Diversity in the Workplace: 5 Ways to Help Your Team Perform Better When we think of diversity, most of us first think of race, ethnicity, gender and age. Yet diversity in organizations is a much broader spectrum than that. It encompasses diversity in passions, talents, personality, motivations and experience, to name a few. (Embrace your uniqueness)

10 Things Bosses Never Tell Employees
There's a lot you don't know about your employees, especially the things your employees will never tell you. There's also a lot employees don't know about you. Here are 10 things you might wish you could say to your employees. (These might surprise you)
Great Leaders GROW In Ken Blanchard and Mark Miller's new book the emphasis is showing leaders, and aspiring leaders, how to ensure that they'll be able to effectively serve others throughout their careers. Here are four tips for leaders that the book covers. (Learn to G.R.O.W.)

There is No Career Ladder
Reaching the apex of the career ladder by gradually getting promoted to the top is a thing of the past. Career ladders are an artifact of the Man Men era, when you signed onto an organization at age 21, followed the rules, were incrementally promoted, and retired with a gold watch. Those days are long gone. (Stop climbing)

Managing your career upwards requires a vision of where you want to go and how you're going to get there. Other than personal performance, one of the primary factors is who you know and how you develop those relationships. Everything you read talks about managing relationships around you in your current role, but the real key is the relationships you have outside your role or your company and not just in the LP community but with successful operators outside your current scope. If you expect to truly excel in your career, you've got to expand your contacts and develop them as you would the operator beside you. Obviously, this can be difficult and slow to progress. But give it some thought for the new year and set some goals of meeting new executives and expanding your circle. Because one person, one contact, can make a difference and you never know who that might be.

Just a Thought,
Gus Downing
