eBay-Initiated Investigation Leads to Major ORC Arrests of 36 Suspects

eBay Fraud & PROACT investigators identified significant suspicious activity involving a retail gift card seller and proactively reported detailed findings, account linkage and research to the Scottsdale, AZ police resulting in 36 arrests in major fraud scheme and ORC group that generated estimated profits of $1.2M. Scottsdale Police said detectives were contacted by eBay Investigators regarding suspicious activity of a user account linked to the Scottsdale suspect. The investigation continued as a collaborative and joint venture between eBay Asset Protection Investigators, Home Depot, WalMart, along with the Arizona Electronic Crimes Task Force, Maricopa County Attorney's Office, United States Secret Service, Phoenix Police and the United States Postal Inspection Service. After months of investigating, a large scale conspiracy was uncovered that appeared to be linked to Wayne Clifford Bahlman. Balham had a network of associates that would recruit persons to shoplift items from stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart and, using stolen identities, the suspects would return the stolen items at a different location for store credit. A Grand Jury indicted Bahlman and 35 others alleging more than 50 felony counts including participation in a criminal syndicate, organized retail theft, fraudulent schemes and artifices, trafficking in stolen property and forgery. Scottsdale Police along with federal agencies arrest 30 member ORC retail crime syndicate after eBay contacts them last April about one user account in Scottsdale.  Hitting Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart and others, the group would use stolen identities to return stolen merchandise and get store credit cards and auction them on eBay.  More details on this in the eBay news above. The man and woman team that are accused of shoplifting $5 million worth of merchandise from local Safeway store over the past several years both pleaded not guilty in court Friday.  Surveillance cameras showed 103 thefts between Nov. 19 and Jan 14 and included mostly common items like shampoos, razors, Rogaine, teeth whiteners, conditioners to batteries, DVD's and CD's.  (Source nwcn.com

The joint FBI/National White Collar Crime Center's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received more than 300,000 complaints during 2010 -- averaging just over 25,000 a month -- involving Internet crimes, mostly including the non-delivery of payment or merchandise, scams impersonating the FBI and identity theft.  The newly released 2010 Internet Crime Report shows that 75% of known perpetrators were male and more than 50% resided in California, Florida, New York, Texas, the District of Columbia or Washington State.  170,000 were referred to local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies.  (Source washingtontimes.com)

As smartphones take off so will the cybercriminals according to Kaspersky Lab, an information security firm.  Their just released Cybercrime Outlook 2020 report says cybercriminals have evolved to target all points of entry to get into corporate networks.  (Source yfittopostblog.com)

Toys 'R Us is looking to raise $800 million in an initial public offering (IPO) in April.  They reported a 5.4% increase in sales in December domestically but a 5% drop in international same store sales.  One source close to the company said they "took more market share away from the competitors last year than they have in the past 20 years."  (Source chicagotribune.com)

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for a systems analyst is $67,000 and the field is booming with not enough people to fill the demand and filling an LP analyst position is even harder with most if not all of them coming out of the IT department.  This area is going to be a challenge for quite some time with the secondary problem being keeping the IT executive in LP.  And with everything changing by the day even Finish Line's IT senior says  "I can't sit here and tell you my job is going to look the same a year from now," he said. "In fact, I can tell you it definitely won't. You don't know what's around the corner."  (Source indystar.com)

Since Alibaba.com's disclosure on Feb. 21, just 8 days ago, about their 100+ salespeople helping to defraud buyers and set up over 2,000 fraudulent storefronts, the China-based company has lost $1 billion in market value and their parent company Alibaba Group Holding, which shows Yahoo as its biggest shareholder, "may struggle to sign up new clients."  Alibaba is a business to business, or B2B, website that targets companies in the U.S. and Europe buying from low-cost manufacturers in China, Vietnam, and Pakistan, among others.  Those buyers are typically to small to travel thousands of miles to meet suppliers and manufacturers.  Their English website is "Gold Supplier" and sellers pay $4,500 annually to sell on it.  This will hurt them and probably help their competitors.  (Source bloomberg.com)

BJ's former employee arrested last week for Facebook postings threatening former co-workers at the BJ's Wholesale Club store he worked at in Conn.  His Facebok page showed two revolver-style hand guns with the names of six BJ's employees written on the firearm chambers.  (Source ctpost.com)

Making judgments on people is a serious thing and has a ripple effect that goes well beyond your immediate group.  We all make judgments on every executive we know and it's human nature to be critical.  Leave it to say that the best opinion is one of direct first-hand experience and is based on both sides of every story.  It's easy to react to the self-serving opinions of others, but the real professional takes the high road and focuses on what's best for their organization, their team, and their industry.

Just a Thought
