With the mobile consumer clearly in the drivers seat and Amazon 'Go' fueling
this new cashierless era, the rush to create the perfect seamless shopping
environment that eliminates friction at the checkout, if not the checkout
itself, is reaching a fevered pitch never seen before. With some even declaring
the front end to be wasted space destined to be better utilized.
This demand for seamless shopping, the technology that delivers it, and the
physical changes it creates in the stores is forcing retailers to completely
rethink and reinvent the controls, the Loss Prevention policies, and practices,
and possibly even have to redefine the acceptable shrink levels.
In this session with Gus Downing,
Dan Faketty, VP AP at Southeastern Grocers,
Chair NRF LP Council, and Mike Lamb, VP AP at Kroger will discuss the dramatic
changes this will have on virtually every Loss Prevention process, control, and
investigation. Changing the very core of LP store programs and requiring a
different skill set for LP associates.
Greg Brumley: The 'Un-Security' Guy
"My
only regret with my career is that I didn't find this job 20 years ago, although
I don't think I would have been right for the job if I hadn't had my experiences
along the way," says Greg Brumley, Vice President of Asset Protection and
Facilities for Lululemon, the athletic apparel company that's based in
Vancouver, Canada, with 400 retail stores across North America.
Brumley's past positions included loss prevention roles and executive protection
roles at Walmart U.S. and Walmart Indonesia, Starbucks, T-Mobile and Coinstar.
Each role was fulfilling, he notes, as he had opportunities to build loss
prevention programs from the ground up.
One of the reasons why he enjoys his current role with Lululemon is the C-suite
support. "I've got enormous support in the business and strong relationships
across all departments. My supervisor and boss is the COO. One of my strengths
in this place and one of the reasons I call myself the 'Un-Security Guy' is that
I'm an easy-going person, and I connect with people, including the people here
at Lululemon."
He also enjoys working in the retail sector, in general, noting, "The security
environments for retail mean that you need to keep your risks outside. And
that's difficult, because in the retail world we let our risks inside our front
doors every single day. We also get to experience so many different areas, from
health and safety, organized retail crime, inventory variance and managing
shrink in the retail stores."
Kroger responds to racial profiling incident in Mesquite, Texas
Kroger Co. has apologized after some of its employees racially profiled a group
of teenagers by wrongfully accusing them of shoplifting. The company has also
accelerated a sensitivity training program at its stores in the Dallas area.
Kroger officials said in a statement: "We did not live up to our values in this
situation."
Ukiah Swain said four boys - her sons and nephews, all of whom are black - were
in a Kroger store in Mesquite, Texas, on Jan. 3 and bought snacks. A Kroger
employee called the police on them, suspecting they were shoplifting, but police
found they had receipts for the items and had paid for them. They were given a
warning for trespassing anyway.
When Swain complained to the store manager, he backed up the employee's decision
to contact police. "He said, 'They looked like they could be shoplifters,' and
he laughed," Swain told a Dallas TV station. Zavarion Swain, who's 16, said the
store manager told him, "We've had problems with people like you before."
Officials at Cincinnati-based Kroger, the nation's largest operator of
traditional supermarkets, contacted Ukiah Swain and apologized once they learned
of the incident and removed the employees involved from that store until the
company investigates what happened. Kroger also said it will accelerate
already-planned sensitivity training at the Mesquite store and for the entire
Dallas store division. The company told the police it rescinded any complaint
from the incident.

Government shutdown halts FDA food inspections
Raising concerns about safety in the supply chain
The Food and Drug Administration, which oversees 80 percent of the U.S.'s food
supply, has ceased all routine inspections of domestic food-processing
facilities as hundreds of food inspectors are furloughed because of the
government shutdown.
The suspension of routine inspections will most directly impact the FDA's
preventative functions like evaluating the need for recalls. Its
outbreak-detection and drug-testing operations should continue unaffected.

UK: Police advise stores to hire extra security in case of Brexit panic-buying
British police have advised retailers to consider hiring additional security to
cope with fears of food shortages and other goods in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
London's Metropolitan Police said concerns about shortages of goods could lead
"to a significant increase in customers," in a statement emailed to CNN, and
suggests stores should consider planning for extra security.
The statement said that while "no advice has been issued in relation to
looting," the police are "having these conversations in order to minimize the
demands on policing from any resulting large crowds or queues at shops as part
of our regular civil contingency engagement with businesses and partners."

Police Crime Investigations Benefiting from Facial Recognition Technology
This is where facial recognition can offer up additional intelligence. These
systems can memorize the faces of persons of interest, networks of gang members,
wanted criminals and those suspected of involvement in serious violent crimes.
Furthermore, these systems don't need prior personal engagement to recognize an
individual and see only data, not gender, age or race.
The technology doesn't take the decision away from the human police officer.
However, it does bring greater transparency and context to the
decision-making process of whether a stop and search intervention is justified.
Similarly, the advanced technology can recognize and match an individual seen on
a CCTV camera at a crime scene to someone the police encounters on the streets
some time later, justifying a stop and search on that individual.
Its ability to check in real time if a person is on a criminal watchlist adds an
extra layer to the decision-making process prior to conducting a stop and
search, lowering the likelihood of discrimination. Facial recognition thus helps
eliminate both weapons and criminals off the streets and potentially prevent
crimes before they have a chance to take place.

Running Into the Nike House of Innovation Future of Retail
By Tony D'Onofrio, Global Retail Influencer
The future of retail includes digitally supported leadership branding coupled
with hyper-personalized immersive consumer experiences. Of all the stores that I
have visited to date around the world, the Nike House of Innovation in New York
City, is the closest example that meets this critical futurist success formula.
Covering over 68,000 square feet (6,373 square meters), this new Nike flagship
offers six floors of differentiated physical to digital experiences. Each floor
could be a store of its own. Combined, this location is designed to meet the
ever changing needs of a digitally empowered consumer.

Retailers Can Defeat Synthetic Identity Fraud
Synthetic
identity fraud is causing serious problems across the retail spectrum. From
department stores to convenience stores, the risks are high and the costs
skyrocketing as fraudsters use information to obtain credit cards, open store
accounts and go on shopping sprees that are seriously damaging to the bottom
line. It's particularly a problem for online and e-commerce retail.
How does it work? Fraudsters take an individual's personally identifiable
information and combines it with made-up information. For example, someone's
legitimate social security number is combined with false information like a fake
name and address. No one is going to report being a victim of fraud because it's
a fake persona. The result is a credit account, or a credit card is issued and
used to make purchases. No one is paying for the charges to those accounts and,
obviously, attempts to collect on those fraudulent purchases go nowhere.
The only way to curb the risk of synthetic fraud is to determine if the
customer is who they say they are at the point where the transaction is taking
place. Identity authentication is the critical step in determining the legitimacy
of the would-be customer.
Intellicheck's
Retail ID SaaS technology solutions are budget-friendly, powerful
fraud deterrents that prevent online, mobile or POS fraudulent retail purchases
while providing a more engaging customer experience with a comfortable, quick
process that enhances consumer confidence.
Retail ID Online, for example, integrates with the retailer's online purchasing
website and seamlessly checks purchasers' driver licenses for authenticity.
Simple, fast and easy to adopt and use, the technology solution guides a
customer to capture images of their driver license. The cutting-edge app
encrypts the driver license image to strict standards and matches the image
against authentic driver license formats. Retail ID Mobile works the same way,
using a smartphone to capture the driver license image. With real-time
authentication, the purchase can proceed with confidence by the retailer or, if
the driver license is flagged as counterfeit, the purchase process is
terminated.
No matter what type of fraud a would-be perpetrator attempts, Retail ID products
give you the protection you need. They've proven 99.9% effective in identity
authentication, preventing transactional fraud including fraudulent account
openings, account take overs, card not present fraud, gift card fraud, cash off
card, and fraudulent check transactions. These state-of-the-art technology
solutions are equally effective in preventing pick up in store (BOPIS) and
non-receipted return fraud. No matter your size, Retail ID technology solutions
will work for you.

Cutting Through the Jargon of AI & ML: 5 Key Issues
Ask the tough questions before you invest in artificial intelligence and
machine learning technology. The security of your enterprise depends on it.
When looking at the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)
components of information security products, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the
glut of marketing buzzwords. As a decision maker, how do you cut through the
jargon to fully understand what you're purchasing?
The key is in asking the right questions before purchasing a product. Here is a
short list of key issues to address:
Issue 1: Technical Components - Sometimes vendors make big AI/ML claims
but their products only use simple classification algorithms on a single type of
data. Buyers need to ask which algorithms and frameworks are being used and
whether these are existing algorithms or custom solutions developed by the
vendor.
When vendors talk about how they implement AI/ML, buyers can get a better sense
of whether they're buying a point solution or a more comprehensive one. Note
there is no right or wrong answer here unless a vendor point blank refuses to
disclose what goes into its AI/ML. What you're really looking for is
transparency and a conversation on how its product will use AI/ML to protect
your assets.

Study Says Manufacturers Struggle with IoT and Finding Skilled Cybersecurity
Staff
Though the manufacturing sector does not attract the sheer volume of total
cyberattacks as other areas of the economy, research has shown that coordinated
cyber espionage targets manufacturing more than any other sector.
"Three-quarters of U.S. manufacturing firms have fewer than 20 employees and 98
percent have fewer than 500. To shore up the resiliency of the U.S. supply
chain, reaching small manufacturers is essential, and understanding their needs
and capabilities is a crucial initial step," says Kevin McDunn, Chief Product
Officer of DMDII.

How the IoT is transforming the CCTV industry
Organizations of all types and sizes are starting to introduce IoT technology
alongside Cloud services to enhance the efficiency of their existing CCTV
hardware. There was a notable spike in activity in the months leading up to
the enactment of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) given the extra
securities that organizations had to achieve. For example, IoT-enabled CCTV
equipment allows for visual data to be captured and stored securely off-site for
as long as required and viewed remotely by authorized personnel using their
smartphone, tablet or PC. Rather than waiting potentially weeks for law
enforcement to pick up flash-drives of incriminating footage, the evidence can
be emailed directly to them and used straight away.
A further advantage lies in the fact that criminals often damage or destroy CCTV
equipment at some point during the committing of a crime. IP CCTV ensures that
evidence recorded prior to the destruction of the hardware is both secure and
out of reach of the perpetrators. professionalsecurity.co.uk

TAG-certified digital channels see less than 1%
ad fraud
Online ad fraud is dramatically reduced to less than 1% when advertisers use
media channels certified by the industry's Trustworthy Accountability Group
initiative, new research claims.
TAG's study, carried out by The 614 Group, found the use of TAG-certified
distribution channels for digital advertising reduced the level of fraud by more
than 94% from the broader industry average (fraud rates reduced from 8.99% to
0.53%).
Four billion ad impressions by three major ad agency holdings groups - Omnicom,
WPP and Publicis Groupe - were analysed across some of Europe's biggest markets:
the UK, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. It is the first analysis of
the effectiveness of ongoing industry anti-fraud efforts in Europe, TAG said.
The study compared invalid traffic rates in TAG-certified channels against
industry norms by measuring ad impressions from January to August 2018. Invalid
traffic rates includes "general", such as bots, spiders and other crawlers, and
"sophisticated", such as hijacked devices, adware and malware.

Why Website.com's Abandoned Cart Recovery Feature
Can Significantly Increase Profits For Online Store Owners
Website.com, one of the largest code-free,
drag and drop
ecommerce builders, is proud to introduce a new abandoned cart recovery
feature to help online store owners win back their customers. The abandoned cart
recovery feature retains potential customers who leave their website without
finishing their purchase.
The abandoned cart recovery feature allows store owners to keep track of
potential customers who had placed items in their shopping cart but failed to
check out. These consumers often abandon carts without meaning to, and may have
simply left the page by accident. Customers may also have had a change of heart,
or had become distracted before completing the purchase. Merchants can use the
abandoned cart recovery email tool to easily send out a reminder or incentive to
shoppers to return to their online store and complete the order.

The importance of staying focused and positive in your job search can't be over
emphasized. Even when you're networking keep it positive and never network
without asking for another contact name at the companies you're looking at.
Operators, Human Resource executives, other Loss Prevention executives, anyone
that is in a management position with the companies you're interested in
joining. We'd also suggest visiting some stores and trying to meet the Loss
Prevention team and finding out more about their LP efforts, structure,
management individuals, and just plain getting to know that companies LP culture
and never leave without leaving a copy of your resume. Every successful
marketing campaign has a grass roots methodology and getting into some stores is
just that. If done correctly I assure you the multi unit LP executives will find
out who you are and respect you for doing it.
Just a Thought, Gus
