategy will satisfy. So after your next victory, ask yourself what am I going
to do next?
