MasterCard Joins the Push for Chip Cards in U.S. With customer data encrypted inside a chip it is harder to hack and a handful of U.S. banks and credit unions have begun issuing the cards here in the last two years but most retailers have held off upgrading due to the costs. Symantec releases their "Data Loss Prevention for Tablets" report Initially thought of as purely personal devices, tablet computers are increasingly being evaluated and deployed by organizations for business purposes. Employees, especially executives, are also bringing their tablets to work and accessing confidential data, with or without permission from IT Security. But are these devices secure enough for your enterprise. Now you can say "yes" to tablets, confident that your sensitive data remains protected. While outside the typical retail LP executive's responsibility it is always wise to expand your knowledge base and merely read how IT security executives are dealing with these issues. Especially when taking into consideration that after a large data loss you could be involved in the investigation. (Source idgenterprise.com)

$1.2 million of counterfeit goods was seized by federal agents (ICE & HSI) in Tampa HSI special agents seized 5,512 items, including purses, wallets, scarves and perfumes from a van and an office. The items belonged to Jin Zheng, 39, a naturalized U.S. citizen from China. Zheng was previously arrested and indicted for trafficking in these counterfeit goods. As the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, HSI plays a leading role in targeting criminal organizations responsible for producing, smuggling and distributing counterfeit products. Anonymous hackers are just going after Symantec and stealing source codes and posting bits of it over time on Pirate bay website. Even after all the arrests they are still coming after police departments, companies, and anyone they feel warrant attacking. Remember a few months ago when they hacked CLEAR - in our own LP world so to speak. (Source csoonline.com)

UK News ó

The British Retail Consortium released their Retail Crime Survey 2011 that showed crime "soaring" by 31% to $2.21 billion. The overall cost of retail crime has soared up 31% as the sector is "increasingly targeted by serious, organized criminals." Showing fewer incidents with "sharply" higher theft amounts. Expenditures on crime prevention by retailers rose 1.4% to $338 million, a median spend of $1.1 million. This has substantially reduced incidents of opportunistic crime against stores, but combating the rise in violent crime retailers and their staff are exposed to requires the support of law makers and enforcers. Most worryingly, increases in the use of weapons and physical violence have also been reported. Obviously ORC is rising here as well. Meaning that ORC is a global problem. (Source infosecurity.com)

CyberSource releases it's 8th annual online fraud study in the UK showing merchants lose 1.8% of revenues to online fraud. Surveying over 200 merchants this report contains in-depth analysis of the results; comparisons are also drawn with the previous fraud surveys. Included within this report is best practice advice for businesses trading online, together with industry comments from Visa Europe, the Police Central e-Crime Unit and thetrainline.com. If you have stores in the UK or are planning to open stores there and are operating online this is a must read. (Source cybersource.com)

D&D Daily Canadian Push

Walmart Canada goes on offensive ahead of Target arrival Wal-Mart Stores isnít about to let the grass grow under its feet in Canada. The discounter plans to spend about $753 million this fiscal year to expand its store presence in Canada, before rival Target Corp. begins its push in the country. With 73 projects - remodeling - store expansions - relocations and adding 4.6 million sq. ft. of retail space. Bringing its store count to 375. (Source retailingtoday.com)

Canada's retail landscape is "going to get tough". Landlords and banks are squeezing the small retailers and losing patience with the weak players. There was an increase in mid size retailers going out of business in 2011 - closing hundreds of stores and leading to a pinch in retail jobs right now and 2012 won't be any better. The push won't really be felt for another two years so getting there could be tough. The rush of foreign chains is creating a new challenge for Canada's retail sector. It faces the threat of more managerial jobs being consolidated in foreign hands, while lower paying store positions remain here. How the sector deals with this conundrum will provide lessons to other sectors, which also are grappling with a loss of control over operations in this country. The pressures are even being felt by more stable domestic retailers. To lure new tenants, landlords are forcing existing merchants to abandon their prized spots in the best malls in favor of a foreign competitor, Mr. Lichtsztral said. Top malls are demanding steep rent hikes to renew a lease, forcing incumbents to leave. The squeeze is going to upset feathers for a while. (Source globeadvisor.com)

Canada's drug store industry is set for a battle as well. Target's opening independently operated pharmacies under a franchise model in all of its stores and U.S. McKesson Corp is buying control of 850 stores across Canada that operate under the I.D.A. and Guardian brands. Its also buying the Katz Group drug store chains franchise business which services the 160 Medicine Shoppe outlets. (Source winnipegfreepress.com)

Madison, WI., woman jailed on numerous shoplifting counts form Target stores may be part of an ORC ring being investigated by police. Tamice Dunn, 40, was issued the new tentative charges on Sunday by Madison police, and also was charged with four counts of bail jumping from open criminal cases in three other counties, according to a news release from Madison police. The new shoplifting charges accuse Dunn of taking electronic items and liquor from the Lien Road Target store on Jan. 10, 13 and 25 and Feb. 1. She was already in jail after Fitchburg police arrested her on Feb. 3 for allegedly shoplifting at the Fitchburg Target store. The open criminal cases included two in Waukesha County and one each in Iowa and Grant Counties. "It is believed there are co-conspirators in some of the Madison retail theft cases," DeSpain said. The police department is looking to identify those suspects." (Source madison.com)

How to Nail the Interview -- When You're the Interviewer Here's a secret most candidates never consider: interviewing isn't necessarily easy from the other side, either. But with guidance, coaching, and a whole lot of practice, you can start your next cycle much more prepared. Here's what 100+ interviews can teach you about making the right hires. (You may want a partner)

Stop Being Deceived by Interviews When You're Hiring
We all know of instances in which a poised, charming job candidate turned out to be a disaster on the job. The challenge of picking the best person is especially hard in the current job market. Conducting so many interviews is time consuming. But the bigger problem is that traditional job interviews are simply not very good at selecting the best candidates. (Forget about looks)
How to Ace a Job Interview on the Phone With hundreds if not thousands of applicants often vying for a single job these days, recruiters and hiring managers are increasingly doing their initial job interviews on the telephone. They estimate that more than half of first screens take place on the phone. (Don't wear pajamas)

As decision makers for our companies, we all have a responsibility to our organizations and our teams to make the best possible informed decisions based on the facts, the cost, the ROI, and our due diligence. With the due diligence process being the only variable impacted by human opinion, therein lies the grey. Opinions can vary to the extremes with pitted rivalries being masked as confidential tidbits all the while being fueled by agendas on steroids, with even the most casual reference having intentions of deep meaning. All of us are relegated to our competitors' comments. Retailer or vendor, we all share that mutual circumstance. But at the end of the day, it's about rising above it and taking the high road, as difficult as that may be, and providing the most accurate information and knowledge that we can in order to help the industry.

Just a thought,
Gus Downing
