eBay Offers Special Thanks to Retail Partners on ORC Investigation

eBay Asset Protection Investigations and Senior Leadership team would like to extend their sincere appreciation and special thanks to our law enforcement investigative partners and the retail loss prevention teams at Home Depot and Walmart, especially to Rich Schultz, Corporate Manager Investigations, and Randy Tharaldson, Central Investigations West Coast, at The Home Depot for their support on the recently announced arrests in Scottsdale, AZ based ORC case entitled "Orange Crush." Without the dedicated and ongoing support and demonstrated professionalism exhibited during the course of the investigation by both Rich & Randy which resulted in the 36 arrests, it clearly would not have been possible and as productive. Much Appreciated!

H&M just completed their Loss Prevention program's reorganization that, for the first time in the specialty store industry in North America, has the District Loss Prevention Managers reporting direct line to the District Manager of Operations and dotted line to the Continental Security Manager for North America.  Based on the concept of the District Operator owning the total business operation including the shrink goal, this concept is designed to increase communication between the DM and the DLPM and to strengthen the District team in all of its operating districts.  With 13 DLPM's covering on average of 15 to 20 stores each, they've been very successful in staffing a number of these DLPM positions with executives coming out of the store operating group.  Patrick Jandard, their Continental Security Manager based in Toronto, Canada, has been steering this effort for quite sometime and has had strong results.

ORC ring and fence busted in Trenton, New Jersey yesterday.  Mercer County Prosecutor's office along with the Rite Aid loss prevention team conducted a two-month investigation into the owner of MR Supermarket who was the leader of an ORC ring that stole cigarettes, batteries, and other items from Rite Aid outlets and then resold them at the store the leader, Joe Bocchini, owned.  (Source trentonian.com)

U.S. Senator Schumer (D-N.Y.) calls for popular websites to default to HTTPS instead of HTTP protocol for more security and to help prevent identity theft in WiFi hotspots like coffee shops and libraries.  "What many people do not know is ... hackers can use wireless hotspots as a gateway to your most private information," Schumer told reporters at the event held at a Manhattan coffee shop.  "The quickest and easiest way to shut down this one-stop shop for identity theft is for major websites to switch to secure HTTPS web addresses instead of the less secure HTTP protocol," Schumer said. "The bottom line is, if we let this proliferate, everyone is going to pay the price.  It could become the leading cause of identity theft."  (Source dailytech.com)

Cybercrime is a double-digit growth business year after year and is being supported by websites selling malicious software used to make big bucks stealing credit card numbers and other personal information.  In Britain alone, the annual cost, according to Britain's Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance, is $43.5 billion a year with most of that being shouldered by business.  With mobile malware increasing 46% in one year alone, according to McAfee, the increased threat is there and the exposure for retailers is right at the door as most are planning to rollout their mobile payment programs after Visa rolls it out later this year.  (Source techrepublic.com)

Two suspects apprehended for stealing items out of mailboxes leads to ORC arrests where the two were stealing personal information, creating credit cards and making small purchases at grocery stores and getting $100 back on each transaction.  Authorities found 66 receipts in their car the day of the arrest and on one day alone, Feb. 11, they bilked various victims of a total of $6,600.  During a search of the home, they found a potato chip bag with 12 fraudulent credit cards, a list of names, dates of birth and social security numbers of 14 people.  (Source thewetumpkaherald.com)

The proliferation of information-sharing to educate workers with the correct information comes with a significant risk as information is one of the primary competitive weapons and business enablers for organizations of all kinds.  And the actions of those workers or users who intentionally or accidently cause damage by stealing, sharing, leaking, being hacked, or simply losing their laptop is now one of the most complex and difficult to manage problems facing IT security teams.  The 2010 Verizon Risk Team Data Breach Investigation Report states that 48% of studied breaches are caused by insiders, an increase of 26% from 2009, and the insider threat is growing.  Virtually every organization, including ours, falls victim to this with revenge and money being the primary motivators according to the studies.  This is an interesting article and a must read!  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

According to a wide-ranging survey of illicit trading (counterfeit & pirated goods) by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the total global value of cross-border trade in counterfeit and pirated goods reached $250 billion in 2007, more than double since the beginning of the decade.  Globalization has brought with it a dark side of organized crime that stretches around the world and it's a problem that will continue to grow and is too important to ignore.  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

I received an email today from the Swatch Group INC offering me a part-time job as a finance officer, requiring no previous experience and stating we'll be guided through the task with the tasks being 1) receiving payment from our customers into your bank account,  2) keeping a commission fee of 10% from the payment amount, 3) sending the rest of the payment to our employees in Europe.  And asking me to click on an enrollment link after which I'll be contacted by their Human Resource employee with the name Cathy S Weber, IT Assistant Manager, Swatch Group INC.  This is happening every day across the world and how many people knowingly or unknowingly become money mules?

ORC theft ring of 7 busted in Wal-Mart stores in Northern Michigan stealing merchandise and returning it for gift cards.  Michigan State police have 20 suspects and are continuing the investigation.  (Source 9and10news.com)

The European Union's justice commissioner asked publicly listed companies to appoint more women to corporate boards and threatened them with imposed quotas if they don't.  (Source Associated Press)

Everybody has an agenda. We may not always be conscious of our agenda, or that of others, but everybody has an agenda. Your agenda is your reason for action or reaction. This is an important point regarding agendas. Your main objective in establishing your agenda is to determine your actions, to establish your plan. If you are constantly finding yourself reacting, then you need to rethink your agenda. Final thought: Everybody has an agenda, and you can rest assured your agenda is not going to be the same as the next person's. Indeed, the agenda of others is often times hidden, and/or at odds with yours and that of your team or organization. Always be aware of this, and remember, how well you develop and execute your agenda can determine your level of success or failure.................
