A former Disney employee who passed confidential earnings information to her boyfriend was sentenced to four months of home confinement after telling the judge she was "blinded by love."  Her boyfriend who tried to sell the quarterly earnings info to 33 investment companies was sentenced to 27 months in prison.  The courts are taking a firm stand on protecting confidential information and data.  (Source

A group of California Disney employees have filed suit against the company claiming their ID cards encoded with their social security numbers -- a violation of California law, according to the lawsuit exposes them to identity-theft.  The codes can be read by cell phones and one Disney employee discovered by accident that social security numbers could be revealed when he was playing with his smartphone.  Disney employees have been complaining about it for about two or three years and they hope to include all 21,000 employees at the Disney Resort in Orange County.  (Source

eBay Investigation Team Supports Major Theft Ring Investigation Leading to Arrests

eBay fraud investigators and members of the PROACT team collaborate on support of law enforcement and multi-retail investigation leads to search warrant execution and arrests in $2M theft ring. eBay PROACT team members worked closely with a number of retail loss prevention investigators and based on information received from that working relationship made additional linkage to multiple related accounts and users involved in the organized scam. Subsequently law enforcement requested applicable user histories culminating in the execution of six (6) search warrants, three (3) arrests and recovering of stolen property. Police in the Portland, OR area served the warrants as they cracked down on what they described as one of the largest theft rings in recent history. Portland police say 38-year-old Steven Terrill is the ringleader in a group that stole property from businesses and homes and along with several others created fake credit cards and stole items from cars, then sold the stolen property on the internet. The initial investigation shows Terrill and his group stole more than $2 million worth of property over the past two years and they searched five other addresses that housed stolen property before it was sold, police say.

With this year's Thought Challenge Award program, we're pleased to announce that Art Silva will sit on the Awards Committee and act as the Industry Liaison Director allowing the industry members to have a primary contact outside of the Daily's internal team and Art will assist with making any publication decisions that may arise.  We look forward to his support and guidance and please feel free to contact him for any questions or suggestions.

To the readers,

I have been so fortunate to meet a lot of very talented people in this industry who are quite passionate about what they do.  While I may not always have agreed with their opinions, they helped to make me think about things differently and challenge my own thoughts on whatever issue was at hand.

Last year, the D&D Daily added a "Thought Challenge" section in which a variety of people from our industry, including me, were offered an avenue to share their ideas and discuss things they were passionate about in order to generate thought and debate among readers.  This year, the D&D Daily has stepped up that effort and created a Thought Challenge Award.

A committee has been formed to award the top three published "Thought Challenges" of the year with the top prize of $5,000 or an all expense paid trip to the NRF or RILA conference in 2012 and a class at Northern Michigan University!  "Thought Challenges" will be judged solely on their content and not on writing ability, so please don't hold back because you feel you are not a "writer."  The committee is looking for interesting and innovative submissions and will award the prizes to the articles which are most thought-provoking.

This is your opportunity to advance our industry, offer help to those just starting out, and have a chance to win a nice prize at the end.  So... what's on your mind?

Good Luck
Art Silva, VP of Operations, North America, ESPRIT International

Your success is directly tied to the relationships you have with your stores, with your colleagues, and with your vendors.  The ability to develop, nurture, and grow those relationships is critical if you expect to deliver the results you need.  And as in the case of all relationships, it's also about what you bring to the table and the value you add.  Oftentimes, one's biggest challenge is usually driven by your weakest or worst relationship and over time those are the ones that'll have the biggest impact.  So take the time to access them and remember it's never too late to try to change one.
